To hate the new Cauldron sausages

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:01

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

Thanks @29052022J might be worth my trying then? The memory of the 2000s is so far away! This might be nice as a change

Cauldron sausages used to be lovely. As did the Cauldron pâtés and the Cauldron mushroom burgers. I really dislike all of the "plant based" fake meat stuff, I've been veggie since the early 1980s so I've had more than my share of salads, omelettes and chips as unimaginative main meals. Things seem to be getting worse again, not better, for vegetarian food. I didn't realise Sosmix was still available, my mum used to use that. Morrison's do still sell bean burgers and Lidl/Aldi do some beetroot or sweet potato burgers which are ok, but most of the supermarket burger/sausage offerings are now horrid fake meat rubbish. LMcC used to be much nicer as well. I think I'll have to start making my own Glamorgan sausages.

Yes it’s shame everything is geared towards being as realistic to meat as possible. I try not to buy much processed food and only really buy vegetable fingers as a junk food treat now and then. The good thing about the popularity of of vegetarian and veganism now is that you no longer have to settle for a mushroom risotto in a restaurant. If I see a mushroom risotto on the menu now it takes me back, I think that was all that was available at one point!

It annoys me when companies (looking at you Quorn) change the recipe of their products to vegan from vegetarian. As a vegetarian it does my head in. I hate the texture of most vegan meat substitutes (pea protein is quite nice) so when I see that quorn pepperoni is now vegan I get rage!

RDAnna · 30/01/2023 07:15

Try the Richmond ones.

harrassedmumto3 · 30/01/2023 07:18

I don't eat sausages generally, but I hope they listen to your views and put it right! There's nothing worse than the wheel being reinvented in a worse way than before.

Vinorosso74 · 30/01/2023 07:26

Thank you for the warning. I'm disappointed to see this! I don't often eat sausages but Cauldron Cumberland were my go to ones. In fact, I had 2 in toad in the hole at the weekend. There's still 2 left in the freezer. Why mess with something good?
I have recently discovered M&S Plant Kitchen chorizo style sausages which I quite like due to the smoky taste. I realise they are vegan.
I hate the laziness of lumping vegetarians and vegans together (sometimes along with gluten free or nut free). I do also get annoyed when people try to get me to eat fake meat as if you can't eat a meal without meat or fish.

You all need to try the Richmond ones. I’ve been vegetarian for 20 years and these are by far the best.

I pretty much only buy these now after years of trying others.
However, the chilled ones are much nicer than the frozen ones (the Ines you can cook from frozen and are in the frozen aisles that is) - not sure why, but they do taste different. The frozen ones are far more peppery.

Agree with a pp.

By changing vegetarian food to vegan, rather than creating new products, they are pushing out people who have been vegetarian for years. The newer products just don't taste the same and it's actually harder to find products I like.

It started with restaurants and it moving into supermarket foods now.

CherryogDog · 29/01/2023 16:31

Used to get Cauldron, but now buy the Richmond meat free, the frozen ones loose in a bag are much nicer than the packaged chilled sausages for some reason.

Other way round for me. Frozen ones are too peppery for me.

AyeCarrumba · 30/01/2023 07:53

Oh good lord. They are absolutely MINGING!
Have a look on their Instagram. Loads of complaints.
They have made them vegan. Completely different sausages in the same packaging.
I'm so annoyed. They were the only really nice veggie sausages. I've bought them for years. Really BAD business sense!

AyeCarrumba · 30/01/2023 07:54

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:03

It's also really annoyed me that they are trying to pass them off as the same product when they are entirely different. I bought 3 packets with my online shopping and I'm going to have to bin them. Two packets are in the freezer, but apparently they can't be frozen anymore, probably because of the weird texture. They also have substantially less protein than the old version.

Someone should do them for false advertising!

BaileysBreakfast · 29/01/2023 16:04

Oh nooooooo! YANBU I agree they were the best. I’m a lifelong vegetarian but not vegan and this vegan thing has ruined so many of my meals! At work now they keep using vegan plastic meat stuff where I used to have lovely proper veggie lasagne etc

Exactly! Why can't the vegan's just go away and eat their own horrible sausages, instead of messing with mine?!

napody · 30/01/2023 08:00

Oh no!

Agree they used to be the nicest.

I've discovered that if you soak linda McCartney ones in olive oil and don't cook for too long they're really nice- used to find them really dry!

AyeCarrumba · 30/01/2023 08:04

Honestly they should have just increased the price if eggs are too expensive. They will loose most of their customers now. Terrible decision.

Moidershewrote · 30/01/2023 08:07

Same thing has happened to all gluten free foods, which are now almost all made to be gluten free AND vegan - it’s really shit. I’m not even vegetarian (anymore) and yet my gluten free bread, cakes, pasta, pizza etc now doesn’t even have any dairy included.

i DONT want to eat vegan ‘cheese’, fuck off calling it cheese when it’s an abomination of over processed rancid oils and yeasts.

Ineedaholidaynowplease · 30/01/2023 08:07

Totally agree OP. They are disgusting. We have bought cauldron sausages for years, even meat eater DH enjoyed them. Bought 2 packs last week not realising they had changed - completely inedible and went in the bin. Gutted as they were by far my fave veggie sausage.

On the other hand, this is great for my daughter, who is allergic to dairy. Things are far easier for her and she has so much more choice now.

Every time a veggie food becomes vegan it's ruined. Quorn ham is the worst now. Slimy grimness.

All the Quorn vegan alternatives are ghastly (ham, chicken, pieces). My local supermarket only stocks the vegan ones, so I have to travel further if I fancy the regular brand.

I think Quorn and Cauldron are now owned by the same company?

All this nonsense is actually pushing me away from processed food - so they are probably doing me a favour!

DemBonesDemBones · 30/01/2023 08:24

@sleekitbeastie it's so annoying isn't it! But you're right maybe it will be good for us in the long run Grin

Janieread · 30/01/2023 08:26

I love vegetarian food and cannot bear these new slimy fake meat vegan monstrosities, so you are DNBU.

See I don't eat much processed food, but a cauldron sausage sandwich was an occasional treat, and now they've ruined them 😭

I know lots of people have suggested Richmond, but they really don't compare imo.

I have emailed Cauldron but I'm assuming I'll get the same standard reply as everyone else that has complained.

Just told DP about this and he's really pissed off. He's been complaining for a couple of years now about everything being 'veganised'. It's never, ever for the better. The Cauldron ones had become his favourites after the Quorn ones had all the flavour removed. The Linda McCartney ones are awful now. I do cook a fair bit without using meat alternatives (pasta/rice dishes, bean or lentil based stuff) but sometimes they're really handy if I'm cooking something that has meat on the side for everyone else. And DP uses veggie sausages in a fry up. I'll have to see what else is out there.

AyeCarrumba · 30/01/2023 12:02

Please let Cauldron know how you all feel. They might bring them back 🤷🏼‍♀️

Definitelynotem · 30/01/2023 12:15

They are awful, but the vegan bashing on this thread is a bit unnecessary. Meat eaters could turn around and say why add anything veggie to menus as they are also a minority by some of this logic. I don't think vegans seem to like this product either, so direct your discontent to the company.

blubberball · 30/01/2023 12:27

I like the Richmond sausages the best
