This whole 'Isla Bryson' cluster-fuck has me angrier than I can describe.

These girls had to accept and trust this vile individual in their beauty course on the basis of Isla's claim to be a woman, nothing more. They even tolerated abuse from Isla.

They were not told this individual was facing charges of rape. The college claim they didn't know either. Because 'Isla' said he was a women, these young women felt they had no choice but to strip to virtually naked in front of him. Failing to do so would be 'bigoted'.

But he also happens to be a serial rapist. Young women, some possibly aged 16 or so, stripping to virtually naked while a serial rapist watches. If this was my daughter I would be going mad.

Where is the safeguarding?

AIBU to feel viscerally angry with all our politicians about this?

It is beyond vile. And although they talk about a rainbow of different genders and identities, there's clearly one one (biological) sex this is in the service of. And to use confused and pressurised young girls (and, to a lesser extent, young boys) to bolster their case, well, it stinks.

Your "rainbow of different genders" made me think of the poster (can't remember if iy was on this thread or another) who had seen a poster in their child's school with the protected characteristics, and which included "gender" but not "sex".

One of the (totally spurious) "reasons given was that "gender" was "less confusing" for children.

How?

1. There are two sexes. Male and female.
2. You can see at a glance (99.99% of the time) which sex someone is.
3. One sex (male) is, on average bigger than the other (female), and is certainly, even for people of the same size, very much stronger. It is known that this, male, sex is more likely to be violent - we can be more cautious around this sex if necessary
4. The sex you were born is the sex you remain all of your life - you do not change sex. Ever.
5. There are certain illness that only affect one sex or the other . . . BUT
6. There are umpteen "genders" - 150 and counting the last time I glanced at Twitter
7. There is no way to look at someone and tell what "gender" they are
8. Because anyone or either sex can potentially be any "gender" we can't reliably say that one "gender" is bigger/stronger/ more violent etc than another, nor can we know who we may need to fear
9. People can switch "genders' whenever they like - back and forth like a fiddler's elbow if they wish.
10. Sex-linked medical conditions can be missed if people insist they are a different sex, because of their "gender"

How is this "less confusing"?

It's not. I saw that thread, the other lame argument was that kids would snigger about 'sex'. So what?

Thinking of kids sniggering at the words sex, these were primary aged kids, they probably don't know sex is also used to mean sexual intercourse.

One of the arguments for teaching the correct terms penis / vagina in schools is that it's adults who have issues with those words children see them as now different to elbow or arm they are just body parts.

Not only that, many of them are very understandably and justifiably offended by it. DSDs are a variation of development along one reproductive sex pathway or another and that's it. They are still demonstrably male or female - you can't recognise the variation without also recognising which pathway it's on. For example, people with Swyer's syndrome are female but don't have fully formed ovaries. We only recognise that variation because it wouldn't be a medical issue in a man. It is beyond offensive to claim that such people aren't women.

They definitely see being a woman as some sort of fantasy without actually trying to comprehend the nuances that actually make us women. They don’t understand what it is like to grow up and live as a girl/ women. The way we train ourselves to keep ourselves safe, walk with keys in our hands. Awareness of our boobs and to trying to keep private parts out of sight for our dignity when changing and failing. They don’t understand our inherent fears. If they REALLY wanted to live and feel like a woman they would learn all about this and respect this reality of being a woman and play their part in helping other women. We all know how other girls want privacy and we know to respect each others boundaries. These men are incapable of this because they just don’t know what it is to be a woman.

One of my colleagues when I was a S&LT worked with transexuals to feminise their speech. They would have surgery to tighten their vocal folds (which gives a higher pitch) and thought that this was all that was needed - but it isn't.

Male speech patterns and delivery are light years away from female ones. On average, we use different language, different word emphasis, different pace, different "fillers" in conversation (that's stuff like "um" and "er") and use them more often and more hesitancies - we give other people space to speak and don't hog the conversation; we are less aggressive both in language used and delivery. Female speech patterns are as distinctive as a female gait - some caused by anatomy and some by socialisation.

Even when men are on our side, they tend to speak over us - they don't even know they're doing it. It's innate. I often watch/listen to "The Mess We're In' with Graham Lineman, Arty Morty and Helen Staniland. Both of those men are allies against the TRAs - but even so, they often speak over Helen, cut her off etc. Sometimes they realise and apologise, but often they don't.

Yes, I know a few actors including ones with radio/audio book experience and they have spoken of the real differences in speaking as male and female characters.

One of them once gave me a demonstration of how pitch alone doesn't do it. He spoke into a voice morpher and his voice came out higher...from the mere tone of it you might think it female, but it was so obvious from the delivery, inflection and so on that it wasn't a woman speaking. If I hadn't known, I don't know if I'd immediately have guessed it was a man on a morpher, especially if I'd not been led to think of it. But it definitely sounded off and quite jarring.

So the people trying to be women are also trying to be more female? Why - is there something female about a woman?

On the word sex, my daughter was told it's a rude word in Year 3, aged 7. They were told to say gender and she and her friends got giggly at any mention of sex.

I gave a simple explanation of the differences and some time later, she told me I was wrong - teacher said so.

They are trying to be their idea of what female is, or what they want it to be.

It has nothing at all to do with what it makes to be female/a woman!

so Nicola Sturgeon claims she doesn’t have enough information to decide if Adam Grahams claims to be a woman are true or not. Even though she is in a position of power and access to records.

If one may be faking it then it's an admission that has to be assumed that any potentially is for nefarious purposes. And there is no way to tell who they are, and they are as trans as anyone else is.

that's why we can quite often spot the sex of commenters on here. It's really often very clear by the pattern, rhythm, response and tone, even without hearing a voice.
