Beauty students asked to strip in front of trans rapist at college AFTER sex attacks

scratchedbymycat · 27/01/2023 12:42

My AIBU title taken from this news article:

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/beauty-students-asked-strip-front-29063499

This whole 'Isla Bryson' cluster-fuck has me angrier than I can describe.

These girls had to accept and trust this vile individual in their beauty course on the basis of Isla's claim to be a woman, nothing more. They even tolerated abuse from Isla.

They were not told this individual was facing charges of rape. The college claim they didn't know either. Because 'Isla' said he was a women, these young women felt they had no choice but to strip to virtually naked in front of him. Failing to do so would be 'bigoted'.

But he also happens to be a serial rapist. Young women, some possibly aged 16 or so, stripping to virtually naked while a serial rapist watches. If this was my daughter I would be going mad.

Where is the safeguarding?

AIBU to feel viscerally angry with all our politicians about this?

It stands out to me that he was known as ‘Annie’ not Isla on the course. This is fast becoming one of the few ways that people can truly hide their past and start again without any questioning of their past for fear of appearing phobic.

I can only presume that there is a hesitancy to enquire formally but discreetly about any other names people are/have been known by.

Someone will find a link to a thread or two (cos they is all little stars) but this has been talked about for quite some time now.
It's not difficult for trans people to hide their identity from say the DBS. Its actually incumbent on the person applying to state previous names and "genders"
If they dont, well nothing is done.

Come on over to fwr sex and gender, see what you've been missing.

This has sod all to do with Bryson's trans status - would it have been any different if the situation was a cis man accused of rape enrolled on a beauty course? I've had a couple of male hairdressers and they must have done a hair and beauty course at college; it's not a female-only environment.

This has everything to do with a lack of information sharing between agencies; I'm surprised if the police aren't meant to share information about such charges where the individual in question is coming into contact with under 18s; certainly they would have had to if Bryson was a member of staff so it seems a bit of a loophole when the person in question is a mature student.

If he'd been a "cis man" as you term it, the women on the course would not have been expected to undress in front of him.

Oh.... and shall we take bets on how long it takes for the 'not another "anti-trans" thread' comment to appear.

Because after all, anything pro-woman must be 'anti-trans' but those posting those kind of posts don't like to see the extrapolation of that particular logic.

Exactly. I've been called a bigot so many times on here for saying that this sort of thing would happen. And, no, it's not because I think all trans women are predators - it's because I know that some men (however they identify) are.

chocolateismyjam · 27/01/2023 14:49

unclebuck · 27/01/2023 13:42

The poor woman is so gaslit she still calls that predatory man "she"!!!!!

Yes, appalling.

Some good examples in the article of the mangled language this ideology requires:

"Beauty students were asked to strip off their clothes in front of a rapist in the wake of their sex attacks" WHOSE sex attacks?! Reads like it was the beauty students'.

"Victims in the case told jurors at the High Court in Glasgow how they asked “muscular” Graham to stop before they forced himself upon them" - just what?!

Girls in some schools are getting the same message as these young women. That they have no right to privacy when changing for swimming in front of Michael who now says he's Michelle and insists on using girls single sex spaces. Some schools hold the line and make Michelle change separately - and some believe that he's magically changed sex and can undress with the girls. 😟

In fact, I am still waiting for a poster on another AIBU thread who declared that ALL communal changing rooms should be got rid of because they were uncomfortable in them. Even those with private cubicles as well. And that all facilities, even schools, could find the funds to put in all cubicles. EVERY facility should. Even space and cash strapped schools. The example they put to us was a local school who had access to another venue's changing rooms for 'space'.

They did not come back and clarify how schools were to do this when some schools are already bursting at the seams.

They did not ever acknowledge that even now girls are forced to undress in front of male students who have trans identities and those girls are reporting to their parents that they are being stared at and made to feel uncomfortable.

No. Their solution was not to address the limitations and find an equitable solution, but to continue to allow a males student to access girls out of some warped and bizarre principle.

This is just an adult version of what is happening at our children's schools.

And there are posters who is ignore the issue and shame posters for their 'hatred' while demanding solutions that are simply not viable.

PicklesAndTequila · 27/01/2023 14:49

lifeturnsonadime · 27/01/2023 13:44

Even if this vile individual wasn't a rapist these young women should NEVER be asked to pretend that a man is a woman and make themselves uncomfortable.

Sick to the teeth of this shit.

This, exactly this.
Pressure to call men women or be labelled transphobic/bigot/TERF.
I couldn't give a shit if it's the nicest nan in the world, it's a man.

I'm lost here.

What is the point of DBS checks then??

We all rely on them for childcare, teaching, etc. I know someone who teaches sewing at a local college, and she had to have a DBS check as some of the adults may be vulnerable.

Let’s be honest Isla Bryson does not exist

HE is called Adam Graham

100% this!

Are you having a laugh? Ask your male colleagues whether they were required to perform spray tanning or bikini waxing on semi-naked female students. Except that I think you already know the answer.

ickky · 27/01/2023 14:55

If he is denied access to the women's prison, I wonder how long it will be before he stops wearing pink clothes "detransitions".

I suspect when he realises the jig is up, it won't be very long.

IcakethereforeIam · 27/01/2023 14:56

This conflation of sex and gender means that men are allowed into women's spaces; changing rooms on every high street, in every gym, every school, in rape crises groups, wards, domestic violence shelters, oh and prisons, in fact everywhere.

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 27/01/2023 15:00

It's shocking beyond belief.

GloomyDarkness · 27/01/2023 15:01

@smokeandfire I think a lot of people are asking that about DBS checks with that horse and cart exceptions - because predators will always comply with every rule like putting done their previous names.

I fucking hate be kind - DD2 then in primary school did disablists topic very worth while but on back of that was told she had to ignore anyone making her uncomfortable even if it was a man - as it would be unkind not to. Clearly we tried to put this all in context and made sure she knew if she felt unsafe to get out of the situation any way she could and to not ignore any internal alarms.

Talking to staff they couldn't see an issue or it was her misunderstanding - possible but many other classmates said same and a few parents raised concerns,

GloomyDarkness · 27/01/2023 15:03

I would like to say I was shocked - I'm not as I think this kind of situation was entirely predicable.

slowquickstep · 27/01/2023 15:06

Sick and tired of all this bullshit, if you went through male puberty you will always be male no matter what you cut off and no matter what medication you take. Live how you like, love who you like but don't expect people to lie about your gender. If you were born John and want to be called Janet, fine, i will call you Janet and refer to you as shim not him and not her. I really don't care but stop this crap now, my Granddaughters safety is far more important than your name or you hurt feelings.

She probably not even aware yet that she's allowed to not do that.

ChristinaXYZ · 27/01/2023 15:09

YANBU. It is awful - it is not just about the prisons but the whole justice system. I keep thinking about the poor women who are Bryson's victism having to listen to lawyers and even the judge say 'she' and 'her' about a crime they know can only be committed by a man.

Voyerism is a crime and women and girls should have to overtly conscent to biological men in their vacinity when they are undressing.

THe Telegraph is covering the story as well now (apologies if there are links to this already; this is a long thread)

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/01/27/classmates-stripped-front-transgender-rapist-didnt-know-awaiting/

A "former classmate of Bryson on the beauty course, told the Daily Record: "It really scares me to look back and realise she was watching me with no clothes on after being charged with this.

"It makes me feel physically sick and violated. We should have known about these charges. It’s not right that we didn’t know."

She said her experience of removing her clothes in front of Bryson had left her “sickened”. She said: “Being a beauty course, you need to take your clothes off for some of it. We were doing spray tanning at one point and I was a model. You need to stand practically naked.

"Looking back, with what we know now, it’s so scary to think she was watching me with no clothes on. Someone should have told a class full of young women what was going on. Anything could have happened.”

Ms Ferguson said Bryson had started the course, which was "full of young girls", when starting a transition to becoming female and refused to "do practical stuff at first because she said she didn't feel comfortable."

“We had all kinds of accusations thrown at us in the middle of the classroom. I was being verbally attacked. She went to the head of the department and said we were all discriminating against her and were homophobic," Ms Ferguson said.
"I was really offended and hurt by that and didn’t go to college for three weeks because I was scared of the way she was coming at me.

"I didn’t even look at her because if I did, it gave her ammunition to say things to me. The way she spoke to the lecturers was disgusting. She made two of them cry. I found her very forceful and intimidating. Her true self came out during that time.”"

Greblegable · 27/01/2023 15:10

a friend of mine had to get a dbs to be in college when he was 19. So did this college not do one for Bryson or did the charge not show up? It should have done. It really should be checked to see where the failure occurred. Because if Bryson put all prior names and it was missed that’s a massive DBS fuck up. And if someone actually let him get away with not putting prior names on a dbs check given how he obviously hasn’t always been “Annie” then that person needs to be fired.

I thought maybe it was an adult college but one of the women quoted is only 18 now so would have been 16 when on the course.

Want2beme · 27/01/2023 15:10

It's such a mess. Just wish common sense would reign. HE IS A MAN!

uhtredbebbanburg · 27/01/2023 15:10

Jesus Christ. Can they slap another charge on him like impersonation? Pretending to be someone you aren’t to access women must surely be a crime? Btw, it pissed me off this morning when the bbc kept calling him by the female pronoun. He is not one of us!

Bashitcrazy · 27/01/2023 15:11

YANBU - This is absolutely absurd and I am genuinely terrified at what its going to lead to.
Can totally see how dangerous and completely insane this all is!! Have signed the petition and shared it.

It has everything to do with his ‘trans status’. If he was ‘presenting as a man’ ( )sic), the girls on the course with him would have been able to decide whether to appear semi naked in front of him. Plus of course, the fact that tattoo face was strutting around behaving……like a male bully was only tolerated because of the holy ‘trans ness’.

as a by note, I don’t understand where the accusations of homophobia come in. These girls weren’t complaining about him because he was a male or female homosexual, they complaining about him because he was threatening and rude.
