How can she be left like this? Take her back to A&E?

Posting for traffic has honestly I'm terrified something is seriously wrong with my Mum and don't know what to do so please be nice.

Last week she started with some pain that she says feels like it's right at the very bottom of her ribs and radiating round the sides. She was in agony, basically screaming with pain so I took her to A&E on the advice of 111. All obs and ECG were normal but the blood tests were abnormal. They were going to do a CT scan but then decided as her obs were ok and they didn't think there was a bleed as no fall/injury, they were not going to do a CT scan there but would refer it to the GP to arrange BUT because of the blood test results and recent weightloss, they wanted it done urgently under the "2 week rule" and from his grave tone, I highly suspect he thinks it's cancer and serious. They couldn't/wouldn't give her anymore painkillers because of the painkillers she's on for severe arthritis but these are not touching the pain.

Fast forward to today, she has been in absolute agony since Thursday and seems worse today and can barely move. She's exhausted and crying/screaming in pain. My sister called 999 today but they said as not life threatening they won't send an ambulance but had to speak to GP within an hour. GP receptionist tried to say no appointments so we couldn't speak to GP but after I explained the issue (and she could hear my Mum crying out in pain) she finally agreed to pass a message to the GP so currently waiting to see if GP will call back today or not. Mum says if I take her back to A&E we'll be sat for hours again and nothing will be done but I can't just sit here and watch her in so much pain and do nothing.

What do I do?! Do I make her let me take her to A&E? Do we wait to see if the GP will call? Just feel so helpless

RebeccaCloud9 · 18/02/2023 05:59

Amazing news! Did they ever work out what was causing all the pain in the end?

MustBeMissingSomething · 18/02/2023 07:11

Wow, this is the best possible news. You've all been through such a traumatic time and you've been an absolute star throughout. All the best x

We're assuming the bowel blockage as it seems it was a rather impressive amount according to the Dr 😳

Thank you everyone. She was so happy to be home and in her own bed!

I am so happy your mother is at home and better. I didn't comment at the beginning of this thread as it all sounded too similar to what happened with my mother. Repeated visits to the doctor with lower abdominal pain, plus 2 visits to A&E, all with a diagnosis of constipation. On her last visit they actually did a scan and it turns out she was riddled with cancer and it was referred pain from bone cancer in her pelvis that was causing the abdominal pain. She died 6 weeks later. I am so so glad that wasn't the case for your mother.

I am so sorry for your loss 💐Genuinely, at the start I thought that's where we were headed. She needs some follow up to see if they can find the cause of why she was so aneamic to require a transfusion, so hopefully that will have similar results and nothing to worry about

So pleased for you both (and your sister) . I hope you all feel much better very soon- stress and worry takes it out of you, never mind Covid.

Ohifyouinsist · 18/02/2023 22:14

That's such good news, you must be so relieved. It must have felt very bleak for a while, so pleased for all of you that she's home .

Reminds me of my DH who had similar issues and ended up in a French A & E. They did investigations and the French doctor returned and said 'I think he is full of sheeet' Grin That did indeed turn out to be the case, but it was a worrying time waiting for the scans and colonoscopy results.

OldFan · 19/02/2023 02:41

Yay! Hope she feels even better soon.

How is your Mum doing, OP?

Bless you for asking, thank you. She's doing ok although she seems to be quite weak. I'm taking her for follow up blood tests this week to check how the aneamia is. I'm still a little concerned something else might be going on but hopefully her bloods will be ok and set my mind at ease

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/03/2023 10:08

It's not surprising she is weak really! I hope that all continues to go well.

moggiek · 04/03/2023 10:52

She’s been through a lot, so it will take a while to recover. I hope that the blood results show that the anaemia is subsiding and that she can begin to get her strength back. I’ll be thinking of you both.

Likethestarsabove547 · 25/04/2023 19:44

How's it going now @Fearsheisdying

Conductpolicy · 25/04/2023 20:21

Wow what a thread.
So glad she is at least cleared out.

However isn't this exactly why we bloody well need people work on the weekend at NHS?? It's beyond crazy.

I had low fetul movement on Sunday.
Couldn't get proper scan!! Un bloody believeable

She's still a bit weak (could be as her weight is down to 39kgs) but doing a lot better now, thank you for asking. She's just had some follow up blood results this week and her levels are stable enough that the GP wants her to stop the iron tablets. Still waiting for follow up from some ultrasounds but the dieticians are involved to keep an eye on her weight. Hopefully things will stay as they are or improve but overall much better than she was, enough for us to not be so concerned anymore x

Oh yes this was years ago but I was terrified and no proper way to monitor because baby's shouldn't stop moving in a Sunday.
