I am scared of being nuked

Just as Putin went a bit quiet and the UK, USA, France and a few ex-eastern block countries started ramping up the rehtrotic, sabre rattling of more weapons. We no find ourselves IE the UK and the others bullying the germans into sending a few tanks that will not make a big difference or any difference but is seen as a red line by Putin.

Don't forget that Ukraine is claimed to have more tanks and armoured personnel carriers that the start of the war as they claim to have captured hundreds of abandoned tanks. So why do they need more, they actually don't. Giving these German taksn you need to train them, the parts will be difficult, repairs will be difficult the ammunition will be difficult, so why take the risk?

Ukriane had a pro-eastern leader before the current one. When Ukraine had their elections, American senetors were canvassing for the current pro-western man. Imagine a vote on Scotland's independence and we had Russians canvasing there

In the east of the Ukraine,, they were as bad as the others before the invasion by Putin.

The possibility of the UK being tested out with a nuke off our cost on on an isolated part on the UK is real and present becuse of the stance we are taking and we and others are giving her what it needs to defend themselves but to push them into the Crimea is a step to far at the risk of nuclear war

AIBU to think that sending a few tanks will tip Putin over the edge as I'm worried a lot.

He's capable of anything. I'm so weary of it all now and sick of the endless shit at work (NHS) and the mess the country is in all I can think about us being nuked is I won't have to get up and go to work that day.

I honestly couldn’t give a shit. Sorry.

I get this. Life in the U.K. is shit. Rishi’s manic smile and pretence that everything is fine is shit. It’s all shit. I’m with you.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/01/2023 09:50

It’s correct to say that sending these tanks is no longer about defence. It would significantly increase the prospect of retaliation and thankfully, presumably because they’re a hell of a lot closer, Germany are hesitant to take the step. It’s depressing that this country being in such a state means people don’t seem that interested or concerned about the prospect of a mad man deciding to use the ultimate weapon at his disposal, though I can see why they feel that way.

If only.

We all knows who suffers in war. The weak. The poor. The hungry. The disabled. The old. And at every level; OG style women. Why do you think the current government is shitting on them so hard ? It's so we won't notice a war.

Anyway, having lived through the 70s and beyond, this is mere pantomime. And the best thing about the 70s and beyond was the music. Just put on "London Calling" and see what we survived.

Hbh17 · 22/01/2023 09:53

Your fear is worse than anything that might actually happen to you, so maybe you need some professional support.
As everyone else says, none of this is new and at least it would be a quick end.

It depends. If it’s fought on home soil then yes. If it involved overseas operation then it’s healthy men who suffer.

VictoriaBun · 22/01/2023 09:55

If the world went down the ' we will nuke you , you nuke us ' situation. I'd want it aimed at my town as a direct hit. A world of multiple nuke hits , is not a world anyone would want to survive ( note I said survive , not live ) in.

Nimbostratus100 · 22/01/2023 09:56

when a Russian leader has ordered the deployment of nuclear weapons in the past, others in the chain of authority have refused.

They would refuse again.

As would happen if Sunak lost his marbles and ordered a nuclear strike against Putin

What makes you think we'd have a nice cosy war where all the undesirables would bugger off and the rest of us would be left to carry on our lives? Basically if it went nuclear we would all fuck right off into little pieces of vapour.

Personally, I'm fatalist about it. I don't particularly think it would happen, but if it does there's nothing much I could do about it and I hope I go in the first strike. The worst fate would be to survive nuclear war.

Nimbostratus100 · 22/01/2023 09:57

and if it happens, you wont know a thing about it

Nimbostratus100 · 22/01/2023 09:57

Those of us in our 50s will remember the time and energy wasted worrying about htis in our teen years. It was a waste of worry then, and it is a waste of worry now

Lydiala · 22/01/2023 09:57

Pretty much everything you have said there is wrong. You clearly know next to nothing about Ukraine and Russia, so as someone who knows a lot more than you, I can assure you that there is nothing to worry about. Putin is not going to nuke us over Germany maybe sending Leopard tanks.

To go through your errors one by one:

Ukraine had a pro-eastern leader before the current one.
Nope - the leader before Zelensky was Petro Poroshenko who was very much not pro-Eastern. You’re thinking of Viktor Yanukovych, the president before Poroshenko, who was ousted in 2014. So Ukrainians have not had a pro-Russian president since 2014, and have not elected one since 2010. The political views of Ukrainians have understandably changed dramatically since then, and no one with Yanukovych’s position on Russia would ever be elected today, so I really don’t know what point you think you’re making.

When Ukraine had their elections, American senetors were canvassing for the current pro-western man.
Nope, definitely not true. Besides at the time of the 2019 election, Zelensky was not as the ‘pro-western candidate.’ He was seen as being softer on Russia than Poroshenko who he was campaigning against.

Look at this article from 2019 - it explains how Russian officials relished the prospect of Poroshenko’s loss and saw Zelensky’s impending election as good news.

YANBU to think a nuke might end up being used, but
YABU to be so afraid.

If a nuke is used, it will likely be a tactical nuke..so not the massive gigaton ones we are capable of using, but a smaller backpack sized one. And it would probably be used within Ukraine. I think Putin would be happy to own Ukraine even if it has radioactive wastelands within it. He wouldn’t launch a nuclear missile to a city outside Ukraine imho.

The tanks meh, not the issue people think it is. Putin is not afraid of our tanks. Certainly won’t be throwing in the towel over 14 tanks. I think sadly that the 14 tank crews and support are really going to test the new Chobham Dorchester tank armour against Russias new anti-tank missiles. The tanks have no hope of bringing down the attack night hunter helicopters firing these missiles off, so to Putin it is a fairly risk free way to test his new anti-tank missiles. Hes already been blowing up Ukraine Soviet era tanks and armoured vehicles with them since October. Our tank crews and support personnel are at real risk of death though.

Even if our tanks are impervious, look at the map and the terrain…there is no way they could reclaim and hold the parts of Ukraine under Russian control. Especially with no air support..and we aren’t sending any air support. Ukraines Air Force is badly outnumbered and outgunned. If they divert resources to provide air support to our tanks, that leaves an opening for Russias Air Force to exploit.

This isn’t going to end the war in Ukraine, it is to Europe and US advantage to drag the war out as long as possible to weaken Putin/Russia. And it’s to Chinas advantage to sit back and watch us weaken each other. Weakness isn’t just military resources, but also our economies. And the U.K. economy is circling the drain.

into sending a few tanks that will not make a big difference or any difference but is seen as a red line by Putin.

It’s not ‘a few tanks’ - about 15 EU countries have bought Leopard tanks from Germany. This means that once Germany gives permission; hundreds of those tanks can be sent to Ukraine pretty much straight away. It also means there are plenty of EU countries, including nearby ones, to train Ukrainian soldiers on the tanks, and to repair the tanks when they are damaged.

The tanks are far more advanced than the ancient Soviet ones the Ukrainians have captured - they would give Ukraine a huge advantage in repelling the expected spring offensive by Russia. That’s why Putin is trying so desperately to stop Germany from agreeing.

@FamousPrincess

There's been something a bit odd about the Mail's coverage of this conflict ever since it started.

They've made a habit of publishing on a regular basis generally fact light/fact free scare stories along these lines - nukes/superweapons/hypersonic missiles and torpedoes etc.

They hit peak nuke last summer and have come off that high but here we go again

The charitable might say it's simply being done to generate clicks, the less charitable more cynical (like myself) are beginning to wonder other forces are at work.

Anyhow OP, despite the scaremongering last year we are still here so I'd put the worries, plus the Daily Mail, plus the Mail on Sunday, on an ignore...

Oh and BTW Chancellor Mr Scholz....send the tanks.
