To find media discussion about trans issues far overstated compared to the actual seriousness of the issue?

Full disclosure, I happily accept most trans people I've met as their transitioned gender which I know puts me at odds with most people on MN. But as a feminist and a lefty, even if one views trans women as men which I don't, in terms of political priorities it ranks so list on my list of concerns. I assume that applies to most people too (trans people included!).

What someone has listed on their birth certificate has no impact on my life, and surely minimal impact on most women's lives? Imo we should be focusing on cost of living crisis, housing, properly funding women's services including rape crisis services, funding childcare, sorting out the health service and bloody schools! Gender recognition comes way below those for me (even though I'm broadly supportive with some checks in place).

I know gender criticals won't agree with me, and maybe some trans people who feel very strongly, but I do feel there's a silent majority of us who just aren't that fussed?

It's astonishing OP that you don't realise the optics of waving away all the horrific instances and overstepping of female rights with essentially "we don't need a GRC to do this we'll do it anyway"

<<slow clap>>

In what world do you live where any teacher can shower or share a room with any student???

Agreed, totally weird comment, I would be appalled if any of my children showered with a teacher of any sex 😐

Agree but what the fuck is gender?
What is gender identity?

How does a person know if they have one?

Why is it necessary to falsify sex on passports if you have one?

Gender is a way how society treats people based on their sex. All those crap which doesn't come from biology, like blue and pink, and default parents and wife's work. However, I understand gender only as a statistical phenomenon. It isn't about individuals, it is about patterns. Therefore it doesn't make much sense to talk about individuals changing their gender, as they can't undo the way how they were brought up.

I don't know what exactly a gender identity is either. I doubt I have it. I understand it is a personal feeling which some people have, it is important to them, we shouldn't question it and it can change at any moment. I accept the idea, but I don't see why anyone else, including state should care about it.

1 in 3 employers have said the won't employ a trans worker, so I hardly think there are going to a spate of high earners distorting statistics. Also they make 0.5% of the population according the census. www.crosslandsolicitors.com/site/hr-hub/transgender-discrimination-in-UK-workplaces

At what percentage do you think we should stop allowing men to say they're women? You know rates are rising right?

Amazing.

Still would love to know how sex is recorded for a non binary.

Anyone know?

Rainbowshit · 21/01/2023 00:06

I guess this horror doesn't need a GRC to be showering next to female prisoner. Eh OP?

Oh yes so it's stereotypes. I know about those.

Just not sure why not doing stereotypes means some men get to falsify passports and go in women's prisons .

BarmyBrunhilde · 21/01/2023 00:08

So because I disagree with you I must be a man? Women have different views on this area, I'm sorry if that disappoints you.

Yep. Especially when women (actual women) are disadvantaged in health care. Allowing even more men to be falsely recorded as women obscures that fact. Only a word class dick would support that.

And all the tedious now OP DOES concede that a man who is GRC as a woman earning more could alter the statistics but it’s only 0.5… so who cares etc!

Well OP obviously doesn’t know anything about data and statistics. And yes I do know I work with it. For many things these ‘outliers’ seriously muck up data, and also data is about truths, and truths are about trust that we know and record is truthful.

I can’t tell you the lengths that have to be gone through to sift through data ton ensure it’s accuracy. Age and Sex are the two most common differences that we depend on for so many crucial data sets for our lives. So yes, not knowing what sex people really are is a huge deal. Cancer for example and others can be rare events and even a small, yes even a 0.5% change can mean the difference between testing for effect treatments, service planning, understanding and these are all fed into research which has to have this data.

Rainbowshit · 21/01/2023 00:08

This is irrelevant for GRCs is it OP?

Father was arrested for protesting about cover up of his daughter's rape in the female toilets by a trans student.

Maybe that teacher identified as a child. Would you be happy for your female child to shower next to a fully intact fully developed male in something that purported to be a female shower?

Actually it's men doing the opposite stereotypes that gets them in prisons - lightbulb moment.

So if I wear trousers and adopt a low speaking voice do I get to achieve equal pay?

I wouldn't let my children shower next to naked adults (parents excluded) in any circumstances

Or not, because rapists get to be called women if they say they are one.

So confusing.

And rapists get to go to women's prisons if they 'identify as being trans'.

It disappoints me when anyone feels that a woman should accept being locked in a prison cell with a man in order to validate his belief that he's more like her than other people with penises. I do accept than women can very this àggressive to other women to though so can believe that you might be an actual woman.

Well ok we're approaching some (rare) honestly here at least. The crux of this is not GRR reform for most posters on this thread. The general view is that GRA should be repealed, trans people should not be able to change their legal sex in any circurmstances and this should be carefully policed in any situation where sex may be relevant.

Sorry no. This is a men's rights movement. It only benefits biological males. Same old same old.

There is case law trans people can use spaces of their transitioned gender in many circumstances, so not quite sure what you mean here? www.lawcentres.org.uk/policy/news/news/kirklees-law-centre-wins-landmark-transgender-discrimination-case

That’s not a precedent - actually the equality act does allow single sex spaces. The EHRC has made that clear.

we should not falsify official documents. Whether or not someone has a mental illness or a fetish or something else is irrelevant. Men and women are defined biologically. We know what they are and it’s absolutely critical we don’t get bullied into lying about it. Men are not women and women are not men. Pretending otherwise is not helpful to anyone.

Bit of a random flex OP?

Ah. It all becomes clear. You're fishing for screenshots for Twitter.

I've asked several times now.

What is a trans person?

What is it about being a 'trans person' that makes you think that they should be able to falsify legal documents?
