Thus creating employment and supporting the economy. We'd miss them if they all left the country, and a lot of them are going. About 12,000 millionaires left the UK since 2017 according to Henley & Partners, which studies the subject. Dollar millionaires, so about £850,000.

Exactly this. Those who have money and are happy to spend it are the backbone of our economy.

Um, excuse me? I agree about spending on perishable items maybe, but only if you mean low-quality items that seem cheaper but in perspective you'll spend more replacing them. Splurging on a more expensive item that is of a better quality is smart but many people can't afford it sadly.
I disagree with you about reading or having a hobby. In fact, reading might be a hobby on its own and also there are lots of options to do entertaining or fulfilling things on a budget (ie you don't need to attend a gym, working out at home might be just as productive if you're motivated, or you don't have to go after some pricey software like Photoshop to edit your photos, when there are more affordable options like Photoworks, etc).

I meant the kind of confidence that goes with financial security, compared with people living a more challenging life financially. Some feel terrible pressure to buy lifestyle items to keep up with the Joneses. It's like those who can afford stuff don't always feel the need, whereas some of those who can't afford stuff really feel obliged to stretch themselves. So the wealthy have more choice, and, for example, can confidently stick with an old mobile phone without feeling left behind or judged.

I read everything (like absolutely everything that comes in reach), and have done since I was a small child. Learnt to read age 3. DS is also an avid reader, age 7. He even read the blood donor booklet at the blood donor centre yesterday.

With our distinctly working class family history, please kindly advise my bank account that there has been some mistake.

GettingRidic · 12/01/2023 15:15

They read no one else.
They eat like no one else.
They sleep like no one else.
They work like no one else.
Laugh.
Cry.
Bathe/Shower.
Etc.

All like no one else. They're amazing.

Do you actually know what perishable means?

I grew up in a shared flat, we had very little money, my siblings and I all enjoyed reading, we also all had hobbies.

As far as I know wealthy people do actually eat food.

Luxury! I remember ...
(actually I can't remember the rest! Something about having to get up before we went to bed and getting soundly whipped 😁😁😁)
I'm sure somebody will help out.

It’s true. What’s with the crying laughing face?

I can’t imagine any of the wealthy people I know having Botox or fillers! I know a lot of very wealthy people, but sadly, I’m not one of them.

Why can't you imagine it?

Because I know them all well.

And what is it about them that makes you think they wouldn't do it?

Play the harp.
Husband and wife have separate bedrooms
Have friends over for kitchen sups

Oh this puts me in mind of a poster who used to talk about this stuff!

Different priorities, I suppose. Most of my friends are always busy, and looking youthful isn’t something they bother about. They all scrub up well when needed though.

I accept my friendship group may have different priorities to other very wealthy people though. It just made me laugh when I thought about it.

Well, you might be surprised. A Botox appointment is quicker than a haircut, and often cheaper than a cut and colour, since you don't do it as often. There are many reasons not to do it, all of them fine of course, but it isn't as if it's difficult to slot into a busy life.

But I think the idea that only a certain type of person does it - one with those "priorities", which for some reason do seem to be seen differently to a cut and colour - is one reason why people don't tend to talk about it. You may be surprised if you think it takes a certain "type" of person.

HangoverSquare · 11/01/2023 23:15

Is this going to be one of those 'nouveau riche people are brash and vulgar squawkers' and 'a lovely viscount in ancient red trousers once let his labrador shit on my foot and I was ever so grateful to him' threads?

Possibly, but only if the viscount lives on the kind of military ration packs with a use by date in the 24rd century, and the nouveau riche parvenu occasionally eats fruit, veg or meat.

EffortlessDesmond · 12/01/2023 19:52

Years ago, I used to know all sorts of wealthy aristo types, and I'm fairly sure most women resorted to Botox when they hit a certain age. It's just part of the maintenance regime, along with fruit and veg and Pilates.

MissingMoominMamma · 12/01/2023 20:00

Well we’re all in our 50s, with faces to match. If they’re having Botox, they should probably ask for a refund…

ReneBumsWombats · 12/01/2023 20:11

Botox doesn't generally make you look younger. It just makes you look less lined. I don't get it to look younger, it doesn't do that for me. Just makes me look less tired and angry.

Of course your friends might not get it...probably most people don't. But it isn't as expensive or as time consuming as you might think. And you might be surprised at who's often in the waiting room too. There's a stereotype of who gets Botox, and it's totally unfounded. You really wouldn't know most of the time.

Do you mean by not spending on perishable items that one lives off Bolly then you are correct 🥂 …. Also see Champagne tasting for a hobby and reading of wine labels to check the vintage 🍾

I think the smaller someone’s tv is is a sign of wealth.

Georgyporky · 13/01/2023 18:03

@Saju1

I've read a lot of bollocks on MN, but this is surely the bollockiest.

(I think I've invented a new word, but seems to fit in with the MN vocabulary.)
