OP posts:

I think everyone is different obviously.

But there are certain stereotypes which probably have some truth. Such as never having the latest gadgets, having furniture passed down over generations, wearing old clothes that last. But I think I mean people who have been wealthy for generations.

I imagine more newly wealthy people cover the full range of behaviour.

I guess you don’t stay wealthy if you spend it all though

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 12/01/2023 10:28

Have you been at the UHU?

This is a weird thread.

I wonder if a ‘habits of poor people’ thread would make it to 6 pages 🙄

Literally everyone is taking the piss. I don’t think anyone is actually taking It seriously except the OP.

Some wealthy people do have that confidence not to feel the need to buy ostentatiously - eg shabby car (handy for dogs and horsey stuff), less obsession with showy holidays, and a certain contentment with what they've got - I sometimes try to emulate that!

No need to be wealthy to live like that.

AdoraBell · 12/01/2023 10:32

🤣🤣 @LubaLuca

WeDoNotTalktoPennilynLott · 12/01/2023 10:41

My wealthy relatives are proper scrimpers and don't like spending their own money.

Flowersinthebasement · 12/01/2023 10:50

As others have said, most "old moneyed" types are not ostentatious. They blend in fine, but have the confidence of wealth to know they will never have to worry about bills etc.

The nouveau riche types on the other hand can be full on out there, lots of bling and shows of material wealth, probably all on credit.

I fall into the first category Wink

Mumsnet is obsessed with class, really it is.

Mumsnet is obsessed with class, really it is.

It's a funny mix of being obsessed with class and not being "common", while also running down expensive things because apparently truly wealthy and upper class people never buy them, and only old money counts anyway. I've seen the "money talks, wealth whispers" stuff a lot.

It's kind of horrible.

luckylavender · 12/01/2023 10:57

Very odd post. Such generic things. Apart from perishable items.

Their worship at the altar of "wealth" and old money is quite amusing actually. They all know a truly wealthy upper class person with great manners and an old volvo covered with dog hair.

What I find horrible is the veneration of these old monied people and the desperate desire to relate to them, be it via "how to look expensive" or "look at me I am so middle class" or insisting blindly that these rich folk never spend money

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 12/01/2023 11:06

I was thinking this might be a new poster who had no idea what to say, but in fact @Saju1 has posted eloquently enough on other threads. I wonder if they're too embarrassed to come back here now, and will have a quick name change? They must be loaded to as they posted about going to Centre Parcs before Christmas. Prob new money though Hmm

NoWayRose · 12/01/2023 11:11

Is not the whole of Waitrose perishable?

Paterson8080 · 12/01/2023 11:14

God you lot are quick to judge. The question is what wealthy people do that others don't. The reference to "reading" obviously means having the leisure time to read novels. The reference to "perishable" items obviously means not having to be careful about buying food on a budget.

Wealthy people are neither a homogeneous group nor separate from the rest of society.

Some wealthy people will read voraciously others may never pick up a book.
Some are workaholics others are lazy and living off unearned income.
Some are obsessed with clean eating and fresh food others less so. Bill Gates is known for his love of fast food. The previous Duke of Westminster was a heavy smoker with a Diet Coke habit.

There is no special set of behaviours that can be attributed to all wealthy people. There are plenty of academic/museum/library jobs that won’t pay high wages where the holder is much better educated and well read than many much wealthier people.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/01/2023 11:40

Yes, MN really is obsessed with class - some MNers cite class in relation to the most ridiculous things that have nothing to do with it - except in their presumably insecure heads.

Paterson8080 · 12/01/2023 11:53

ChazsBrilliantAttitude - read Veblen's Theory of the Leisure Class - if Veblen can generalise then I think it's OK to do so

EffortlessDesmond · 12/01/2023 12:07

Fresh pasta is easy and cheap to make, once you have got a pasta roller. And tastes far better than anything that costs £2 in the supermarket. An egg and 100g of 00 flour per portion.

InPraiseOfBacchus · 12/01/2023 12:15

Jack Monroe, is that you?

I only ask because she recently asserted that poor people open tins with knives because tin openers are a sign of wealth.

EffortlessDesmond · 12/01/2023 12:18

Sorry to disappoint you, but no, I am not Jack Monroe. My DC is a chef!

autienotnaughty · 12/01/2023 12:44

I read a lot and have hobby's and I'm working class. Are you implying the poor are thick?? Not sure about perishables

I think OP is implying something about Mumsnet, and has done it rather well.

ortonym · 12/01/2023 12:44

And here's me living in a shoe-box in the middle of the road.

<waits patiently>

autienotnaughty · 12/01/2023 12:45
