to wonder if a 5’7 female is ‘big’

I’m a 5’7 and a half female, in your completely honest opinion do you think I’m tall or average height. I feel massive and huge next to every other girl, don’t wear heels ever and hate it.
im just under 9st and feel I just look like this absolute giant.
I never am called tall by anyone but believe I am.
In your opinion is 5’7-5’8 ‘really tall’ for a female

XenoBitch · 07/07/2023 22:55

I am 5ft 8. That is above the UK female average. All of my female friends are shorter than me.
But then, I am fat too!

Parlourgames · 07/07/2023 22:57

No, that’s my height. I don’t feel particularly tall.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 07/07/2023 23:01

I'm 5'8" and quite often get comments that I'm 'so tall'. I'm quite lanky with long arms and legs, so I think that's what people pick up on. I don't feel that tall, but do enjoy being able to reach things from higher shelves!

Parlourgames · 07/07/2023 22:57

No, that’s my height. I don’t feel particularly tall.

I am 5ft 6 and always called myself tall and am a bit Shock faced when called short; I like my height though. I reckon because Mum is 5ft 2 and called me tall (as a compliment she says I am lucky)

I think it is relative Grin

LuciferRising · 07/07/2023 23:12

What's wrong with being short?

JassyRadlett · 07/07/2023 23:13

WhiteCatmas · 07/01/2023 18:49

Go to Germany or the Netherlands, far away from Hobbiton.
There 5 foot 7 is small.

This! I love the Netherlands because 5'9 me feels relatively average sized. It's such a weird, but nice, feeling.

No- one said it was wrong. Murder is wrong. Short is just short.

But Mum would say the top shelf at the Supermarket and being short do not mix.

TrishTrix · 07/07/2023 23:18

I'm 5'7" and feel unremarkable.

My sense is that I'm on the taller side of the bell curve but not to the extent that my height is comment worthy in anyway.

I do however have a large frame. One of my close friends is that same height as me. She has size 4 feet and I have size 8 feet. She is super slim.

Even if I lost a shed load of weight I don't think I'd ever be much smaller than a size 14 - my pelvis and rib cage are huge in comparison to hers!

catandcoffee · 07/07/2023 23:24

That's not really tall OP I've got 3 nieces who are between 5ft 7 and 5ft 8, they wear heels too.
Be proud of your self and walk tall.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 07/07/2023 23:29

I’m 5ft 2 (and a half!), I’m generally considered a bit of a short arse. My sisters and all of my female colleagues are all taller than me by at least a couple of inches quite a few even more than that. I always struggle with long dresses or skirts and pants in shops being too long by at least a couple of inches. I’d therefore agree that 5ft 7 is probably within the average range.

Cattenberg · 07/07/2023 23:32

You’re tall, but also a perfectly normal height. According to the ONS, the average height for a UK woman is between 5’3” and 5’4”. So you’re as far from average as a woman who’s 5’0”.

It might not feel that way though, because we’re bombarded by images of very tall models. Also people often end up with friends who look broadly similar to them - people they literally see eye to eye with!

This is the thing isn't it, people think of height and weight and BMI only.
But it's about shape too. I have a wide frame, wide shoulders and hips.. so when I was 9.5 stone size 10 I was physically ill with symptoms of anorexia.. couldn't sit for long as pelvis stuck out, periods stopped, always cold etc. Yet other women wouldn't have those symptoms until they were a size 4.
I'm really thin at 5ft 7 11 stone but rarely get believed on here.

Isitthathardtobekind · 07/07/2023 23:44

I get you on this! I’m 172cm so about the same I think. For years I have can’t talk compared to friends- especially when going out. I’m usually the tallest by some way - and that’s been the same over the years with different groups.

TheNinny · 07/07/2023 23:49

I’m 5’7.75 so round up to 5’8. I’m the tallest woman out of work colleagues but don’t feel abnormally tall. I have longer legs than most but normal torso 🤣 a few people have commented to me about ‘how nice it would be to be tall like you’ etc but it’s not very often. I don’t shop on the tall section of clothes shops except if size is out of stock in regular etc. I feel my legs are only just out with normal length, which makes trouser shopping annoying, but tall section stuff is often too long 🤷‍♀️ I suppose I’d say I’m above average height and use ‘tallish’ but wouldn’t necessarily say I’m tall. My cousin at 5’10 is definitely. I think from 5’9 up I’d personally class as tall for women.

Hoppymclimpy · 07/07/2023 23:54

Well if you're tall I'm obviously a giant....I'm 6ft in flats! My 12 year old daughter is 5ft 7....are we taller than many? Yep....does it bother us? Only when trousers are never long enough. I'm 45 now and I do remember hating my height when younger so I'm encouraging my DD to embrace her height. We can't change our height and I come from a tall family, my brother is 6ft 7. Ironically, most of my female friends are shorter than average and my best mate is 4ft 11.....we laugh about the difference in our height. Whilst I'm aware I'm taller than many women (and men!) it's more in an abstract way rather than noticing it all the time....it is what it is!
I hope I don't sound dismissive and apologies of it comes across as such but height is a genetic based thing that, medical issues aside, we don't have control over. I can't change my height so I've learnt to embrace it...it's part of the whole package of me!

StrawberrySquash · 07/07/2023 23:57

Statistically taller than most women. It's the height I am, but I don't feel as in I notice it really. Especially as I'm nothing tall once you compare me to adults of both sexes.

FluffyPinkSocks · 08/07/2023 00:01

I’m 5’7 in height. Always have been told I’m ‘big’, I’m not! I’ve got long legs, 33in inside leg, I think that’s what me look big to others

GrohlOnAPole · 08/07/2023 00:06

I would think “quite tall” but not really tall.
mum 5’6” and in the family I’m tall as the other women are 5’2” & 5’3”. But I meet loads of women taller than me.

Annaishere · 08/07/2023 00:06

I’m 5’6 and a half to 7. It is tall ish but I like it

DelphiniumBlue · 08/07/2023 00:14

Tall ( ish) but not really tall. And at 9 stone you are probably quite slim. Certainly not massive!

Fuckit83 · 08/07/2023 00:56

I'm 6ft. Wish I was so much shorter, but then I am a 16 so would be even fatter than I think I already am if I were shorter!! I would love to be 5ft 3in and a size 8. Yet here I am!!

Nooo!! You sound amazing. Don't wish being shorter. I'm 5 8 and I'd love to be taller.

Uk average height for females is 162cm iirc. So yes with 170cm you are above average. Not something spectacular, but above, yes

Yes, however that is across the entire adult population. Elderly people on average are much smaller, partially because of poor nutrition in children, so they lower the overall average. The OP is fairly average among women 18-50 in the UK.

Interestingly average height of young people in the UK is now starting to decrease again, probably also due to poor nutrition.

SolarPoweredHuman · 08/07/2023 13:30

Also, it's great to be tall! Clothes generally look better on you, if you put on weight it doesn't show so much, taller people on average earn more. Very useful for sports, too. And when in crowds. 😊

What do you mean 'half female'?
