DH and I have a tradition of always getting a Chinese takeaway on 1st Jan, and this year for the first time we're extending it to the kids too.

So, just that really, what is your go to order? I'm looking for inspiration. DH always has a chow mein (lovely but boring as he has it every time), DS has already requested sweet and sour chicken and DD will probably have some sort of fried rice or maybe chicken satay.

I eat almost anything and am starving, help me decide what to have oh wise mumsnetters!

JorisBonson · 01/01/2023 16:28

When I still ate meat it would always be crispy chili beef, egg fried rice, a pancake roll and a quarter duck.

These days I like mushrooms in oyster sauce, veggie Singapore noodles and a veggie pancake roll.

UnpackThisMess · 01/01/2023 16:28

Do you mean he just has a chow mein and your kids just have 1 dish each? When I order a Chinese I usually order special chow mein, egg fried rice, sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style, various starters but always prawn toast, quarter duck &Pancakes etc, beef in black bean sauce and lemon chicken. Usually comes with prawn Crackers and we usually eat it between 2 of us for dinner then for lunch the next day 😆 its a treat we usually have it once every 2 months so we really go for it. Sometimes some salt and chilli chicken wings too. Yum.

Chickenvoicesinmyhead · 01/01/2023 16:28

Crispy chilli beef

peasando · 01/01/2023 16:28

Ooh salt and pepper chips I was obsessed with them when I was pregnant with DD but haven't had them for years!

Salt & Pepper Shredded Chicken
Singapore Chow Mein
Prawn Toast

StrawberryWater · 01/01/2023 16:30

Me: Sweet and sour chicken with egg fried rice and either spring rolls or soup.

Oh: Aromatic duck to start and then beef with green peppers in black bean sauce and and egg fried rice. He’ll sometimes have a chow mein. He’ll also get himself some fritters (think they’re pinapple).

Ds: Will have egg fried rice and some chicken.

Soubriquet · 01/01/2023 16:30

I also have this one particular dish from one particular restaurant. Never know what it’s called but it’s pork in a tangy sauce. Really nice

Squirrelsnut · 01/01/2023 16:31

Garlic and chilli stir fry, protein of your choice. So savoury 😛

QuizzlyBears · 01/01/2023 16:31

I like crispy chilli beef, mushroom chow mein, seaweed and prawn toasts. And bits of everyone else’s!

peasando · 01/01/2023 16:31

Yes he just has a chow mein hence boring! I like to order a mix of things so usually end up getting a selection of starters, DH gets grumpy if I order 'too much food' he's pretty good at finishing it off though.

Kids are still quite small so only getting one thing each but of course can/will taste some of ours as well.

Am wondering about getting one of the set banquets...

I often try new things. I also often get chicken with ginger and spring onion. And I like noodley things, and pancake rolls, and spare ribs. I tend to order twice as much as I need and have lots of different bits and spin it out over 2 nights.

Legallypinkish · 01/01/2023 16:33

We order house curry, egg fried rice, magic chop cam, house chow mein, chicken in spicy fruity sauce, sweet and sour chicken balls, salt and pepper chips and deep fried salt and pepper chicken. We all share.

HangryFeminist · 01/01/2023 16:33

I just order crispy duck and pancakes, and refuse to share 😂

Our local Chinese does amazing dumplings though, I could just eat those and be happy.

Blossomandbee · 01/01/2023 16:34

Chicken or king prawn chow mein.
Sweet and sour chicken balls.
Prawn crackers.

Not very inspiring I'm afraid, I'd love to try other stuff but I have to be careful with allergies and I'm not sure what to order!

TheDietStartsTomorrowOrMaybeTheDayAfter · 01/01/2023 16:34

Crispy chilli beef
Lemon chicken
singapore noodles
sweet and sour chicken balls
House special fried rice
prawn toast
prawn crackers
salt and pepper chips

We sometimes mix it up and get duck pancakes instead of one of the mains.

Fairydustandsparklylights · 01/01/2023 16:35

We always have bbq ribs in sauce, crispy chilli beef, lemon chicken, crispy seaweed and special fried rice. Sometimes if we’re really hungry we get sweet and sour prawn balls and a big pancake roll. It’s enough for dinner and lunch the next day for 2 of us. It’s amazing!!
