DH and I have a tradition of always getting a Chinese takeaway on 1st Jan, and this year for the first time we're extending it to the kids too.

So, just that really, what is your go to order? I'm looking for inspiration. DH always has a chow mein (lovely but boring as he has it every time), DS has already requested sweet and sour chicken and DD will probably have some sort of fried rice or maybe chicken satay.

I eat almost anything and am starving, help me decide what to have oh wise mumsnetters!

We have the Set Meal B for two (although it feeds 3 easily if we get an extra egg fried rice).
10 chicken balls with that sauce.
1 portion of beef and mushroom
1 portion of Kung Fu chicken
1 special fried rice.
Prawn knackers.
The price of the set meal is £19.50 plus the extra rice is £4. The beef and the Kung Po are double portions.

Ok so I made schoolgirl error of ordering when starving (tee hee) and we had way too much food but I have promised v stroppy DH that the kids and I will polish off the rest for lunch tomorrow (what he doesn't eat after we go to bed, anyway!)

We had:

Hot and sour soup (me)
Dry spare ribs (DH)
Chicken satay skewers
Chicken chow mein
Prawns with ginger and spring onion
Sweet and sour chicken Cantonese style
Sweet and sour chicken balls
Plain soft noodles
Chips

And the restaurant threw in free veggie spring rolls and two bags of prawn crackers

Everyone ate loads and now I just want a big sleep!!

Not worth ordering if you arent getting salt and chilli squid!

ChicagoBears · 01/01/2023 19:49

Singapore fried rice
Selection of dim sum
Peking crispy duck pancakes
Chicken satay

Hidingawaytoday · 01/01/2023 19:54

We get a set menu with prawn toast, sweet and sour pork, crispy chilli beef and egg fried rice. It also comes with chicken in mushroom sauce but we usually swap that for something else as DH isn't a fan. Then we just share it all out between the two of us.

@Soubriquet you are my Chinese takeaway soulmate. Add some veg spring rolls and a pot of black bean sauce and we’d be having the night in of our lives 😉

We’ll make a night of it!

daisydoods · 01/01/2023 20:47

We always have one every New Years Eve 😊 dh had chips, noodles and curry, and I had crispy vegetable noodles with curry sauce, delicious!

EnglishMuffins · 01/01/2023 21:46

We get several dishes and have a bit of everything on the plate.

Generally it’s:

chilli crispy shredded beef
Singapore vermacelli noodles
duck in plum sauce
special fried rice
salt and pepper chicken
peking spare ribs
spring rolls

Duckingella · 01/01/2023 21:56

Can't really comment as the Chinese we order from was the Chinese my parents ordered from went I was a kid and they have several "signature" dishes of their own that we order that are amazing.

One of my favourites is one they do that is super crispy chicken with almost caramelised onions in a sweet n spicey sauce which they layer onto a bed of egg fried rice. It's delicious.

Zanatdy · 01/01/2023 21:58

It's all got that msg stuff in I think so tastes quite similar and gloopy

Always one! Educate yourself, you little ignoramus.

Glittertwins · 02/01/2023 08:36

For the first time ever, we didn't have any leftovers, teenage locusts polished it off. We generally do order more so DH has the rest the next day though.

Not at all. If that's the case where you are you need to find a new Chinese Restaurant/takeaway.

Our local one is fabulous the chefs are excellent and worth the wait for food as its mostly cooked to order.

Most people love Beef in Black Bean sauce.
my Favourite, Mongolian lamb.
I prefer sweet & sour Pork.
Chinese Curried Chicken is delicious.

For a family of Four I would get,

Entrees - mini spring rolls . Salt & pepper Squid OR Chicken & Sweet Corn soup.

Mains - 1 Beef, 1 chicken, 1 pork & 1 Lamb dish.

eg, Beef in Black Bean Sauce, Chicken Chow mein, Sweet & Sour Pork & Mongolian Lamb, the lamb is a spicy dish.

Sides - 1 large special fried rice ( usually includes, bbq pork, chicken & Prawns.
1 small steamed Rice
Fried Noodles & prawn chips.

that is a lovely celebration banquet for 4-6 people with left overs for tomorrow.

ask at the restaurant most have a “Banquet” option to cater for 3-6 people.

I used to work in a Chinese restaurant, I love Chinese food.
