To Think We Should Still Be Wearing Masks

Especially seeing the news coming out of China, and the lies they seem to be telling about the Covid situation there.

I never stopped wearing a mask when shopping anyway, even though we were told it was no longer necessary.

Yes, I know that most people have now been vaccinated.

OP posts:
QueSyrahSyrah · 29/12/2022 01:45

Nope, I hated them and as a glasses wearer they often rendered me blind. No judgement if someone else chooses to wear one; but I will only do so if asked to.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 29/12/2022 01:45

No, we're vaccinated now. Those of us who are vulnerable have been offered booster shots.

By all means I wouldn't judge any one for wearing one if they felt it would protect themselves, but otherwise it's not necessary.

Mummieslncorporated · 29/12/2022 01:58

The situation in China is completely irrelevant to the situation here. They dealt with COVID very differently - they have recently changed from a zero COVID, very strict policy, to a 'let's get back to normal ' policy in a much less measured way than the rest of the world did. Without the level of immunity that the rest of the world has, of course it's going to be rife.

Am I right in thinking the person wearing the mask is protecting the non wearer from the virus? so if the non mask wearer has covid they could still infect the mask wearer, if so whats the point

I believe people (like myself) who need to still wear masks choose ones that protect the wearer . I'd rather not but I'm immune supressed with rubbish lungs 🤷🏻‍♀️

Intransigentcat · 29/12/2022 02:05

I've taken the approach that I don't wear one unless I am unwell myself. If I have a cough or cold then I wear one in public to try to prevent transmission.

Ivyonafence · 29/12/2022 02:08

YANBU.

I wish they would make it mandatory in enclosed spaces like trains and shops. I'm so sick of travelling to work with people coughing all through the carriage.

For most people wearing a mask is no great undertaking. I can't believe the way people wail and carry on about it.

We don't know what the long term impacts of Covid are, but it doesn't look good. I don't want to catch Covid if I can help it.

Diverging · 29/12/2022 02:09

I got a train (uk) the other day and it was packed. I noticed quite a lot of people were wearing masks.

Ivyonafence · 29/12/2022 02:10

PlusLaMeme · 29/12/2022 01:28

No. Absolutely not. Never again.

Mask wearing destroyed my mental health. I am claustrophobic and I couldn't bear having my mouth and nose covered, it felt like I was being choked. I coped by basically not going anywhere or doing anything. I became such a hermit that my family and close friends were worried sick about me. Even after masks were no longer mandated, it took me ages and ages to be able to go out to shops and restaurants without having an underlying dread that somebody would yell at me for being unmasked.

I will never go back to that again. If the government dares to bring that abomination back again, this time I will revolt.

You were frightened to go to a shop in case someone told you off. What's the plan for the revolution you're leading?

Seriously- What do people mean when they say they'll revolt?

Woopzies · 29/12/2022 02:10

Everyone saying no but no one has a valid reason other than 'let's move on....'

Officially, OP? Yes, we should all wear masks. No one does though simply because they can't be bothered - same people will still complain when they get COVID though.

I've continued to wear a mask and haven't had COVID, and haven't had a cold since 2019 - I'm absolutely loving it. 😅

NIparty · 29/12/2022 02:14

Wearing a mask made my asthma worse and harder to control. So no.

Who said I was planning to lead a revolution? I said I would revolt. I'm not wearing a mask again, no matter what.

I have a valid reason....it's none of your business what that reason is though.

Murdoch1949 · 29/12/2022 02:17

I never stopped. Easy for me though, retired, online shopper. Masks will be here for ever.

Woopzies · 29/12/2022 02:21

So don't post on a thread discussing reasons for and against then? Quite simple really.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 29/12/2022 02:24

I worry far more for the long term health of our children at the thought of them being deprived of building their immune system than I am about getting what is essentially a bad cold.

I really thought the COVID scaremongering had stopped and we all agreed that being OTT and hysterical in Spring 2020 was a rather embarrassing time in our history that we’d all rather forget

GatoradeMeBitch · 29/12/2022 02:28

Since mandatory mask wearing ended I've realized how disgusting people are. On the train, at the supermarket people just cough into the air, no attempt to cover their mouths. It's like during lockdown they just forgot how? On Christmas Eve I saw a woman wipe her nose with her hand then start rummaging through the baking potatoes!

Most of us own masks now. It should be a no-brainer to wear one while sick, just as a simple "I'm not a selfish cunt" courtesy. Instead it's almost like there's like a contest to spread germs as far and wide as possible. No wonder cold and flu rates are spiking.

Blimey who made you the thread prefect?

Exactly. Pigs.

I won't shop without a mask now.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 29/12/2022 03:01

I find people are more respectful / stay away from me more when I wear a mask so I still wear one.

It’s quite staggering how many people have gone straight back to coughing into their hands then touching bus seat handles, shopping items etc - some folks learned absolutely nothing at all.

Also an added bonus of masks is that far less creepy guys try and start random chats on the night bus

Mamma5464 · 29/12/2022 03:40

No. I live in a country where mask wearing was enforced until this year (and still is on public transport). It probably did slow transmission down, but we still had three waves of spread and everyone got COVID. It didn't stop it.

I'm of the opinion that if you're ill including having a cold but have to go out, then yes wear one out of consideration to others. But otherwise it's not that useful.

Woopzies · 29/12/2022 03:44

Just a friendly suggestion, given you seem to be so offended by people having normal discussions on a public forum. 😉

dolor · 29/12/2022 03:49

I never stopped using a mask.

tonystarksrighthand · 29/12/2022 03:51

Pelo22 · 28/12/2022 23:35

I've been wearing one shopping as I'm immunocompromised
Just tested positive today

Masked worked well then

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/12/2022 04:01

Only at work (care home) but hope to get rid of them next year.

TheKeatingFive · 29/12/2022 04:32

If you want to wear a mask, wear one. The days of compelling others are over.

The situation in China isn't relevant to here due to our high uptake of effective vaccines. Not sure what point you're making there.
