To Think We Should Still Be Wearing Masks

Especially seeing the news coming out of China, and the lies they seem to be telling about the Covid situation there.

I never stopped wearing a mask when shopping anyway, even though we were told it was no longer necessary.

Yes, I know that most people have now been vaccinated.

There is increasing evidence Covid persists in the body long after the initial infection and is damaging the human immune system. From NK cells, to dendritic cells, from naive T cells to B cells, even mild infections are causing harm. A couple of days ago, noted virologist Christian Drosten said it was possible repeat infections would give children the immune systems of an 80-year-old by the time they are 30. What would you do to avoid this virus if that proves to be the case? I'm to carry on wearing a well fitted N95/FFP2 mask and continue to avoid ever having Covid until that question of immune harm can be answered, which will likely be some time in 2023.

Well aren't you a ray of sunshine 😏

Agree. Others can roll the dice if they wish , but I've managed to evade Covid so far and intend to continue.

People forget that their immune systems fend off other diseases, like cancer.

ThaiDye · 29/12/2022 05:59

There's no question that masks help to reduce infection. Yes, you should wear them indoors and they should be mandatory in healthcare settings and public transport. It's absolutely insane that 39% of hospital admissions for COVID are from people catching COVID at hospital!

The health system is completely screwed and public health has completely given up on trying to maintain health. You need to do what you can to protect yourself and your family.

ThaiDye · 29/12/2022 06:02

@Chillyweather the belief that you need exposure to pathogens to build up your immune system is nonsense. Your immune system works fine without constant exposure to viruses, and catching COVID will damage your immune system, there's plenty of evidence of that in the scientific literature already.

No. I'm not prepared to go through life with cloth over my nose, it's not natural. If you want to then go for it, but I'm done pandering to fretters who want their personal preference imposed on everyone else.

This.
I do judge people who still cling to wearing masks - utterly ridiculous.

ChildcareIsBroken · 29/12/2022 06:26

I agree with you, OP, but not just because of COVID. My children bring so many nasty infection from nursery this autumn and winter, that I wear masks in shops, pharmacies, GP, public transport to avoid infecting others. I wish others did the same.

They all wear masks in China. Hows that working out?

Cherryblossoms85 · 28/12/2022 23:36

Seeing as they're so effective, why do you care whether anyone else wears them...

Because they stop the wearer spreading the disease. Surely you know that by now.

I hope you are as sanguine should your dentist or surgeon choose not to wear a mask.

Not so clever now, eh?

Woopzies · 29/12/2022 02:10

Everyone saying no but no one has a valid reason other than 'let's move on....'

Officially, OP? Yes, we should all wear masks. No one does though simply because they can't be bothered - same people will still complain when they get COVID though.

I've continued to wear a mask and haven't had COVID, and haven't had a cold since 2019 - I'm absolutely loving it. 😅

For me, getting a cold a couple of times a year like most people always have isnt enough to want me to wear a mask everytime I'm in public places. I don't read your post and think "oh wow that's worth it, bring it back!"

Roselilly36 · 29/12/2022 06:45

I wouldn’t wear a face mask again personally, they don’t work, total waste of time.

BCBird · 29/12/2022 06:50

I haven't stop wearing one-my choice. As for people thinkin u hsve Covid and giving u a wide berth,I wish they would for me. No idea of personal space. As for learning to live with it,I don't think this means all restrictions should be discarded. IMO a mask.is a very small.thing to do at very little inconvenience.

EllieRosesMammy · 29/12/2022 06:53

No, they were the most pointless part of the whole pandemic. All they did is cause a divide between people who could and couldn't wear them.

Im 100% all for keeping my distance from people and regular hand washing and always have been. But the masks? No thanks.

Bit of a difference between someone who is literally inside your body wearing the correct PPE as opposed to Susan shopping in B&M, who I hope wouldn't have her fist in your mouth...

hay5689 · 29/12/2022 07:05

@ZeldaWillTellYourFortune your mask won't protect you from people like the woman who wiped her nose then touched the baking potatoes. You need full hazmat gear if you are thinking along those lines.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 29/12/2022 07:08

I do wear disposable gloves at shops & petrol stations.

Tekkentime · 29/12/2022 07:21

Unless truly forced, and I mean legally that I can't get out of, not just social pressure, I will never wear a mask again.

I barely wore them before. If I see someone wearing one then I think that they watch the news too much. *

(* I know some of you will mention immune disorders but there's no need to bother messaging me about them)

Presumably you'd wear one in a hospital if asked? Although someone did refuse when I was visiting last week, another visitor. He made a big fuss about not wearing one and the staff couldn't force him. He looked and sounded a prat tbh.

Oblomov22 · 29/12/2022 07:27

No.
If you want to, carry on, I won't be.

GeneticallyModifiedGrump · 29/12/2022 07:28

Off topic but as the planet burns should we really be throwing away millions of single use masks? Not to mention the plastic they come wrapped in and the energy used to make them.
No OP, I will not be wearing bloody masks!

I would ask not to wear one. If they made me I would use it improperly. If i'm seen as a prat that's fine, I hold enforcers in contempt for what's happened in the last couple of years.

OK fair enough. This was a post transplant ward so I think masks were a thing pre Covid anyway.

BCBird · 29/12/2022 07:30

No idea why someone feels that mask wearers are ridiculous. It is personal choice now.

Quite. It's a bit like people thinking someone wearing a hat is ridiculous, just because they aren't cold.
