To Think We Should Still Be Wearing Masks

Especially seeing the news coming out of China, and the lies they seem to be telling about the Covid situation there.

I never stopped wearing a mask when shopping anyway, even though we were told it was no longer necessary.

Yes, I know that most people have now been vaccinated.

Except what you said is wrong. Part of good public health is everyone doing their bit when needed.

Oh right. ‘Don’t kill Granny’ and all that.

As I’m immunosuppressed and there is no mask wearing on public transport I’m unable to use it to travel to work.

What did you do before 2020?

I wore one for eight hours a day working on a supermarket checkout. Every single day I left work with a sore throat. I would lose my mind if we were forced to wear masks again.

Just say "no". It's a powerful word. If you mean it.

And yeah it might be funny to others but I'm sat waiting for 111, emailing haematology and waiting for people to call back so I can hopefully get an infusion
I have no fucking immune system and I'm really annoyed that I've kept myself ok for so long

Sorry to hear this

Incredulous others thought it was something to mock @JoyBeorge Confused

We’ve been wearing masks since the outset. Never had Covid up to now.

I have only ever worn a mask when forced to by law, and never tested positive for covid either, despite always testing when showing symptoms.

I'm not sure anyone should be making personal health decisions on either of our anecdotes.

I wasn’t immunosuppressed pre 2020, I also didn’t have neutropenia either.

I would have lost my job if I refused to wear a mask. I live in Ireland, the ridiculous Covid rules were far stricter here than in England.

You couldn't declare yourself to be in Team Exempt?

I'll bear this in mind when Mumsnet declare the EU (in its entirety) to be some kind of promised land. Which they do at least every hour!

  1. No "they" don't.
  2. Mumsnet is not a hive mind.

What does this thread show? Other than the fact that most people are over their obsession with Covid? That mask wearers don’t actually know how masks work. To feel so strongly that you want everyone else to do it, yet you don’t know how the thing works. The irony.

echt · 29/12/2022 01:16

So how do masks work? Go on, tell the mask wearers what they evidently don't know.

It seems to me that there are also posters who regularly pop up on covid threads endlessly commenting on what other people choose to do..

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/12/2022 01:18

YABU.

We in the UK are currently living with the unintended consequences of the measures we took during the early stages of the pandemic. It does look (to me, at least) as if the reduced exposure to the normal circulating viruses has affected our immune systems, reducing it's ability to deal with the normal ebb and flow of illness. Covid is now largely controlled by vaccination.

I believe any benefit to a vaccinated population of wearing masks is minimal, and greatly outweighed by the disadvantages that are now becoming apparent.

China has low vaccination rates, which is why they are now struggling.

WuTangGran · 29/12/2022 01:18

sst1234 · 29/12/2022 00:58

You know that’s not how masks work, right? And how do you know you haven’t had Covid? Do you test every day.

No matter how much of a denialist you are, my comment stands.

Not up to mildest scrutiny, it doesn’t. Read it back. It’s just silly.

Looking at some of your other comments on this thread, you seem unnaturally preoccupied with other people’s behaviour.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 29/12/2022 01:25

I was vaccinated and wearing a mask as was compulsory at work and in shops and my son was wearing them at school and following social distancing and I still managed to catch covid so not convinced the masks do much of anything. Bloody hate wearing them especially when its warm. It also really hinders communication with those who have learning or hearing difficulties that rely on expression and lip reading. YABU.

PlusLaMeme · 29/12/2022 01:28

No. Absolutely not. Never again.

Mask wearing destroyed my mental health. I am claustrophobic and I couldn't bear having my mouth and nose covered, it felt like I was being choked. I coped by basically not going anywhere or doing anything. I became such a hermit that my family and close friends were worried sick about me. Even after masks were no longer mandated, it took me ages and ages to be able to go out to shops and restaurants without having an underlying dread that somebody would yell at me for being unmasked.

I will never go back to that again. If the government dares to bring that abomination back again, this time I will revolt.

Proudofitbabe · 29/12/2022 01:30

No. I'm not prepared to go through life with cloth over my nose, it's not natural. If you want to then go for it, but I'm done pandering to fretters who want their personal preference imposed on everyone else.

I take public transport to work twice weekly. I wear a mask due to people coughing open-mouthed, I hate it. I'm not really thinking about China/Covid, its just that.

CheesesandWines · 29/12/2022 01:39

You should get those shoes off your feet quick. They are not natural.

LuckyStone · 29/12/2022 01:41

No, now piss off with your covid bullshit

Jenasaurus · 29/12/2022 01:44

Am I right in thinking the person wearing the mask is protecting the non wearer from the virus? so if the non mask wearer has covid they could still infect the mask wearer, if so whats the point
