To not have taken her DD to Pizza Express?

h2Oo · 28/12/2022 19:40

As a favour for a neighbour, I was taking her DD to Pizza Express with my DD (her friend)

We were all set to go and then I couldn't find my bloody bag! Found it. Went there, went to go in and they announced they didn't have any pasta left

My friend's DD started crying and was really not happy. She said it's all pointless, and that she wants to go

So we did go. And I took them to KFC. They were happy with that

When I dropped her home, she told her mum. Next thing I know, I get a text asking why I said I'd be going Pizza express when I just went KFC? And if she'd known I was only going for fast food, she would've taken her to the cinema with the older DD (I did this as a favour so she could spend some time with her older DD for her birthday)

AIBU to be upset? Not even sure how to reply! I didn't and won't say her DD had a tantrum and that's why we didn't go

I don't see that pasta is much more exciting or objectively "better" than KFC, but since the pasta was no longer an option, it doesn't really matter if the pasta is heavenly and the chicken a bit blah. Possibly pasta is a bit healthier, but it's a treat. Who cares if a treat is a bit unhealthy? By definition, it's not your usual food, so you're allowed to splash out a bit with extra calories and fat.

People can be so weird!

The chicken pasta at PE has over 1000 cals and costs more that £14. no pasta on the kids menu.
A kids KFC burger has 265 cals, fries 270 cals regular gravy 60 cals and ketchup 40 cals - so 635 cals in total. It would cost approx £5]So KFC wins on 2 counts. Cost and nutritional content.

Was she upset that she didn't know where her child was? She might have trauma in her background about child safety.

Does she take your children sometimes? If she's regularly babysitting and cooking them nutritionally balanced meals and you never reciprocate, I can see why she'd be annoyed.

Otherwise a very odd way to react to you doing her a favour.

I didn't want to grass on a 6 year old and start moaning that we had to go elsewhere because she was upset Blush

WTF? Grass on a 6yr old? Just tell the truth like a grown up.

EthicalNonMahogany · 28/12/2022 22:41

on another matter -do you all really think P Express is fast food on the same level as KFC? Pizza express children's menu has salad, you can buy vegetables to go with your dough, tomato and cheese, they serve decent food sitting at tables with cutlery, g
fruit juices, it is no more fast food than most restaurants?? KFC is brown fried crap, I've never taken my kids there. PE is at least a proto-restaurant experience.

The mum is this thread is batshit but, while she is rude and awful, I agree with her underlying perspective that if you think your child is going to pizza express you might think "oh no!" if they went to KFC instead.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 28/12/2022 22:42

Isn’t the point of going to Pizza Express to get pizza? Misses the point of the thread lol

healthadvice123 · 28/12/2022 22:25

@melj1213 really they had enough pasta just until op found her bag then ran out , half the menu is pasta so pretty sure time they got there didn't matter too much

I think the point was @healthadvice123 that, as they arrived at Pizza Express, there was an announcement made that there was no more pasta, so presumably if they had arrived 10/20/30 minutes earlier then there would still have been pasta available and therefore the delay is relevant.

If the chef has 100 portions of pasta and 100 pasta orders have been taken then the 101st person to ask will be told "sorry, no pasta", even if there is pasta physically leaving the kitchen at the time ... So in this scenario, if the OP had arrived earlier they may have been order 91, but due to the delay they were 101.

healthadvice123 · 28/12/2022 22:44

@melj1213 but they didn't and no guarantee they would of had enough even then , its not the OP fault , things happen and mostly pizza express doesn't run out
Maybe if the traffic lights hadn't of been red they would of made it in time etc etc , stupid to blame the OP

healthadvice123 · 28/12/2022 22:47

@EthicalNonMahogany its still not good for you food as such
Salt , fat etc so nutritionally prob not loads better
Yes you sit at a table with a knife and form
You can get corn in kfc if you want to add veg and its one off, yes not on same par as kfc but its not way up either
The point is if someone does you a favour you say thanks

This makes you sound like a 6 year old yourself.

I wouldn't have thought the child would to get into a huge amount of trouble with the mum for having forced the plan change. You should have just told her the facts calmly, and as events happened, not worrying about "grassing up a 6 year old".

EthicalNonMahogany · 28/12/2022 22:52

Didn't say it was good for you - just more like a normal restaurant than fast food. Corn isn't a green vegetable! You can get all sorts of salad at PE and pizza with vegetables. Cheese and dough are salty but not inherently as bad for you as deep fried battery chicken is.

I also understand the point of this thread cheers, that's why I said the mum was rude.

EthicalNonMahogany · 28/12/2022 22:54

and olives and sun dried tomatoes and things... generally more like the kind of adult food I'd want to give my kid as a treat vs KFC. But I will stop now as I didn't realise I felt so strongly about the virtues of Pizza Express haha

Op was told this and so followed advice. She then got a shitty message back saying the op was blaming her daughter! Read through the thread before trying to sound like you're taking a higher ground.

Starseeking · 28/12/2022 23:01

Just got to the end of the thread @Sometimeswinning, and the reply from the mum has been deleted, so I have no idea what it said, other than that it seems to have been a rude response.

I stand by my initial comment that that is exactly what the the OP should have done (and sounds like she subsequently did) despite the rudeness that came back.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/12/2022 23:09

On the slight tangent the thread has gone on...pizza express is way way better quality food than kfc. I'm really surprised some people think they're comparable. KFC is crap food, fried in copious amount of fat, very yummy. Pizza express kids meals are vegetables, then pizza or pasta baked in an oven. Worlds apart nutritionally to kfc.

Whilst i am on the ops side because it was nice to leave pe simply because of the dd friend: if I was the other mum, and before I'd heard why (which I would have found out first!), I would also be miffed at kfc when I thought pe, as by 6 my dc weren't allowed kfc/mcds etc

Schnooze · 28/12/2022 23:14

Well it will save you money in the long run as you won’t be taking her anywhere again.

The other Mum wasn't moaning about nutritional content (not that a Pizza place is healthy!), she was annoyed her youngest DD didn't get a big 'treat' because she wanted to spend time taking her oldest DD to the cinema without her and now she couldn't cope with her youngest DD possibly moaning instead of telling her (in age appropriate terms) that she got to spend time with her friend, it was HER fault they didn't eat there and she should stop being an ungrateful madam. Although given the other Mum's response I can see where she gets her attitude from.

"I did you a favour by babsitting, and now I am being criticised for still taking your child out for food after they had a tantrum that the pasta wasnt available? Noted."

I noticed that too, possibly too identifying and the neighbour may recognise her text in tomorrows Daily Mail :)

Amber245 · 28/12/2022 23:41

I had a weird situ where I babysat for a friend in an emergency situation. Kid suddenly got mega upset at dinner and wanted mummy. Cried and ran into the garden barefoot (it was summer). He hurt his foot. I brought him in, sorted his injury, calmed him down, he ate dinner.

Didn’t want mum to feel bad that he has been upset about missing her etc so I just said, he had gone into the garden and I didn’t realise he had no shoes on.

His mum has been funny with me ever since and not brought him round again. Might be a coincidence, but she seemed pretty upset about (very minor) foot injury.

I would definitely be honest. I’ve learnt this from my experience.

bluebeardswife7 · 28/12/2022 23:58

I know it's not the point but how can PE run out of pasta? It's not a delicacy only available in selected regions. It's available all over the place for little expense. All it would take would be a little initiative from staff and bingo! They would be cooking with gas.

FedUpWithEverything123 · 29/12/2022 00:05

Why did you need to mention your lost bag in your original post? Is it relevant?

Because it is a fast turnover high volume venue. All of their stock is sent from central supplies, pre made and then re-heated.

Their head chef will be in charge of stock and if their P&L says that they have 80 portions but they sell 120 portions and their petty cash is down then MAJOR questions will be asked.

We had this issue at my last pub. I had people yelling at me that chicken isnt hard to find so why TF have we run out. I had to explain that we had run out of the chicken supplied from our one named supplier, prepped for the way it was cooked and we didnt have the authority to simply take cash out of the till and buy more.

You eat at mass produced cheap shit places, this is what you get.
