Teenagers outfits!!!

So am I being unreasonable to be sick to the back teeth of my 14 year old outfit choices now. Just spoke to her after she has been to town with her friend to buy 'an outfit'. Asked her please buy something appropriate for the weather she also knows I don't like stuff too revealing anyways she has been and bought some £30 nike pro shorts and a hoodie. I'm pissed. I was supposed to take her trusted her on her own and this is what she buys? All the time we are arguing over her outfits she wears sports bras as tops and always has tiny short, tiny crop tops on and big lashes. I'm sick of it I feel like she has no respect for herself and really don't understand why she always wants to have so much on show. I think she's too young and it also sends out the wrong message. My stepfather actually said to my mum after we had been for a visit last week that he didn't even feel like speaking to her as he didn't know wear to look and felt quite uncomfortable. I try and explain its not good to dress this way all the time but get nowhere. AIBU to feel quite upset and stressed over this situation?

It doesn't matter how big someone's boobs are - a crop top is outerwear.

Plenty of people i know would say a crop top has never been outerwear!

It's not the 14yo's fault that normal clothes make some people uncomfortable.

Her step dad needs to get a bloody grip and stop sexualising her.

He isn’t sexualising her, he is being made to feel uncomfortable in his own home (your argument seems to be in someone’s own home they can wear what they like but that’s not the case here)

What did you wear as a teenager?! A furry onesie all the time?! 🙄

This made me laugh because this is essentially what my DD (16) lives in when she's in the house because she's "cold"... She then changes into her crop top and leggings to go out in -1 temperatures 🤷‍♀️🤣

This is normal for many teens. Mine is 15 and is currently wearing the Nike pro shorts and a juicy hoody, fake tan, fake nails and fake lashes. She’s also just grabbed the heated blanket and snuggled up to watch a movie. I’d have much more issue with your step dad than your daughter. They’re finding they’re way and they’re own style, you will push her away if you carry on this battle.

All of this. From another mum of a teen girl.

I can categorically say I have never ever felt uncomfortable speaking to a child wearing little clothing

Me neither

Me neither

Well his pants aren’t ‘clinging to his testicle’ in your little tale 🤭 I’m not clinging to anything, your outlook is repressed, if my FIL wanted to strut naked I genuinely wouldn’t care, equally they have never ever made a comment on what their granddaughters are wearing.

Oh don’t be so ridiculous, if he strutted round naked you’d be on here complaining that it wasn’t appropriate in front of your daughter and he must be getting a kick out of it.

such double standards on here.

Teenagers HAVEN’T always worn very revealing clothing, no matter what some of you try to make out. Did you see what we wore in the 80s in our mid teens?! 😆

the 90s was quite good for teens. Grunge was good for being a bit rebellious but it wasn’t about showing as much surface area of your body as possible.

I had to look up what Nike pros were and nearly fell off my chair laughing when pictures of what looks like trunks from the men’s underwear department came up. I mean, if they think they look good in that then that’s up to them but I’d just be laughing inside thinking “what are you wearing your dad’s trunks for?”

MilkyYay · 28/12/2022 19:27

The worst thing about the crop top and shorts fashion is the number of fat teens pouring out of them. Cringe.

I was a teen in the late 90s and I wore cropped tops and rolled my school skirt up as short as it would go. As did all my friends.

This, i am constantly laughing at the chunky teens swanning around looking like they borrowed dad's boxers

Don’t presume what I’d do/say, it only makes you look extremely foolish. I’d be worried about him because it would be out of character but if he said he’d decided to embrace naturism I’d be fine with it and ask my daughter how she felt, I wouldn’t force her to go and see him naked but neither would I think he was getting a kick out of anything. Try harder next time sweets

thelobsterquadrille · 28/12/2022 19:30

@ClaretBarret if he's uncomfortable because his step daughter is wearing normal, outdoor clothes, that's his problem, not hers.

Women and girls shouldn't have to cover themselves up because men are made uncomfortable by their clothing choices.

Again, how would he cope at a gym, the beach or the pool?

cheninblanc · 28/12/2022 19:30

Pick your battles, the fashion will change by spring and she'll be into something else. Let her find her style and be one of the crowd it's harmless

Ds(18) girlfriend comes to our house in those tiny shorts and a big gents nike hoodie.

Not having girls at home myself, first time I told her she must be bloody freezing (Scotland, it was 3 degrees out!). She didnt even have socks on to keep her feet warm 🤣.

Your step dad is creepy, she is a 14 year old child ffs. Dh doesn't even blink when ds brings his gf(18) home, he just sees a young girl the same age as his son, not a sex object.

I’m sure teens would be lining up for your sartorial tips and ‘zingy’ one liners, ‘dad trunks’ what a BURN 🤣

This thread just massively highlights the mysoginistic views ingrained in society and the stupidity of society too.

For all those clutching their pearls and insisting the 14 year old is in the wrong and not the poor old stepdad who couldn't possibly just look at her face, are you all purposely being fucking stupid?!

You cannot compare a 14 year old following fashion to an adult wearing underwear. No one is sexualising the adult but the 14 year old is very much being sexualised because the Stepdad feels uncomfortable and cant help but look at her, but sure blame the girl.

Would it still be her fault if she got sexually assaulted by him or anyone else?

Try fucking calling out this pervy and sexist behaviour than continually telling a teenage they are asking for whatever happens to them because of how they dress.

No one moderates their boys behaviours and how they dress or their attitudes to teen girls, maybe put the effort into that as opposed to berating a teen girl all the time and making her responsible for the actions of adult men.

refuge123 · 28/12/2022 19:34

@whatwhataboutsecondbreakfast @sssd @ssusiesuelou if she cant make appropriate decisions about what to wear then she shouldnt be in charge of it and chosing for her is the only way to deal with it if she cant be sensible. Its december and winter, she shouldnt be wearing next to nothing. Are you seriously advocating for that? 4 year olds have their parents chose their outfit for them for the same reason - because that cant make sensible decisions. I would give a choice of material, colour, pattern etc and set a price range but summer clothes in winter is a no go.

But it's apparently a huge problem with men so therefore it must be the girls fault .

My mother had this attitude towards teen attire and expression when I was growing up. That’s why she has zero relationships with her grandchildren. Her misogynistic and outdated views on body positivity are not welcome in my house.

He happens to be a man, I’d also be uncomfortable and am with a similarly aged teen relative who dresses similarly and often has a nip slip due to how tight and low the crop tops are.

Are you always this much of a cunt?
