DH says this is gross

Bownus · 11/11/2022 17:27

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

Whereas the scissors do not get washed after use and in fact have been washed only once or twice ever.

Well of course people who use them for food wash them every time.

How do you heathens spatchcock chickens? <gets the vapours>

mynameiscalypso · 11/11/2022 18:00

I'm #teamscissors too. I use them for so much in the kitchen, including cutting pizza. I always wash them between uses and don't see how it's any different to a knife. I also have separate scissors for eg wrapping presents.

OutDamnedSpot · 11/11/2022 18:00

My answer to that is no, but I do wash cutlery after use. Whereas the scissors do not get washed after use and in fact have been washed only once or twice ever.

See, to me, that’s seriously weird. My scissors get washed at least as often (probably more?) as other utensils.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/11/2022 18:01

#TeamScissors too

Screw you non-scissors people.

Chloefairydust · 11/11/2022 18:01

I said you are being unreasonable for using scissors to cut the pizza… it is gross, you should use a pizza slice.

Once on a caravan family holiday my DB used the caravan sissors to cut a pizza, I refused to eat it 🤢 … caravan scissors, like can you imagine, the previous guests of the caravan might have used them to trim their pubes or something 😱🤢

I do have special poultry shears for this 👩🏼‍🍳

God your DH would hate us - pizza usually whipped out of oven and goes onto top of cardboard box it came in and we cut it up with scissors and eat straight from there 😂 so unsanitary I can’t believe we haven’t died yet.

But I need to know, do you cut up before or after cooking?? Some people seem to be implying they are cutting up a frozen pizza pre cooking??

darisdet · 11/11/2022 18:04

We have kitchen scissors that go in the dishwasher so the hygiene part wouldn't be an issue. Though I've never attempted to cut a pizza with scissors!

ABJ100 · 11/11/2022 18:04

I'm with your dh. Disgusting.

Happyunhappy · 11/11/2022 18:05

OP-what do you mean by is washing utensils before use a thing? You wash them after use, the same as cutlery so they're clean in the drawer, ready for the next use.
I say drawer but maybe you keep yours in one of those utensil pots which get nice and dusty. Don't point that out to your dh though! LOL!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2022 18:05

OhmygodDont · 11/11/2022 17:50

You don’t cut pizza with scissors that’s the weird part.

Don't knock it till you've tried it!
My kitchen scissors go in the dishwasher after use. I've got 2 large and 2 small pairs. I became a convert to them when DD was a clingy baby, scissors allowed me to do so much more one-handed than using knives.

After cooking!

but I have seen pizza in M&S that is pre cut so you get two slices each of three kinds with different toppings

Yes I obv am not that foul that I don’t wash utensils after use. Someone was saying that they would wash the scissors after getting them out the drawer!

I'm 100% with you OP. Scissors to cut pizza for the exact reason you say (can cut directly on to a plate and save using a chopping board!)

MN is just to weird about this stuff. What an Earth is knocking about in people's utensil drawers that their utensils need washing before use?

Butchyrestingface · 11/11/2022 18:07

"Vile", eh? He's wasted in your kitchen. He should be on Mumsnet.

do you wash knives, forks and spoons that have been in a drawer before you use them?

My answer to that is no, but I do wash cutlery after use. Whereas the scissors do not get washed after use and in fact have been washed only once or twice ever.

Don’t be dense. If op is using scissors to cut pizza she is obviously washing them after each use

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 11/11/2022 18:08

You can’t use a pizza cutter to cut a pizza on a plate! The plate is too small for the whole pizza how would you do it?

What size pizza/plates please?

bellac11 · 11/11/2022 18:09

ReneBumsWombats · 11/11/2022 17:40

People cut pizza with scissors??

Nothing about it bothers me hygiene-wise but...scissors?

Pizza cutters exist for a reason!

My OH does this, and it drives me mad. Because its just 'wrong'.

And he cuts up mushrooms with scissors too.

CatsAreCrackers · 11/11/2022 18:10

OP, I do exactly as you do, use the scissors to cut the plastic and then use to cut the pizza as I don't have a pizza cutter... Didn't know it was weird! The scissors are clean before I use them and I wash them after. What on earth is the problem?!

Dguu6u · 11/11/2022 18:10

Yes that's horrible. Also there might be bits of plastic stuck to it. Yuck. Just give it a wash.

Fairislefandango · 11/11/2022 18:10

If the scissors were just from the drawer and not cleaned first it is bit gross.

I generally wash my kitchen scissors after use, before putting them back in the drawer, because they are kitchen scissors and used mostly on food (including pizza) and food packaging. But I certainly wouldn't be that fussed if they hadn't been washed after use on packaging tbh. Scissors are by far the best way to cut pizzas. Pizza cutters are crap unless the pizza is on a large, completely flat board.

mam0918 · 11/11/2022 18:11

YABU to use sissors to cut pizza, thats psychothatic lol.

If it was a knife though then YANBU, I dont care if its touched the plastic or not.

Then again Im wierd with shit like this, I will happily drink out of cans/bottles regardless of people saying 'but rats could have peed on it in storage' but Im really fussy about making sure my fork looks really clean (and regularly have to swap it in a resteraunt) lol.

We all have wierd quirks.

I’d rather not cook pizza at all tbh
