DH says this is gross

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

A couple of things. It just seems weird to use scissors to cut food; you use knives and cutters for that. Never occurred to me to use scissors for it. Also, I make my own pizza and what with the cheese and the toppings, I'm not sure I could cut it with scissors. I think everything would slide around. I have a pizza cutter.

I don't think there's anything unhygienic about it, assuming you haven't been cutting raw meat with the scissors or something, but it just seems so odd. Scissors are for cutting paper or sellotape, not food!

You do know they sell kitchen scissors for this purpose, you sometimes get them with the knife set in the blocks with the block.
Im assuming they’re not the same ones for the sellotape and glitter

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/11/2022 18:22

I would do that. Anyone who hasn't cut up pizza with scissors should try it.

ReneBumsWombats · 11/11/2022 18:22

How is it more efficient than sliding the pizza off the tray and on to a breadboard, and then just running the pizza cutter over it?

I can't see this working on home made pizza with fresh ingredients. It'll just make a mess.

Scissors? To cut pizza? I can't get over this. I wouldn't chop spinach or slice mushrooms with scissors either!

How often do you wash the rack? Also what pizzas are you cooking because a good dough even frozen base will just seep though a wire rack.

Very rarely wash it, probably once in so many years we might put it in the dishwasher

Only ever had one problem with the base going floppy through the rack.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 11/11/2022 18:23

How does that work, cutting slices of hot pizza with scissors? How do you hold the pizza to cut it? You can just cut pizza on a flat surface using a pizza cutter but I don't see how it's easier to use scissors, wouldn't you burn the hand that holds the pizza whilst it's being cut? Or do you wait till the pizza's cold before cutting it?

TheOrigRights · 11/11/2022 18:23

If any life risking lurgy lives on that pizza after you've cooked it at 220C then you'll probably be up for the Nobel Prize in discovering thermo-resistant organisms.

If you have raw chicken on your pizza and then lick the scissors you might want to exercise caution.

I don't hold the pizza. I put it on the plate and then just cut it with the scissors with one hand.

If the scissors were just from the drawer and not cleaned first it is bit gross. Less so the plastic connection. But I really don't like pizza being cut with scissors. It gives me the heebies 🤢

What? You re-wash your kitchen things right before using them, even though they were washed and put in the drawer after they were last used ( which was probably only the previous day anyway!)

Donttalkimcounting · 11/11/2022 18:25

But you were more than likely about to cook it at 200 degrees for 20-30 minutes, no?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/11/2022 18:25

I grip the dry edge of the crust with my left hand and snip with the right.

OhmygodDont · 11/11/2022 18:26

I feel also like scissors will be wonky slices. I can’t deal with that.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/11/2022 18:26

Microplastics, dummy

They'll be on the pizza anyway.

But surely she's cutting the pizza after cooking it. not before!

ShiningStarQueen · 11/11/2022 18:28

Never thought about it really. I guess you could say there’s a small chance that another shopper could have touched a tiny bit of the plastic through the cardboard whilst the pizza was in the chiller cabinet in the supermarket 🤷‍♀️ It’s not something that’s ever crossed my mind though tbh and i’m sure the heat in the oven killed any germs.

ReneBumsWombats · 11/11/2022 18:28

How is it better than just cutting the pizza flat?

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 11/11/2022 18:28

mynameiscalypso · 11/11/2022 18:24

I don't hold the pizza. I put it on the plate and then just cut it with the scissors with one hand.

I'm so cack-handed arthritic I would manage to both burn myself and make a pig's ear of it.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/11/2022 18:29

Aprilx · 11/11/2022 17:57

do you wash knives, forks and spoons that have been in a drawer before you use them?

My answer to that is no, but I do wash cutlery after use. Whereas the scissors do not get washed after use and in fact have been washed only once or twice ever.

Well that’s your mistake then because o jtt it at pop my scissors in the dishwasher after I’ve used them on food (pizza, bacon, other stuff) so problem solved. I’m assuming the op didn’t lick the scissors clean last time she used them on a pizza.

anyway, that’s not the issue. The dh thought cutting packaging then food with the sage utensil was gross. Not scissors per se

YellowMeeple · 11/11/2022 18:29

For all the doubters- my pizza scissor cutting is performed post cooking, while still hot, on both shop bought and home made pizzas using kitchen scissors which are washed after use, like our pizza cutter, which DH occasionally prefers.

Pizza sits on plate, like a previous poster I lift the edge slightly at the crust with my left hand and cut towards the middle.

Windtunnel · 11/11/2022 18:29

My MIL uses scissors, tried it once, meh.
I do bleach my pizza before eating it though for hygiene reasons. Just a quick squirt.

Clymene · 11/11/2022 18:30

ReneBumsWombats · 11/11/2022 18:28

How is it better than just cutting the pizza flat?

Because it stops the topping dragging across the pizza and saves on washing up (you can cut it on the plate)

ScarierThanBoo · 11/11/2022 18:31

What you did was normal ish, apart from using a scissors to cut pizza, isn't that a nightmare?
I am now going to have nightmares forever about the hundreds of pop cans I haven't wiped down before drinking from 😥

Clymene · 11/11/2022 18:30

The top doesn't drag when you have a good sharp cutter, though. It cuts right through cleanly. How does it save on washing up?
