DH says this is gross

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

The level of concern about cleanliness of utensils on this thread is a bit worrying. I couldn’t live with someone who had to wash kitchen scissors after opening a carton of package with them.

I wouldn't wash either scissors or knives after using them to open a package - quick rinse they got eg a bit of milk on. The point is that the same hygiene standards apply to both.

Still alive 48 hours later.

Used my kitchen scissors today to snip sausage links apart, trim rind off some sliced ham and hack into said ham and sausage packets.

I do think they need a proper wash after being used to cut meat, especially raw meat.

Yes I'm a bit shocked at the number of people who aren't cleaning them after cutting meat

And yet, we are all still here.

Pizza wheel goes into the dishwasher and is sterilized.

Kitchen scissors have a larger joint that is harder to clean.

That same scissor joint is right next to the food, while the pizza cutter wheel joint is smaller, easier to clean, and is further away from the food.

My scissors come apart into 2 for easy cleaning

BoiledorMashed · 14/11/2022 07:04

Using scissors? why not, I see it as thinking outside the box (forgive the pun) and unconventional. This over obsessive attitude towards hygiene and 'germs' is why we're a nation of softies and snivellers and why the NHS and GPs are overwhelmed. You go girl. PS why not not see if DH can haul his ass in to the kitchen and cut his own pizza next time.

Katemax82 · 14/11/2022 10:10

It's not gross. Unless your worried about every little germ that exists. I've even eaten a sweet pastry that I dropped on the pavement and ran over with my daughters pram. I didn't get sick

LionelMessy · 14/11/2022 21:40

Hold on - people cut pizza with Scissors?
Don't you have a knife 🤷

Fairislefandango · 14/11/2022 21:41

I have lots of knives. Scissors work better. Doyou have scissors? Grin

FancyFanny · 14/11/2022 22:11

What do people think kitchen scissors are for if not for using on food?

I have used them for pizza- easier than a knife but I do find a pizza wheel works better.

I use mine for all sorts of other things too- cutting the rind off bacon, cutting meat into strips or cubes, de-skinning sausages, cutting up herbs, cutting holes in the top of pies before baking, and of course opening packets, cutting foil and baking paper etc.

I just wash them I would a knife in hot soapy water after using.

stuntbubbles · 14/11/2022 22:17

@FancyFanny There’s a load on this thread who haven’t even heard of food scissors! They’ve been questioning the OP like she’s using child safety scissors from the craft cupboard with bits of poster paint and Play-Doh on.

I did once have to use a rolling pin from my children’s play-doh set on some pastry. My toddler had taken my kitchen rolling pin and I couldn’t find it. I did feel it was a low point in my life. 😂

Why would I do it with a knife when scissors work 100 times better?

You are going to cook the pizza (at like 240 degrees) before you eat it aren't you?

The scissors are used once it's cooked.

Vaccine001 · 16/11/2022 09:57

Is he a shower twice a day nutter too? 😂

ReneBumsWombats · 16/11/2022 20:12

Ok, I did pizza for the kids tonight and tried cutting it with scissors...

...and it was fucking awful. I don't know how so many of you get it to work. It was frozen pizza, not home made, so the base was quite firm (but it was fine, as frozen pizza goes...I had some). I had to handle hot pizza to lift it a little to get the scissors in place. The blades pulled cheese down into the cut, the base was firm and almost cracked, I had to run my hand right along the cut edges and I had to turn the pizza round and cut again from the opposite side to stop it cracking and stop tearing the cut with my hand along it's edges. Edges were jagged and looked terrible. When I finally finished cutting it in half, I got the pizza wheel out for the rest. Zip zip zip, clean cut, hand nowhere near, job done.

Maybe scissors would work better on my home made pizza with a softer base, but they were awful on this one. Maybe there's a skill to it but why bother learning it when I don't have to?

Cutter all the way. That was terrible. Sorry.

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/11/2022 23:26

Sounds to me as though your scissors are not very good.

Sounds to me as though your scissors are not very good.

They're just ordinary kitchen scissors and they do the job for everything else just fine.

This is obviously a thing since it works so well for many other people, but it doesn't work for me at all. Awful. But it's OK. I've got my cutter.

PicturesOfDogs · 11/11/2022 17:41

How dirty is your drawer that you need to disinfect the appliances first? 🤣

I think it’s just that a lot of people don’t have scissors that they use as culinary knives. I don’t, so any scissors in my house may have been used to cut plant stems, paper, gluey creations by DCs, etc, and they wouldn’t necessarily be thoroughly washed in between these jobs. It would be weird turn to use them on food without a decent scrub. But sure, if you have scissors specifically for food prep you wouldn’t need to wash them before use as they would presumably be kept as one would keep knives.

Well they are obviously not fine or you wouldn't have had such a job cutting a pizza with them

They cut cartons, packaging, paper, cardboard, thin plastic, foam etc just fine. They're sharp. They're less than a year old.

But when cutting pizza, they pull cheese down into the cut and it's totally impractical with my hand in the way etc etc. Just hated it. Cutter was perfect. It's designed for the job, after all.
