DH says this is gross

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

If my other half knew some of the things I did to prepare dinner (not to mention the sell by dates) he wouldn't eat it!

if he doesn't like it then he should cook😂😁😁😁

Really? How can he know he doesn't like it if you don't tell him?

belles001 · 13/11/2022 01:07

Scissors for pizza = tops idea.

Pizza cutters are for wimps.

Phlipit · 13/11/2022 04:36

Pretty sure whatever germs were on the plastic will be killed in the oven. But recontaminated when u cut the pizza. Oh well. You’ll live and if you don’t u won’t make that mistake again

gregaliara · 13/11/2022 05:38

As an Environmental Health Officer (retired)( I designed Food Safety Systems including Food Safety audit systems for Pub Hospitals and Aged Care ) I regard this as Very low risk, especially if you pulled the pizza from a v/hot oven. It is a major sanitising step if the pizza was heated at oven temperatures. Then eaten. I have seen/heard far more over the top HYGIENE ISSUES being spoken of than this one, some quite hilarious. Here's ONE "You know those lights in the supermarket fridges and freezers, what effect does it have on the food, has anyone checked if it is safe ?"

CatsnCoffee · 13/11/2022 07:02

This post seems to have morphed into one about the use of scissors v a pizza cutter. I’m with scissors. Much easier, less messy and probably safer!
Also, some people have missed the point. It’s not about the cleansiness of the scissors; assuming they were clean to start with. It’s whether they were contaminated by the plastic wrapping which had been exposed to other customers’/shop staff’s handling before OP bought the pizza. Her DH suggested that this was the case and so the scissors shouldn’t then have touched the food.

Witsendwilly · 13/11/2022 07:34

We have scissors in the kitchen.

they get used for opening stuff, cutting wrapping paper, cutting raw chicken breast into cubes, cutting beef, cutting dead heads of plants, cutting the stalks on flowers…….. and cutting pizza…………BEFORE it’s cooked.

Way less mess than a pizza cutter and much easier. Especially for the big rectangular pizzas if you only want to cook some of it.

There isn’t a utensil or surface in the kitchen that would cause you any harm if you licked it unless your kitchen is a total bomb site.

People get way too wound up about hygiene. I guess some of the posters on here won’t use a plastic fork for a takeaway if it comes out of those random Tupperware boxes people all just plunge their hands into. The same people who can’t do buffets or carvery’s.

Life is too short

The rest of the world uses scissors but congratulations on your unique contribution to the thread after 18 pages.

Kronus · 13/11/2022 09:48

do you sit there on the side and snipe at everyone!
Its' an opinion, luvy, take a moment!

primeoflife · 13/11/2022 10:18

@zingally after a huge thread on here about kitchen 'hacks' (hate that word!) I attempted cutting a pizza with scissors. Just didn't work for me, don't know why 🤷🏼‍♀️.

We have a stone we cook pizza on and it's generally homemade so I just cut directly on that with my pizza wheel.

anneofgreengablz · 12/11/2022 21:08

I wash my scissors in between uses, so no problem there, but cutting a pizza with scissors is just wrong. How hard is it to wash a cutting board?

What, in your opinion, makes it wrong?

SpringIntoChaos · 13/11/2022 11:07

I've always done this...your DH is very weird!!

Posters saying 'get a pizza cutter'...why? Scissors are so much more efficient!!!

Berlinlover · 13/11/2022 11:09

takealettermsjones · 11/11/2022 17:32

I mean technically he's right but... I can't live my life like that. I don't wash the tops of drinks cans either. 😱

People actually wash the tops of drink cans?

Saffroned · 13/11/2022 11:10

Some of the fancy ones have tin foil over so you don't have to

DenaJT · 13/11/2022 11:15

As long as the scissors have been suitably washed and sanitised, there's no issue. I'm a technical manager in a company that maintains catering equipment and I see much stranger things!

I don’t anyway.

Hmm1234 · 12/11/2022 21:28

You’re weird and gross for using scissors what’s wrong with a kitchen knife? bet you didn’t even wipe them down after

What's wrong with scissors?

stuntbubbles · 13/11/2022 11:20

Berlinlover · 13/11/2022 11:16

I don’t anyway.

I simply gargle with bleach before I consume anything.

Saffroned · 13/11/2022 11:29

Berlinlover · 13/11/2022 11:16

No nor me but if someone did then these might also appeal. I think it's to stop cats peeing on them

countrygirl99 · 13/11/2022 11:34

Am I the only person who uses a knife to cut a pizza?

EvaAmi · 13/11/2022 11:38

With your dh here, rather use a knife if you don’t have a pizza cutter, the knife is more likely to have been just washed than scissors would be, let alone the random amount of things scissors are used to cut!

What else would kitchen scissors for food be used to cut?

EvaAmi · 13/11/2022 11:56

My so-called kitchen scissors never end up as being used solely for food related items, someone always comes along and uses it for everything but! I wouldn’t go mental about it, but I’m just saying a knife could’ve been used..

Well you could just tear it up with your hands as well. Scissors are perfectly ok for pizza cutting. I couldn't use a knife

BobOfBonsall · 13/11/2022 12:58

I served in the Army through the 1970s and cooked food for myself and colleagues many times when on exercise.
Often, basic household hygiene precautions were impracticable, yet we not only survived, but food poisoning was unheard of.
If the food is going to be cooked immediately and eaten once cooked, the harmful bacteria will not have a chance to multiply and cause problems.
