To be gobsmacked for being told off for picking up after my dog??

WhatJustHappened321 · 31/10/2022 17:27

So this happened today. Out walking my dog, minding my own business. He decides he needs a poo so I stand next to him rifling in my pocket for a poo bag. A woman comes out of her house and walks towards her car. Stops dead in her tracks and glares at me. I say tentatively... hello? She says 'I would like to know what you're doing?' I reply.. well I'm just about to clean up after my dog. She replies'well I should think so!!' I was.. like.. well yep.. there you go! That's what I'm doing 🤷‍♀️She then says... don't even THINK about putting it in my bin!! I said I have absolutely no intention of putting it in your bin.. I have my own bin thanks!! Turning to pick up his poo.. she carries on. I can't believe you're just standing there, waiting for him to finish!! I snapped at this point and said what the hell is wrong with you?? What do you want me to do drag him down the street mid poo?? She then got in her car and shot off at about 60 mph! I mean come on! I've heard of dog owners being told off for leaving their dogs mess... but I still can't get my head around this!!! ( btw he is a very small dog and his poo is like raisins! I always pick up, even I think no one would even notice it.) AIBU to think the woman was absolutely crackers??

@namechange085

Your comment about how tiny the dog poo is shows you may just not bother sometimes

I have clearly stated that I do bother. Every single time.

Why mention how small it is then?

WhatJustHappened321 · 04/11/2022 16:42

Merely to confirm that even though I often have to step over massive dog poos outside my own front gate that any owner could not possibly have missed, I always clear up, even though my dogs poo could probably lie there in a bush as unnoticed as say a rabbit poo... Is that clear enough for you?

@namechange085, I fantasise about putting the Tory front bench up against a wall and pelting them with rotten eggs, obviously I’d never do it.

Just eggs?

I admire your restraint.

Fortunately we don’t organise society around sights some people might find offensive. If your sensibilities are so delicate just look the other way.

Sure thing! I’ll just get my kids to do it outside your house … but it’s ok. I’ll clean it up! Acceptable. ☺️

I thought I might get banned if I said what I really want to do to them.

Don't get me started.

I imagine it's a little more 'hands on' than voting them out of office.

Interested to know if you have the same view on cats, who can roam into people’s back gardens and crap anywhere they like, with no owner in sight to pick it up. If anyone ranted at their owners like they do at dog owners, who actually do pick the crap up most of the time, they would be told to bugger off as it’s an animal and can’t be made to do things on command.

LolaSmiles · 04/11/2022 21:28

Dog owner who lets their dog shit everywhere by any chance? 😂

No. Pick up after mine.

I just find it hilarious that someone stating a poo is small can possibly be considered a sign they don't pick up after their dog. Even by Mumsnet that's a good one.

The standing by tutting but not wanting an argument either is also quite funny, because people who do that sort of thing (on dog poo or anything else they want to make their views passive aggressively known), are exactly the type of people who come over all emotional if someone asks what on earth they're doing. They definitely weren't looking for conflict of course 🙄😂

Before I had a dog I (no idea why) thought you could train a dog to go in a specific place and if I saw a dog in the street “randomly”pooing I probably would have done a very passive aggressive tut.

You actually can, but it takes some work.

Hilarious 😂🙄

If you have the thought process it's only small no one will notice then you are much more likely to leave it. Not saying you are just that your more likely.

It's funny how not one MNs on here leaves dog poo but the streets regularly have it.

Not funny at all. there's possibly ( i haven't counted ) 10/20 posters on here compared to the hundreds of people who might live in a town or city.

And just for the record you don't see a lot of dog poo on the streets around here.

But that's the second 'clever' statement you've made since the " you've said the poos are small therefore shows you might not pick them up " 😁 clanger. 👌

Mine poo mountains of the stuff, and I have to use 2 bags sometimes, but I still think it's an odd jump for you to make.

It's funny how not one MNs on here leaves dog poo but the streets regularly have it.

It's really not that confusing.

There's an estimated 10 - 13 million pet dogs in the UK, depending on which source you use. There's not 10-13 million dogs worth of dog poo on the street.

A handful of owners are on Mumsnet.

You seem remarkably keen to suggest people don't pick up after their dogs.

Annemaria · 05/11/2022 09:23

Have you thought why people might only “ tut” disapprovingly at irresponsible dog owners? Because the burly pit bull terrier owner might verbally abuse you ( as has happened to me) or put a brick through your window. Yours, frail old Mumsie.

The poster tutting didn't mention anything about put bull terriers.

They just want to stand and tut to make sure dog owners know they don't like the fact a dog has done a poo. It's passive aggressive and odd.

And let's be real in general the sort of people who want to stand and tut at someone getting on with the perfectly legal act of walking their dog because they apparently don't want conflict (😂) probably wouldn't do it to someone they believed would verbally abuse them or put their windows through. They do it to the people who will probably say nothing, and then go home and laugh about the weird person who stopped and watched their dog have a poo.

In your case, the dog walker was out of order verbally abusing you. Though why you'd stand and tut at someone with a burly pit bull is beyond me

They didn't say stand and tut. Tutting is an expression of annoyance when you know you can't say anything to someone for whatever reason. It's often done without the other person seeing or hearing. People can tut if they want like dogs can apparently do their business anywhere.

God Alive. A dog pooing on the pavement ( ordinary) v a child pooing on the pavement ( batshit ).

We're talking about animals kept as pets NOT ACTUAL HUMAN LEARNING HOW TO BEHAVE CHILDREN. That wouldn't be OK at all.

But crack on if you think it's comparable. It just makes you sound stupid tbh.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/11/2022 12:39

We all already know SOME people don't pick up after their dogs. That doesn't mean everyone who owns a dog is guilty of it.

Just like SOME people are dangerous drivers. Does that make every car owner guilty of it?

LolaSmiles · 05/11/2022 14:13

Because I remarkable number don't

Nobody has disputed that some owners don't.
But there's 10-13 million dogs in the UK and some posters seem to find it hard to believe that a handful of dog owners on Mumsnet might just pick up after their dogs.

If a remarkable number of dog owners didn't pick up the poo of over 10 million dogs, we'd have a fairly substantial problem on our hands that's more than the occasional annoyance caused by the minority who don't pick up.

Tutting is an expression of annoyance when you know you can't say anything to someone for whatever reason.
So either sat something or don't.

Tutting is a ridiculous behaviour because it screams that the person absolutely wants to make a point whilst pretending they wouldn't dream of seeking confrontation. It's passive aggressive and totally pointless.

I think we are over analysing tutting here. I've just seen someone do it because they dropped something. It's just a common mannerism for some people 🙄

Anyway my main point was it felt like someone was being completely torn apart because they walked out of their house to someone's dog doing it's business outside. By the sounds of it her reaction sounds like she has a similar problem to my area (shit everywhere) so probably did over react to the OP. But I can understand sometimes people just have had enough and she was probably just having a bad day.

I definitely wouldn't like to walk out to it. Not much you can do I suppose.

sunglassesonthetable · 05/11/2022 16:04

Yep we all understand that.
You've taken quite a few silly throwaway posts to get to that .

dawngreen · 05/11/2022 16:17

Dog owners who get abuse when they always pick up and take home will maybe be less likely to pick up.

Dog licences only harm the dog owners who don't break the law. It never worked the first time.

Some people let their dogs stray to do their business. And some just walk with them off the lead, and don't care.

As a dog owner I am sick of getting idiots coming up yelling abuse. Its better to wait until my dog has done the deed to pick up. So the offending item only is in one place.

Sick of walking past discarded drinks/food/glass/nappies.

LolaSmiles · 05/11/2022 16:20

You're right, and a silly one at that.

Either it's something that matters, so say something.
Or it doesn't matter, so say and do nothing.

Be it dogs having a poo, or a parent parenting differently, or someone being a bit noisy in a restaurant, or whatever the situation is, tutting is silly.

Tutting as a common mannerism is something done by a certain type of person who wouldn't dream of openly telling strangers what they think because obviously they would hate anyone to think they were looking for drama, but for some bizarre reason, despite claiming they hate confrontation, feel the need to be passive aggressive about something.

Remember this post if you ever tut or sign at something. But this is Mumsnet so I'm sure you never have and never will.
