To be gobsmacked for being told off for picking up after my dog??

So this happened today. Out walking my dog, minding my own business. He decides he needs a poo so I stand next to him rifling in my pocket for a poo bag. A woman comes out of her house and walks towards her car. Stops dead in her tracks and glares at me. I say tentatively... hello? She says 'I would like to know what you're doing?' I reply.. well I'm just about to clean up after my dog. She replies'well I should think so!!' I was.. like.. well yep.. there you go! That's what I'm doing 🤷‍♀️She then says... don't even THINK about putting it in my bin!! I said I have absolutely no intention of putting it in your bin.. I have my own bin thanks!! Turning to pick up his poo.. she carries on. I can't believe you're just standing there, waiting for him to finish!! I snapped at this point and said what the hell is wrong with you?? What do you want me to do drag him down the street mid poo?? She then got in her car and shot off at about 60 mph! I mean come on! I've heard of dog owners being told off for leaving their dogs mess... but I still can't get my head around this!!! ( btw he is a very small dog and his poo is like raisins! I always pick up, even I think no one would even notice it.) AIBU to think the woman was absolutely crackers??

Wouldn't fancy walking my dog in the woods at night.

You can’t control when a dog wants to poo. My dog poos in the garden and then in the park or wherever we walk. My neighbour’s dog refuses to poo in his own garden, so you can’t control a dog to that extent. Personally, I wish humans wouldn’t do their business in public toilets and make them smell for the people who use them next but hey!

Annemaria · 02/11/2022 09:32

Perhaps it depends which area of Paris you live in. In the parks there are dog wardens who fine anyone who lets their dog deposit faeces. I’m so pleased some posters agree with me. And to snipe at little children is base.

Was your dog pooing on her garden? Some people get very uppity about that, I know I had someone down the road from us come raging out after my dog cocked it's leg on her bush- not an awful lot you can do besides pick up any mess, nothing worse than seeing a dog being dragged off somewhere mid-poo...

Yes.. my dog was cocking her leg* against a wall walking past a house and the house owner shot out and told us off. She was a JRT (my dog) so we are not talking great floods of pee and she was only reacting to another dog having peed there. I wouldn’t think of telling someone off for doing this.

*Yes she was female and yes she did cock her leg. Perhaps she identified as male.

Sorry - that was in response to @KimberleyClark

Emotionalsupportviper · 02/11/2022 10:40

As long as she isn't peeing above the damp course they have no cause to complain .

If a dog is fed quality food there won’t be any “remnants”. We also have rain in this country which will wash away dirt, usually to the side of the road/pavement. I wash my dog’s paws after walking and always remove my shoes at the door. I don’t let visitors wear shoes in my home. There will always be dirt of some kind on anyone’s footwear, dog owner or not.

It’s really disingenuous to suggest that, as pavements are dirty anyway, a bit of dog poo doesn’t really matter. I’m pretty sure everyone would much rather just have the general dirt minus the dog poo.

The only time I ever feel revolted by dirt on a pavement, and feel it’s something I really want to avoid, it’s animal poo.

WatchoRulo · 02/11/2022 13:59

I would have told the interfering batshit person that it's unwise to argue with someone who has easy access to fresh supply of dogshit.

We're talking about the OUTSIDE here. Where people stand and walk and all the rest of grubby modern life.

No one 'wants' dog poo and by and large most dog gets picked up except by unreasonable, irresponsible owners. No one is suggesting that 'a bit of dog poo' is Ok just that in the context of an outside road, it is a necessary evil of living in a world inhabited by humans AND their animals.

That is why we have door steps and door mats and cloths and boot scrappers and soap and slippers. To keep the outside, outside.

She then says... don't even THINK about putting it in my bin!!

How would she have known? do people check what's in their bins on the offchance that some random has slung in their dogshit?

I used to live in a house where we had a bin out the front, but we had to leave the rubbish in black bags on the pavement on collection day. It was very annoying when people slung their dog poo in there, as I then had to fish the bag out from the bottom to add into my black bag (which I had usually already tied up and had to untie).

To be honest it is pretty repulsive seeing a dog shitting on the pavement, where people walk. Can't you take the dog to a woodland or your back garden?

If as a human if you’ve got to go you’ve got to go, this is an animal. How do you suggest I stop my dog toileting when I walk her to the vets tomorrow? From my home to the vets is one mile in a relatively built up area, btw she’s got diarrhoea which is why I’m taking her.

KimberleyClark · 02/11/2022 16:56

I'd prefer it if dogs didn't crap in the middle of the payment etc, but the OP says their dog went towards the side, and also that they attempted to pick it all up. Probably all we can reasonably ask for, really. All dog shit will leave a trace, but I don't think we can ask dog walkers to carry bags and cleaning products to scrub the pavements...!

when looking after DB’s lab I take kitchen roll and a spray bottle but even so I can never eliminate all traces of the poo especially when it’s a bit soft.

KenickiesHickey · 02/11/2022 17:14

This has reminded me of a call I received when I used to work in a police control room. A woman called to report a dog walker who deposited her dog’s bagged poop in her wheelie bin that was kerbside ready for bin day. I told her it wasn’t a police matter.

Yeah - tell him.

"Go on - make my day. Do you feel lucky, punk?"

😂

Emotionalsupportviper · 02/11/2022 18:39

I imagine that rough sleepers (of which there is a steadily increasing number) also defecate in the streets.

As do drunks.

If I am unfortunate to step in anything unpleasant, I'd rather it was canine than human.

Nobody’s suggesting dog poo is ok to be left there, though. They’re saying that the fact that some poo might briefly have made contact with the pavement before being picked up doesn’t suddenly make the street exponentially more gross than it would otherwise have been, when it’s already likely to be covered in dirt and germs from all
over the place, traces of urine and faeces from other wild animals and birds, and all the rest of the stuff that regularly makes contact with pavements and other outdoor surfaces.

Wtf???

So you'd rather people didn't use toilets to ... do what toilets are designed for. I've heard it all now! Confused

Maybe instead of male/female/unisex we should have piss/poo/both cubicle options?

I always have visions of hooking one of the handles over their tail!

@sueelleker my dog is the meekest dog in the world but I wouldn't have a cat in hells chance of doing that 🤣🤣

If o was wearing a hood I may have chucked the poo bag in her garden. Just for the shits and giggles 🤣

Lifeisapeach · 04/11/2022 11:30

I totally agree ! I wouldn’t have liked to come out my house and see that. Can’t you train your dog to go somewhere less offensive? Your own street or a dog park or something? Not everyone wants to see that!!
