To think that something has to be done about the immigration crisis?

But I don't know what? More than 900 people landed in Dover today, as I discovered when reading about the terrible petrol bomb attack on a detention centre. Detention centres overcrowded, more than 7 million pounds a day being spent on hotel rooms for illegal immigrants, horrendously slow processing of applications...people drowning in the channel and local people feeling angry and frustrated because of the strain on services. Not to mention the mental health toll on people living their lives in limbo! So what is the answer? Because I just don't know anymore but it feels like the system has completely broken down.

Illegal immigrants or asylum seekers?

Yanbu

Never mind immigration, the world's population needs to be cut down considerably.

Illegal immigrants or asylum seekers?

I’m 99% sure the op refers to illegal immigrants. The legal asylum seekers come here through legal methods. Arriving on dinghys supplied by criminal gangs is not legal.

BashfulClam · 30/10/2022 19:39

Illegal immigrants are not in hotels since they are here illegally and don’t want to be detected. Ffs learn the difference before spewing bigotry.

CaronPoivre · 30/10/2022 19:41

You’re absolutely right. We desperately need to encourage immigration to fill essential roles and help bring our country level with other European nations again.

Illegal immigrants or asylum seekers?

Presumably OP doesn't have insider knowledge as to how many have claimed asylum! Everyone who arrives undocumented by small boat is an illegal entrant. Whether they claim asylum or not is another matter, but either way they have to be detained or housed somewhere.

Of course they are. They enter illegally then are housed, usually in hotels.

And this is why we can’t have a discussion about it. Because people get accused of being bigots. Have you been to the Kent towns recently? Have you looked at Kent county councils budget position with unaccompanied children?

They’re housed if they claim asylum

and therefore are asylum seekers

not illegal immigrants

This is going to be an ignorant twat bingo thread

FrownedUpon · 30/10/2022 19:42

An asylum seeker walked into a woman’s home in Dover last week. He demanded money, to use her phone and to be driven to Manchester. Locals have been told to keep their doors locked. It’s crazy.

Wrong. Even once they've been detected they're still here illegally.

InMySpareTime · 30/10/2022 19:43

@HelloMrBond there are no legal methods for asylum seekers to arrive in the UK.
If the government actually wanted to stop migration via small boats they could provide a legal way for asylum seekers to apply for UK asylum from their home countries.

JudesBiggestFan · 30/10/2022 19:43

@BashfulClam what are you on about? The people who come on boats then claim asylum? They have arrived via illegal routes. But even if my terminology is wrong, nothing I've said is hateful...you can't think this system is working for anyone, surely? I'm literally as guardian reading wokerati as you can get but if we can't discuss reasonable solutions/suggestions then you just leave it to the right to fill the gap.

What route would that be? Unfortunately our government has tried to close all routes but international law does not detail which routes asylum seekers must use. All people arriving across the channel are legally claiming asylum. Most asylum claims are upheld.
If they cared for these poor people, they would co-operate with France and build an asylum processing centre and safe haven near Calais.

StoneofDestiny · 30/10/2022 19:45

Obviously we need to speed up the processing of genuine asylum seekers and allow them to contribute productively to society. We need to work with other countries to share intelligence to root out illegal migrants who have no genuine reason to be in the UK. We also need to step up surveillance and share information on groups and individuals who pose a threat to the safety of people seeking refuge in the UK.
We need to scrap the abhorrent Rwanda project and get the money already paid to them back to help resolve immediate issues in this country.

Everything you’ve said is hate filled.
They are not using illegal routes. Asylum routes aren’t signposted. They are arriving to claim asylum.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 30/10/2022 19:46

I read an article recently about the number of immigrant children who just disappear.... into whose hands and for what I dread to think!!

BashfulClam · 30/10/2022 19:46

Once they claim asylum they are asylum seekers no matter how they fled came here. Until that status is decided they are here legally seeking refuge. If they then abscond or come in undetected they are here illegally. Calling them ‘illegal immigrants’ is ignorant.

That's what happens when you make it impossible to legally claim asylum in the UK unless you are physically in the UK. The government could improve the situation quite easily by setting up legal channels to claim asylum from overseas, but if they did that they wouldn't be able to blame asylum seekers for all the country's problems or use them as a distraction topic whenever the going gets tough.

So would you like to post the legal methods asylum seekers can use to enter the UK then? We'll wait, it might take you a while though...

Home invasions, burglaries, threats, assaults, murders happen in every area of the UK every week sadly - the majority having nothing to do with asylum seekers.
