To think that something has to be done about the immigration crisis?

But I don't know what? More than 900 people landed in Dover today, as I discovered when reading about the terrible petrol bomb attack on a detention centre. Detention centres overcrowded, more than 7 million pounds a day being spent on hotel rooms for illegal immigrants, horrendously slow processing of applications...people drowning in the channel and local people feeling angry and frustrated because of the strain on services. Not to mention the mental health toll on people living their lives in limbo! So what is the answer? Because I just don't know anymore but it feels like the system has completely broken down.

but it was ok for the U.K. to plunder these countries of resources and qualified workers when they wanted?

Once the brexit happened talks started with countries like India re trade agreements and that includes movement of people.

Of course it was not ok, but comparing todays refugee situation with the long fallen British empire of 300+/yrs ago is a false equivalency.

The immigration debate is a brilliant example of government divide and conquer tactics.

Even if we stopped every single person entering the UK illegally there would be no material difference to the average person's life. We wouldn't suddenly all have instant access to doctors and dentists or find public services.

There's several actions the government could take if they were serious about addressing the issue. But it serves them much better to have the plebs arguing amongst themselves over how we treat some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world than it does to have us holding them to account for their ineptitude.

It also serves to show just how easily manipulated people can be. This thread was started the day before Braverman's "invasion" speech. There's barely a mention of Albanians in the first 20-25 pages, then Suella has her say and suddenly it's all about the Albanians, they're the root cause of the current crisis and everyone's a subject expert on this niche area of immigration/crime. Strange that.

Yep mostly agree with this.To a very large extent it's a diversion tactics and so many will fall for it.

The thought police won't allow the truth to be spoken I'm afraid.

I agree, it's a classic case of chickens coming home to roost.

And don't even get me started on how they treated the Windrush generation recently with all the deportations under Theresa May and Amber Rudd in the past few years, then apologising, claiming they would compensate them but not really paying out to most people.

Not only about Empire, but UK are one of the countries that has been going around encouraging wars and destabilising regimes which literally creates refugees.

Rummikub · 03/11/2022 09:23

truth Is the U.K. did take resources and people from other countries.

Look around you. How many places are named after slave traders?

Quite. and what @ExtraOnions do you mean about by people wishing to come here? Anyone? From anywhere? No criteria at all???

Seriously thought that through have you?

If you want to take many more people from war zones then surely it would be better to stay out of the EU. Let the people from the war zones have the places that those from the EU would have had? Unless you really mean we should have completely open borders?

And what about the money the country needs to pay for it all. All the support? I know some work is available and you might get your loo cleaned or coffee made more promptly but for those refugees needing medical or trauma care, English lessons, child support etc, well ... We have black hole in the finances already. Should our grandchildren pay for it so we can feel 'compassionate' now? Or what should we cut to fund it? Nurses' pay? Universal credit? Shake the magic money tree a bit harder? Tax the taxable even more?

And what about values? Many countries have much more conservative ideas about women, education, reproductive rights etc. Are you happy for large numbers of people who agree with making homosexuality illegal into the country in a rapid space of time changing voting patterns entirely in some areas? Or people who want the death penalty or FGM? Or are pro-life and want to limit abortion? How are going to assimilate the values of all these people. Are you going to suggest they are wrong and they better learn to be more like us (very imperialist of you), are you going to make them attend classes that explain that a girl in a short skirt or a woman in a swimming costume is not 'asking for it'? Or that we have free speech on religion? That there is no such thing as 'honour killing'? Or are you just going to ignore what can be a very real problem.

Immigration is a massive problem, an ethic and legal minefield and I truly do not know what the answer is. Except I do know it is not a short, glib middle class #fbpe tick list!

I think you’re raising some very good points. Immigration is a very complex issue and there needs to be a balanced conversation about it.

Regarding values - someone else on the thread said about single young men arriving that they should be let in and work as carers. But would they actually agree to work in jobs like these? Won‘t they regard is as „woman‘s work“? I honestly don’t know, but can we really just assume they‘d happily fill all the care vacancies?

Also, how might large numbers of single men from different cultures affect women here? I‘ve seen the type of classes you mentioned, where it’s being explained that women wearing short skirts/ bikinis/ walking alone at night are not „asking for it“. I‘m not saying attitudes like this don’t exist in Western countries, but I think it’s also a bit naive to assume that large groups of single young men (or people in general) from a different cultural background can be easily absorbed into a society because we need carers or fruit pickers.

Overnight another story has come to light about a coach load of AS from Manston being abandoned in London. The media has jumped on this now, I'm 15 minutes from Manston and it's heaving with press. 👏 all our hotels are full, all our emergency accommodation full to bursting. This is a friggin nightmare for the locals, east Kent is becoming the dumping ground.

In the ME, yes. Certainly not in Romania and Albania.

the figures on Peston showed that most asylum seekers come from Iran.

MissWired · 03/11/2022 09:52

They wouldn't have come here pre-1950's because most people in the UK lived hard-scrabble lives full of grinding poverty in cold slum houses, doing hard manual work for just enough to feed themselves and their kids. No benefits, no pensions, no "free" medical care, and the ever present threat of the workhouse to keep them in line.

Which is exactly what we're heading back to, at speed. ..in fact, a substantial proportion of us are already there, minus the workhouses, but those will come.

Add in the end of oil and the brutal NW European climate, and the realisation of just how few people the soil here supports, and they'll all be fucking off again when they come to realise just how much better life was back home.

Who would turn up here, of all places, unless they didn't know how deadly this place was? Mind you, half the natives don't even realise, but they will, eventually. Might take a century, might be sooner, who knows, but it will happen.

Poor sods.

It’s some good smoke and mirrors from the govt/govt led media to convince us we’d all be better off if there just weren’t all these illegal immigrants/asylum seekers/economic migrants.

Stops us dwelling on the magic tree for their DUP adventure, Brexit which is cripplingly expensive, shitty deals for mates on PPE etc. during Covid and the cost to the country of Liz and Kwasi’s ‘mini-budget to tank the economy’.

but yeah, let’s blame the furriners. It’s the British way. I remember my parents ranting about the Asians coming over in millions, 50 in a house together and taking the jobs. Then it was Eastern Europeans, undercutting us, taking our jobs. Now it’s immigrants from anywhere. The only common denominator is ourselves.

if the same thing keeps happening, and the only constant is you, it means you are the problem. Little England doesn’t want immigrants. Remove all the fluff around who, where from, age, race, sex and it all comes down to ‘not British’.

vile country, I cannot wait to leave.
