To hate fireworks and those who set them off

I had just gotten my two year old who is a very bad sleeper and is sleep regressing down and suddenly very loud fireworks start which of course wakes her up.

I am so tired I am ready to cry.

9.30 on a Monday night, it’s not Mardi Gras! Surely they have jobs to go to in the morning.

Also, I don’t have one but I feel sorry for the dogs as well, the fireworks must scare them!

Anyway writing that down made me feel better.

No, it's Diwali.

Hope your little one settles again soon.

edwinbear · 24/10/2022 22:13

It’s Diwali, that’s why, we’ve got them flying about our way too. YANBU though.

TeefAsseblief · 24/10/2022 22:13

YANBU.
I agree with you.

Sallyh87 · 24/10/2022 22:15

Oh, I am ignorant and didn’t know that! Okay that is more reasonable.

Toddler back asleep, I have calmed down. And will be reading up on festivals.

Happy Diwali.

I'm sorry you don't like fireworks. I love them. And it's Diwali. Loads of lights and bangs in my area of London.

pippy1958 · 24/10/2022 22:17

Totally agree with you - if they have to have them (and they are really are unsustainable so why bother) - they should have silent ones! Our cats are terrified and I feel it massively inappropriate when there is a war raging in Europe, imagine how you’d feel to escape conflict to find people let off terrifying noises for fun 😫

BMW6 · 24/10/2022 22:18

Tons of fireworks around here, hopefully will end around 11pm as its a school day tomorrow.

Another load on Nov 5th, hey ho. Dog hates them but has not been quite so freaked out this year.

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 24/10/2022 22:18

Yes they are complete knob heads

Faircastle · 24/10/2022 22:18

Now that you're feeling a bit calmer, is it too soon to point out that Mardi Gras would be a Tuesday? 😉

I think the difficulty with this time of year is that Diwali fireworks can seem to merge into Guy Fawkes fireworks, and if everyone chooses a different night to set them off then it can seem a bit relentless.

Do you think it's appropriate to set them off after midnight day after day?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/10/2022 22:20

Sorry, night after night that should read.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/10/2022 22:21

Diwali today.

Then probably at the weekend for Halloween(I've seen stuff advertised for this...)
Then through the week for Bonfire night.

Hopefully over with by the 6th. Until Christmas.

Yes we were just saying that 5 nights of fireworks for Diwali starting today and then it will probably be another week of bonfire night fireworks, which start the weekend before the 5th and carry on to the weekend after as well ime. That will make it about 2 full weeks non-stop!

Scaryhairylairymary · 24/10/2022 22:35

Download a white noise app on your phone ?

Elphame · 24/10/2022 22:39

My dogs are barking at them right now. Another 2 weeks of this at least.

Hate the things.

user1471457751 · 24/10/2022 22:41

@pippy1958 I'm pretty sure Ukrainians are familiar with fireworks. No need to be offended on their behalf.

declutteringmymind · 24/10/2022 22:42

YANBU

We did ours today @7:15pm tonight as it's a school night.

heartbroken22 · 24/10/2022 22:46

I'd be happily woken up by them in the morning but not at night.

pantsville · 24/10/2022 22:48

I wish people who did them would also go round picking up the debris in the morning as well, our previous neighbourhood was terrible for fireworks and always looked like a shithole with firework bits left everywhere this time of year. I suppose the people who set them off just turned a blind eye to all the litter they left as it never got cleared up.

PeloFondo · 24/10/2022 22:49

Hate them.
Had one put through my window, cost me loads to repair the damage
The kids around here don't care, they threw one in a car with a baby, one in the nursing home window; they fire them at police
I never used to mind them but I'm terrified of them now. The cat doesn't care about them but I'm scared of him being hurt too

PonyPatter44 · 24/10/2022 22:51

I discovered tonight how many of my neighbours celebrate Diwali! Its been great, I have been able to sit in my living room and watch loads of fireworks. Even the cats have been watching the lights.

Abouttimemum · 24/10/2022 22:51

There’s absolutely no need to be setting them off at 10.50pm though, no matter what you’re celebrating.

Personally I think they should be banned for home use, or banned after 9pm. Or earlier ha.

And I love fireworks, we’re off to Alton towers for the fireworks next week. It’s just another excuse to be anti social for some people though.

EnalaGoya · 24/10/2022 22:52

I love fireworks 🎆 glad you're feeling a bit calmer OP

Branster · 24/10/2022 22:53

Fireworks are horrible and pointless.
I don't see the point unless they create an amazing visual display and are part of one big far away outdoor show. Not in everyone's back garden and local park.
It amazes me how insensitive people are. The noise upsets evening routines for little ones, terrifies a lot of pets, livestock and wildlife. And yes, strangely enough, if you've ever heard gunfire in a crisis situation, fireworks are not exactly a soothing sound.

I really wish they were banned.
