To hate fireworks and those who set them off

Sallyh87 · 24/10/2022 22:10

I had just gotten my two year old who is a very bad sleeper and is sleep regressing down and suddenly very loud fireworks start which of course wakes her up.

I am so tired I am ready to cry.

9.30 on a Monday night, it’s not Mardi Gras! Surely they have jobs to go to in the morning.

Also, I don’t have one but I feel sorry for the dogs as well, the fireworks must scare them!

Anyway writing that down made me feel better.

I dislike them a lot more now that I used to. Having them going off until 11pm isn’t great when you’ve got 2 DC under 2.

I am not sure a blanket ban is the way to go as this would probably just encourage illegal activity.

I would like to see some kind of legislation brought in that limits the amount of days they can be used and limits their usage to people who have a licence. I have seen so many unsafe practices when they are set off in people's homes, often by someone whom has consumed alcohol.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/10/2022 08:15

I do agree that dog owners (a large majority of them) have absolutely no conception and certainly no consideration that not everyone loves dogs and wants them everywhere they go: work, shops, restaurants, everywhere.

I don’t mind dogs and I certainly don’t like to think of them being scared. But I don’t want one sniffing up me when I’m in a shop, barking while I’m making a work call in the office, jumping up in the park, or sitting up on their owners lap next to me in a cafe, all of which has happened to me in the last week. The lack of consideration goes both ways.

Wow, just wow. What a way to show compassion to someone who revealed a traumatic childhood experience, which explains their position on dogs.

Shame on you. Shame on you.

Ok, so a dog chased you, fine.

And what have horses done to you? They suffer too, do they deserve it?

Fairislefandango · 25/10/2022 08:18

I love fireworks. I've always had dogs and cats and none of them have ever been bothered by them, but I realise that some are. I do agree that limiting firework sales to public displays would be a good idea (mostly from a safety pov).

I agree that things shouldn't be banned just because some people don't ike them, but steps can be taken to reduce the impact, such as limit to official displays.

Not going to engage with someone who makes such mockery of something as serious as two children being chased by a dog and the dog lunging at and attacking one of us. Your attitude is disgusting and you should be ashamed.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 25/10/2022 08:21

Don't then. I'll manage.

Brefugee · 25/10/2022 08:24

OP is allowed to feel stressed that her child who isn’t the best sleeper has been woken up by fireworks when she feels on the verge of tears herself as she’s so tired.

OP also came back when it was explained about Diwali and wished people happy Diwali, so posters painting her as the grumpy posessor of a PFB should do one.

There are many and various reasons, not least my ex-colleagues with PTSD, that fireworks should be a) only used by licensed people and b) silent. Both these things are possible.

gogohmm · 25/10/2022 09:17

To those who smugly are saying their dogs aren't frightened by fireworks, mine wasn't either until he developed a disability I suppose, like arthritis, and he's now afraid of his own shadow.

Having legislation that bans fireworks after a certain time of day and only allows them on certain dates in private settings would be an appropriate option - outside of those dates you would need a licence (eg for outdoor concerts)

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 25/10/2022 09:37

There's legislation around already that bans kids buying fireworks, but they still get them and cause all sorts of damage. They're basically bombs and they cause fires, distress and litter, to people, animals and the environment. But we have to endure them because people think they look pretty. Let those people pay for all the damage they cause and see how much they still want them! Does anyone who's been burned by them or had their property damaged, had their hay store or stables burned down or sat up with their terrified dogs/cats/children/veterans want them? Do the nurses and doctors in A&E want them? I don't care what fucking 'celebration' people are marking they're unnecessary and absolutely should be banned.

What’s that got to do with the OP though?

Seeing this loads on mn lately. Post starts and then there are random comments that have zero to do with the actual OP.

Just stop it. You don’t have to respond to every post 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

OneTC · 25/10/2022 10:20

I love fireworks and by obvious extension, I also love the people that set them off.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 25/10/2022 10:23

YANBU. They are so anti social. And the harm they do to pets, wildlife and the environment is awful. Imagine being allowed to sell explosives legally - it's madness.

LeevMarie · 25/10/2022 10:30

I hate them and the associated disruption they cause, but wouldn't care as much if they were used appropriately. I was woken up by some asshole last night setting them off just before 12am. I don't care if it's Diwali or the second coming of Christ - if you do that, you're an antisocial d**k.

I don’t actually want dogs banned, although I do want them banned from shops and restaurants. There’s no
place for animals in places like that.

I was simply making the point that we can’t simply ban things just because we have an issue with it.

You said you didn’t want dogs to be allowed outside. Confused

To compare banning fireworks with living creatures is ridiculous.

If you want dogs banned from shops and restaurants, that’s valid for many reasons. Campaign for that. But that’s no reason to allow fireworks which scare and cause injury and death to so many people and animals, put pressure on health services and damage the environment. It’s like you want to keep them as a punishment to the animals you don’t like, which is ridiculous.

Thanks for the thread police input @Suzi888

I was responding to all the dog owners calling for consideration, and pointing out that most dog owners are just as inconsiderate. I hope that clears that up for you.

SimonaRazowska · 25/10/2022 11:11

Ah ok so it’s karma for dog owners in your view

i guess that’s an opinion

Hellsmovie · 25/10/2022 11:15

Yabu

Hellsmovie · 25/10/2022 11:18

Fire works are only a mild irritation a few months a year. Some dog owners are an irritant all year

So? It’s the dogs that are distressed and shaking, not the irresponsible owners. Seems fair. 🙄

pippy1958 · 25/10/2022 11:38

I mentioned that as a friend said it reminded her of when she was a child growing up around bombings and air attacks, which is why she doesn't like them. Sometimes, however much some people like something, the greater good might have to come into account. If people considered other people, and weren't so selfish, the world might be a better place - and then we can celebrate with silent fireworks, and collect all the rubbish afterwards!

RovenderKitt · 25/10/2022 11:42

They should be banned except for organised displays imo.

NippyWoowoo · 25/10/2022 12:54

Sallyh87 · 24/10/2022 22:15

Oh, I am ignorant and didn’t know that! Okay that is more reasonable.

Toddler back asleep, I have calmed down. And will be reading up on festivals.

Happy Diwali.

We get these threads every year on divali 🙄

Dogs probably put more pressure on health services and emergency services through bites, disease and attacks than fireworks.

I walk down a forest path every day that a dog owner lets their pretty big (never seen it but it's obvious) dog crap right in the middle of the path. It's disgusting and anti social. But I'm not calling for a dog ban.

There are just as many inconsiderate dog owners as firework users. Two wrongs don't make a right. But I get a bit bored of "the whole world has to act in a certain way because of my dog".

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 25/10/2022 13:38

Dogs probably put more pressure on health services and emergency services through bites, disease and attacks than fireworks.

While bites do happen, on balance dogs are much more beneficial for the health of people and so for the NHS. Dog owners are healthier because they are out walking and exercising the dogs and there is evidence that dogs are beneficial for your mental well-being.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 25/10/2022 13:41

Don't forget the service dogs, assistance and hearing and therapy dogs whose services are invaluable for many.

I don't think fireworks can assist in all those ways.
