To hate fireworks and those who set them off

I had just gotten my two year old who is a very bad sleeper and is sleep regressing down and suddenly very loud fireworks start which of course wakes her up.

I am so tired I am ready to cry.

9.30 on a Monday night, it’s not Mardi Gras! Surely they have jobs to go to in the morning.

Also, I don’t have one but I feel sorry for the dogs as well, the fireworks must scare them!

Anyway writing that down made me feel better.

As a veteran I fucking hate them. A few years back random ones being let off had me cowering in the (empty) bathtub. I can handle them at a display because I know they're coming but random ones like tonight really trigger my brain and make me want to make myself as small as possible.

DancingInHisShirt · 24/10/2022 22:54

I hate them and wish they would be banned. Our dogs are very unsettled. A friend of mine who has rescue horses has been staying late with them every night for the last week or so due to fireworks, playing music to them to try to keep them calm. 😔

Suzi888 · 24/10/2022 22:55

With all the cost of living issues where on earth does the money come from, they’re ridiculously expensive for about two minutes of noise and light.

Silent here- thank God.

AdobeWanKenobi · 24/10/2022 22:55

Tell me about it. Scared the cat so much it knocked over the Christmas tree.

gogohmm · 24/10/2022 22:59

Its Diwali! Of course there's fireworks

Cuddlywuddlies · 24/10/2022 23:01

Comr and live in Ireland @Sallyh87 they are illegal here, you need to apply for a licence to have them. So no random fireworks 🙌

CheezePleeze · 24/10/2022 23:03

Fireworks are still going strong here and have been all weekend.

My cat and one of my dogs are fine with them, my other dog is petrified.

They've still got Guy Fawkes night and NYE to get through yet.

Still happen illegally in some places though...

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 24/10/2022 23:08

All of the fireworks have now stopped where I live! Hope they have stopped 4 u OP!

Applesandcarrots · 24/10/2022 23:12

Love fireworks but I swear they are getting louder!
I saw silent ones not so long ago. Fascinating.
There should be sound limit on them.

Ludo19 · 24/10/2022 23:18

I think it should be public displays only and silent. Sick of arseholes setting them off randomly on the run up to bonfire night and New Year.

Oh God, that must be so horrible for you.

You clearly don’t live in Dublin, they’ve been going off here for weeks.

The world doesn't stop because you have a child that doesn't sleep. Also, it's Diwali so there are going to be fireworks.

There’s lots of reasons why many people want fireworks banning, not just kids sleep patterns. They frighten a lot of people, wildlife and pets, they damage the environment and here they add to the pressure the NHS is already under treating injuries. They cause burns and scars and kill people and animals. I don’t care if it’s for Diwali, new year or someone’s 40th, I think they should be banned.

SquishySquashySquishmallow · 24/10/2022 23:43

Wrongly got my hopes up they’d finally stopped just now and let dog out who hasn’t wee’d since 3pm as she’s so scared.
They’d started here before it had even got dark and still going strong so she just ran back in. Will wait another half an hour and try again.

Poor girl. We put puppy pads down in the evening at this time of year for one of ours as she won’t go out. 😔

No shit Sherlock.

If only countless other posters had mentioned it's Diwali...

Snoozer11 · 24/10/2022 23:50

Some fireworks spooked a dog near mine and she slipped the lead. Her family have been looking for her all night.

They're awful and pointless.

sweetkitty · 24/10/2022 23:50

Absolutely loathe them. I will be spending the 5th November on the couch TV turned up, with a shaking, panting terrified dog. Last year my arsehole neighbours decided to let off fireworks next to our rabbit shed, had to bring in the bunnies before they died of fright.

One night would be ok but a fortnight before and after the 5th why? And they cost a fortune where do people get the money from?

Yea but the op takes about her kid not sleeping

user1471457751 · 24/10/2022 23:51

There are lots of good reasons why fireworks should be restricted to official displays at certain times only but messing up a child's routine isn't one of them. You shouldn't expect the whole world to center on your child.

XanaduKira · 24/10/2022 23:53

I love fireworks 💥

I once met someone who worked on the buses in Dublin. He said that it wasn't unheard of for yobs to launch fireworks in their direction. Problem is that it's so easy to smuggle them in from the UK.

AloysiusBear · 24/10/2022 23:55

Im always surprised people can hear them so loudly indoors. We have normal double glazed windows and inside with windows closed fireworks've never once woken either of my kids or scared my pets.
