To hate fireworks and those who set them off

I had just gotten my two year old who is a very bad sleeper and is sleep regressing down and suddenly very loud fireworks start which of course wakes her up.

I am so tired I am ready to cry.

9.30 on a Monday night, it’s not Mardi Gras! Surely they have jobs to go to in the morning.

Also, I don’t have one but I feel sorry for the dogs as well, the fireworks must scare them!

Anyway writing that down made me feel better.

@pippy1958 I'm pretty sure Ukrainians are familiar with fireworks. No need to be offended on their behalf.

No, my guest got her 2yo daughter down fine, but has herself been up and down herself ever since. She’s had several cups of tea and is teary and anxious.

In Ukraine after the Russian invasion of Crimea and the Donbas in 2014, hardly anyone had fireworks for a good few years, and they weren’t still setting them off at midnight 😡

FreezyFreezy · 24/10/2022 23:51

Yea but the op takes about her kid not sleeping

And she says she feels for dogs.

OP is allowed to feel stressed that her child who isn’t the best sleeper has been woken up by fireworks when she feels on the verge of tears herself as she’s so tired.

CheezePleeze · 24/10/2022 23:57

And they cost a fortune where do people get the money from?

What a strange question Confused😂

I do think they should be for organised displays only though.

OoooSweetChildOMine · 24/10/2022 23:57

It's Diwali.

Im always surprised people can hear them so loudly indoors. We have normal double glazed windows and inside with windows closed fireworks've never once woken either of my kids or scared my pets.

Of course you still have to make sure that your pets are indoors when they go off, which is why they should be restricted to advertised events so that you know when to make arrangements for animals.

Oooh is it? 😯😯😁

It's Diwali.

And? Does that make the fireworks less frightening for animals than the new year ones? Or do the ones for Diwali ones not cause injury?

needabreak5 · 25/10/2022 00:06

I think it’s fine to make allowances for nights like tonight, 5th November and NYE. We celebrate Diwali so did a few small ones in the garden, a bit later than we would have liked, hopefully our neighbours don’t hate us! But when it seems to go on for weeks it is annoying, yes!

Babyroobs · 25/10/2022 00:06

Absolutely detest them especially the loud ones. Why do most of them need to sound like mortar bombs. Apparently for Diwali they are allowed to be let off until 1am which is ridiculous on a weeknight. My dog is petrified and has spent hours clawing my legs and arms, he will not leave my side, it is exhausting and horrible to watch.

My pet is indoors, I have washing machine and tumble drier going at the same time, music playing through the PC and he is still petrified. Dogs have very sensitive hearing I think, they certainly seem to be able to hear sounds that i often can't.

SquishySquashySquishmallow · 25/10/2022 00:20

Still going on here! Please, please stop so can I let the dog out and go to bed 🙏🏼

Glitteratitar · 25/10/2022 00:31

pippy1958 · 24/10/2022 22:17

Totally agree with you - if they have to have them (and they are really are unsustainable so why bother) - they should have silent ones! Our cats are terrified and I feel it massively inappropriate when there is a war raging in Europe, imagine how you’d feel to escape conflict to find people let off terrifying noises for fun 😫

I mean there’s often a war somewhere, what makes a war in Europe so special…?

Glitteratitar · 25/10/2022 00:34

I am a huge fan of fireworks and love seeing them all over the London skyline.

On the other hand I hate dogs, and I assumed I can’t demand they’re banned, but seeing as there’s a trend on this thread to want to ban things people don’t like, I think dogs should not be allowed outside.

We all have our likes and dislikes, can’t make everyone happy.

It’s not just dogs. It’s all wildlife. And farmed animals. Is it ok that they’re frightened? Does your happiness depend on fireworks?

Dogs frighten me, and I’m not a fan of animals or wildlife. My happiness depends on not seeing them around. Why does my happiness and mental health not matter? Why is that ok?

GuyMontag · 25/10/2022 00:43

Dogs make loads more noise than fireworks all day every day. At least fireworks don't shit on your lawn.

LoveMyCats1 · 25/10/2022 00:45

Yabu it's Diwali. My dogs aren't scared of fireworks and my child never was either it's not all kids and pets. We love them in this house. Hope you're baby settles for you.

Let’s also not forget the wildlife that is attacked and killed by dogs. I know of 3 different dogs who have killed sheep whilst out on walks… That’s excluding animals like squirrels, etc.

Peggle2507 · 25/10/2022 00:52

I can't wait until they are banned. I wouldn't mind if it was one night a year. But it starts 2 weeks before bonfire night, then there's Diwali, then new years eve. They are noisy, cause awful pollution, and take a lot of resources to produce.
I also wonder if all those people complaining about COL and energy bills will also be the same people spending a fortune on fireworks this year...

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 25/10/2022 00:53

I love fireworks and always get a small garden set for my DC’s on bonfire night after we have been to a big display. I wish they would make them silent though

Unfortunately the world would be fucked without some animals/wildlife existing unless you have no knowledge of nature, ecosystems etc.

You can campaign to ban dogs if you wish. Do you do that?

Are you vegan? Or do you want animals to exist for you to eat? Are the farmed type ok? Is it ok that they’re frightened just because you don’t like them.

How about children with sensory issues and autism? War veterans? Elderly people that are frightened and care homes that have to have staff sitting with patients?

Its one thing to argue against animals existing, although the world wouldn’t really work without some, it’s quite another to argue for fireworks, unless you’re saying that you need a few fireworks each day to keep you happy? Which I’m guessing you’re not saying.

BobbysGirly · 25/10/2022 00:55

YANBU. Diwali is the festival of light. There’s no need for the loud explosions every minute, every night for the week leading up to the festival. After Diwali we then have to suffer random explosions for the week leading up to bonfire night, plus the week after.

My dog isn’t bothered by fireworks. He’s been well socialised for all events. My dad, who served in the war, is terrified! My daughter puts her horses into their stables on Nov 5th because we all know what’s going to happen.

For those who think fireworks are marvellous and have no consideration for livestock, how long do you think livestock should be locked away for you and your little darlings to have your 5 mins of fun?? Should it be for one night only or are you one of many who think it’s fine for fireworks to be let off at random times - because it’s near the date of bonfire night/Diwali?

Did you ever consider the terrified livestock, who have no choice than to cower hearing the explosions of fireworks? Did you ever consider the trauma of livestock as they try to flee the noise and explosions - sometimes, resulting in agonising death.

If you have never given a thought to the agony of fireworks to livestock, wildlife and sealife please consider them this year.

That’ll be humans at fault though, not putting their dogs on leads. It’s always humans. We’re a bit shit as a species.

You’re missing the very obvious point that everyone has an issue with something that someone else enjoys, but we can’t all get our way. I think that point went way over your head.

Not at all. You seem to have no understanding of nature. ‘Not a fan of wildlife‘. We can’t live without it I’m afraid. 😬 We can live without fireworks. That’s the point.

If you want to campaign to ban dogs, go ahead. I love dogs but as a vegan I would welcome a world where there are no animals in captivity. We’ve probably fucked things up to much though and human wants seem to be what matters.
