There is no Chinese takeaway like a Scottish Chinese takeaway

I am visiting my in laws in Scotland and ordered a Chinese takeaway tonight (we do this every time on our visits).

Now I have travelled the world, lived in New York, Hong Kong and London and now settled in Surrey. And I have NEVER came across a Chinese meal that tastes as good as it does in Scotland.

What are they putting in the stuff? Surely I'm not being unreasonable?

You are not wrong! I’d travel there for the Chicken Maryland alone (obviously not Chinese food but so delicious and have never seen one on a menu outside Scotland)

KindergartenKop · 17/10/2022 20:21

Maybe your in laws' cooking is so bad that the Scottish Chinese takeaway tastes like a delicious reprieve?

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/10/2022 20:21

Crab Rangoons are the US Midwest’s gift to Chinese takeout cuisine, and the only other place I’ve found them on the menu was a Chinese takeaway in South Lanarkshire.

I would like to travel the world sampling their versions of Chinese food. I've had the pleasure of visiting the now-closed La Caridad 78 in NYC which was a Chino-Latino restaurant. Cuban fried pork chunks right next to wonton soup. Turns out that Havana had a very large Chinese population at one time, and delicioussness ensued.

I am yet to test it but my friend lives in Scotland now and apparently Indian takeaways also sell pizza. Whatever is going on with Scottish takeaways, I want some of it.

MarshaMelrose · 17/10/2022 20:28

My friend lives in the Netherlands. When he comes home for a few days, the first night he always has a Chinese. He says the Dutch Chinese meals are not a patch on ours. We're in England by the way.

Poppyseed14 · 17/10/2022 20:35

Northern Ireland also have lovely Chineses (and chicken maryland!). Not the same or as nice in England but I'm not sure why.

I'm American, and I developed my love for Chinese, as well as Indian food while a student in Scotland, especially when my hall of residence had "haggis night."

I have to say that, haggis aside (never acquired the taste), the food in Scotland, and in the rest of the UK, has improved immeasurably since my student days. Of course, I have more money to spend now, but still, I think UK cuisine of all types is outstanding.

Yes I'm Scottish and used to deliver Chinese meals when I was a student. Whenever I have tried Chinese food anywhere else in the world it is always a disappointment. Maybe they give us extra dollops of MSG???

Arewethebadguys · 17/10/2022 20:40

*Northern Ireland has the best Chinese food!

Clarissa111 · 17/10/2022 20:41

We visit often as family there. I agree. But the Indian takeaways are bad!

Lidl triple cooked chunky chips are as good as M&S.

Lies!!!! Scottish Indian takeaways are also the best in the world. 😁

Kanaloa · 17/10/2022 20:44

Oh my goodness yes. I feel like if I ever get to go to China I’ll be disappointed that Chinese food doesn’t live up to Scottish Chinese food!

It always looks really dark/dirty in Scotland compared to anywhere else. It’s all that unhealthiness just bubbling away deliciously in the chow mein.

Poshjock · 17/10/2022 20:46

A but the most important question... Is it a west coast Chinese or an east coast? My DH swears the best Chinese takeaways are all in the Strathclyde area.

West coast Chinese! Prestwick!

The best Chinese I've ever had is from a takeaway a 50 minute drive from my mums house in W Yorkshire. It's 4 hours away from me and she buys me extras and freezes them for me to take home with me when I visit Blush

If it’s any consolation, I visited a restaurant in HongKong (allegedly) famed for its truly exquisite authentic home cooked taste.

Alas. To me, it was not a patch on the westernised spicy splodge served in a Scottish small town.

obviously, that says far more, about my damaged palate than the abilities of a team of highly trained chefs cooking cuisine they excel in.

LeviOsaNotLeviosAR · 17/10/2022 20:55

Yes! I'm in North Lanarkshire. No where comes close to the Chinese places here. One in particular is the best for absolute miles.

I would guess they are extra generous with MSG and salt 🤤😂

alexdgr8 · 17/10/2022 20:55

i thought this was about chinese/scottish people.
if talking of food please state meal, cuisine, food or takeaway.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 17/10/2022 20:56

My dd lives in Inverness, I went to visit, we ordered chinese, I ordered chow mein. THEY PUT GRAVY IN IT!!! What the absolute fuck Scotland?

😂

This would be me. Tucking into delicious and authentic Chinese food and I’d still be thinking ‘where are my dark brown thin noodles with random chunks of onion?’

My DP is from NI and we always order Indian there as it is nicer than down in ROI which is where we get chinese. Definitely the chinese down here is nicer.

Will be in Scotland this month and now going to try their chinese.

To a poster above about haggis, it is the best thing ever. Even better than white pudding in Ireland. Love some haggis tatties and neeps.

Feckin starvin now lads.
