There is no Chinese takeaway like a Scottish Chinese takeaway

I am visiting my in laws in Scotland and ordered a Chinese takeaway tonight (we do this every time on our visits).

Now I have travelled the world, lived in New York, Hong Kong and London and now settled in Surrey. And I have NEVER came across a Chinese meal that tastes as good as it does in Scotland.

What are they putting in the stuff? Surely I'm not being unreasonable?

Is it Scotland where the takeaways do a Munchy Box? I've seen pictures of Chinese ones with all the salt and chilli bits/chow mein/curry sauce and they look AMAZING. Never found one near me in the Midlands.

Thatboymum · 17/10/2022 23:42

Op if you are in prestwick you need to try Mr Xie munchy box you won’t regret it 😋

I can get those here, they're lush.

We were a bit surprised to be told we ought to go to the Indian restaurant on Barra, but the recommendation was correct. Exquisite local scallop pakora... maybe not typical 'Scottish Chinese'.Grin

There was a news report on this a few years back. A lot of tourists stopped in Glasgow (I think). The main attraction was the Indian and Chinese food.

cinders222 · 18/10/2022 00:15

Nippy tung in Motherwell is nice. But the Yu Lee in Airdrie is amazing. Also Bon Apetit in Coatbridge is really good (restaurant and takeaway.)

Both do the Munchy boxes someone mentioned. Only thing with both is if getting a delivery you wait ages. So need to order early at weekend.

The Chinese food in Singapore is pretty darn amazing 🤩

Food in singapore and Hong Kong is amazing but different to a Scottish Chinese where you can feel your self gaining 7lbs just by looking at it

i thought this was about chinese/scottish people.
if talking of food please state meal, cuisine, food or takeaway.

As did I - "There is no Chinese like a Scottish Chinese". What makes a Scottish person of Chinese descent particularly unique from other Chinese people? I was fascinated to find out. Do they speak Mandarin with a Scottish accent?

But no. This was about Chinese food Smile

I’m Scottish and have always been disappointed by Chinese takeaways in England but I thought that was bad luck rather than the fact we generally do them better 😆

I think this thread needs a massive disclaimer explaining that some Chinese takeaways in Scotland bulk out their dishes with spam which is disgusting. There are various places do this in the east end and southside of Glasgow.

Indian takeaway is hit or miss. There are some excellent Indians in the cities, but the one in my home town is not good. I grew up loving it like everyone else who lives there, but after living away for 15 years and eating decent curries I realised everything at my childhood local tastes like it has a base of condensed tomato soup.

Fun fact - chicken tikka masala was invented in Glasgow.

I would be surprised at this, spam is surprisingly expensive these days, when I last looked it was £2.99 for a small tin which is more expesive than real ham or chicken.

I remember a previous thread on take aways where English people said that Chinese was the most expensive and paid tonnes more than us. Here a main dish costs around £7 with rice or chips included.

I would say most Chinese are pretty average but some are amazing. My favourite is deep fried crispy beef in chilli sauce with chips and prawn toast on the side.

Don't forget the munchy box which is pure filth!

Oh I’ve heard about this place! They were closed for whatever reason when we were in Barra so never got to give it a go, but it has a good reputation!

What amazes me about Scottish Indian and Chinese takeaways is the portion sizes! You could feed a village with the amount they give you!

Yes! I'm in North Lanarkshire. No where comes close to the Chinese places here. One in particular is the best for absolute miles.

I would guess they are extra generous with MSG and salt 🤤😂

I need to know which one?! I’ve recently moved South Lanarkshire to North and I can’t find a good one nearby.

jmx3 · 18/10/2022 01:26

Also, Indian chicken chasni is a Scottish thing too I think? Delicious.

My friend lives in the Netherlands. When he comes home for a few days, the first night he always has a Chinese. He says the Dutch Chinese meals are not a patch on ours. We're in England by the way.

But Dutch 'Chinese' takeaways do excellent Indonesian food Grin (influenced by Chinese Indonesians). Tell him to order babi pangang, tjap tjoy and nasi goreng, or a rijsttafel. Delicious.

hariseldonscalculator · 18/10/2022 01:47

NI has the best Chinese and eating out in general. I’m always complaining about the food quality in restaurants in the SE to poor DH. I’m now craving a half and half with curry sauce, chips, peas and onions - I do know this is not authentic…..

soupmaker · 18/10/2022 03:15

Honestly, the only thing I'll order in Scottish Chinese takeaway is Singapore noodles or anything that's been salt and chillied! Everything else tends to be covered in glooo. We have an amazing Vietnamese place which does takeaway not far from us, its outstanding.

On a separate note, Scottish pakora is the best though. Went to live in London and was so disappointed not to be able to get mushroom pakora anywhere. Food of the gods.

ApplesForMe · 18/10/2022 06:23

There’s a Chinese in Somerset called Ziangs, and during lockdown they started doing YouTube videos of how they make their food. Very entertaining and so many secrets learned!

I only had Chinese a few times in the couple of years that we lived in Scotland but it was brilliant. We did have loads of Indian takeaways though, the red spicy onions were weird the first couple of times but we soon grew to love them. I wish they did pakora in England the way they do in Scotland, it more than makes up for the way every curry is a luminous shade of red! 🤣

Wait... spiced onions are a Scottish Indian thing? I never knew this! You guys in England are missing out if so! I find it weird too when I ordered an Indian while staying with my friend In England and the pilau rice wasn't yellow.

Also @Agapornis agree about the Dutch/Indonesian food. We've been introduced to Indonesian food through our Dutch friend, they love it as its very popular there.

OneBiscuitAtATime · 17/10/2022 21:13

My only comparison outside of Scotland has been Dublin and I’d say it was on a par, except for the chips. There is something about chinese chips that makes them extra crisp and delicious, probably extra unhealthy.

Also some amazing Indian food in Scotland, especially in Glasgow. And for those not fussed about haggis, it comes in to its own as an ingredient - think haggis pakora and haggis nachos 😚

@OneBiscuitAtATime I had the best chips from a chinese takeaway. I was told they were fried in beef dripping, not veg oil. Dont know if its true

NightmareSlashDelightful · 18/10/2022 07:14

It does seem to be a west coast thing. I live in Edinburgh and we have some decent Chinese takeaways here but the Weegie ones are a cut above, definitely. I like Glasgow for food generally, it’s got a lot going on.

Although I will also represent the eastern part of the country and shout out the Dormy at Gleneagles, who do some of the best Indian food I’ve had. Terrific restaurant, if you’re passing or live in Perthshire.

norrisshutup · 18/10/2022 07:21

For those who asked, we got from the orchid Chinese, Prestwick Main Street.

Yes actually! My friend definitely does!
But she has a mega Glasgow accent anyway so it’s not surprising

No, no spicy onions and although you can get pakora it’s not the same at all AND you don’t get pink pakora sauce!

DH is Scottish. He gets so excited when we order an Indian takeaway when we’re visiting his parents so he can have the pakoras. Often complains you can’t get them in London.

Highschoolprobs · 18/10/2022 08:33

Why no pakora in London!!!! Pakora is my favourite. If you're ever in Glasgow got to Chaakoo Bombay and get the fish pakora.

Nippy Tung on windmillhill Street in Motherwell. We travel to go there. Curry is very spicy and their gravy is a little salty but is brilliant. Best gravy from a Chinese I've ever had.
