There is no Chinese takeaway like a Scottish Chinese takeaway

I am visiting my in laws in Scotland and ordered a Chinese takeaway tonight (we do this every time on our visits).

Now I have travelled the world, lived in New York, Hong Kong and London and now settled in Surrey. And I have NEVER came across a Chinese meal that tastes as good as it does in Scotland.

What are they putting in the stuff? Surely I'm not being unreasonable?

I live in Scotland and agree, they do some great Chinese food. However, different regions vary lol. Some pit peas in everything, random mushrooms in stuff, chopped pork in a chicken friend rice?! It’s made me very untrusting!
I have also been to China and we were initially disappointed that the food was not like the Chinese we knew and loved 🤦🏻‍♀️ we soon got over that and it’s easy to see why Scotland has a much higher population of overweight people than China!

I've never had a Chinese anywhere but Scotland. To me it's the absolute fearlessness in the face of carbs as weaker nations cower.

Fried rice and chips are heaven, absolute heaven together.

@OneBiscuitAtATime I had the best chips from a chinese takeaway. I was told they were fried in beef dripping, not veg oil. Dont know if its true

I agree that Chinese takeaway chips are the best, but I'm not sure they are fried in beef dripping because that's what all the fish and chip shops round here use and it has a very distinctive smell, that I never notice when I can smell a Chinese takeaway. Perhaps they use another animal fat, like lard?

We had an amazing Chinese takeaway nearby just outside Glasgow. We loved and can’t find anything that quite compares but DH saw a comment o line that it had changed recently and wasn’t quite as good. We joke about taking forks and sitting in their carpark to eat. It’s just too far to get it home whilst still warm.

I can't agree about NI Chinese. DPs family are from there, so we visit a couple of times a year. They always get a takeaway at least one night we're there, and if I'm unlucky it's more than one. I do admit that the Chinese is much better than the Indian takeaways, which are genuinely terrible. They have a shit ton of American style diners though, which are good for a hangover.

For those who asked, we got from the orchid Chinese, Prestwick Main Street.

I will try it when we next have a take away. Another amazing local restaurant is Thai @ Home as you head into Ayr.

Defo agree that other Chinese / Indians are disappointing. No pakora or spicy onions in London is shocking lol - went to an Indian on brick lane a few years ago and was so disappointed!!

And salt and chilli everything - amazing!! In the south side of Glasgow there's a few I love - Polmadie Wok, the Orchid in Mount Florida, Tao in Shawlands (haven't been here for ages). Best Indian is the Clay Oven - you'll wait about two hours for it, but you won't be disappointed when it arrives!

Which one?! I’m up there next week!

Try the 88 beside the Railway station in Ayr, best in the area

We love the Ocean View at the harbour.

Nippy tung in Motherwell is nice. But the Yu Lee in Airdrie is amazing. Also Bon Apetit in Coatbridge is really good (restaurant and takeaway.)

Both do the Munchy boxes someone mentioned. Only thing with both is if getting a delivery you wait ages. So need to order early at weekend.

I love round the road from Bon Appetit but haven't ever ordered from there as I never have cash on me and they're not in just eat. Could be less lazy and actually walk round I guess. I spotted Yu Lee online recently so will give them a go!

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 18/10/2022 15:02

Sun do at Airdrie high street for me 😋

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 18/10/2022 15:03

Sorry that’s in relation to the poster who asked about takeaways in North Lararkshire.

Ellnet · 18/10/2022 15:12

We live in the Highlands and regularly travel to the central belt. I’m not ashamed to say we buy extra Chinese takeaway while there to bring home and freeze 😂. You can’t beat a chicken curry, fried rice and chips with curry sauce.

Poshjock · 18/10/2022 17:08

DH is very happy to hear all the praise for the NL Chinese takeaways - I'm East of Scotland and he's been telling me for years they're the best. His personal favorite is Lee Wong in Bellshill. It's a Jock family legend

Yutes · 18/10/2022 19:36

I don’t know if I would freeze to eat another time, but fair play

Maireas · 18/10/2022 19:38

Nobody, but nobody, does an Indian cerry-oot like the Glaswegians.

Maireas · 18/10/2022 19:39

Also - the best fish and chip supper? Leith.

kateandme · 28/10/2022 00:01

And nobody does hotdogs like Norwegian service stations or mountain cafes.

Gingerkittykat · 28/10/2022 18:57

The best fish and chips is definitely Anstruther fish bar. I don't generally like chippies but these chips were on another level.

Luckily I live reasonably close so can go out of season/ quieter times. The queues can be insane.

England definitely has better chip shops than Scotland!

The Wee Chippy is far better than the Fish Bar. There are better chippies in Central Fife these days so not worth the drive out there like we used to back in the day.

I find English chippies are universally awful and it's the one thing I look forward to coming back home for - a decent fish supper!

Gingerkittykat · 28/10/2022 22:21

Where is the Wee Chippy? Is that also in Anstruther?

Poshjock · 01/11/2022 23:40

Sorry, busy weekend only just seen this. Wee Chippy is on the same street but at the other end of the harbour.

PrincessNutella · 01/11/2022 23:53

Eeewwwww, no!! I think Scottish Chinese food is disgusting!!!

Are you anywhere near Dornoch? There’s a really good Chinese take away there.

FurAndFeathers · 02/11/2022 00:57

The Taj in Biggar does excellent Indian food
