There is no Chinese takeaway like a Scottish Chinese takeaway

I am visiting my in laws in Scotland and ordered a Chinese takeaway tonight (we do this every time on our visits).

Now I have travelled the world, lived in New York, Hong Kong and London and now settled in Surrey. And I have NEVER came across a Chinese meal that tastes as good as it does in Scotland.

What are they putting in the stuff? Surely I'm not being unreasonable?

I'm sure I've never had spam in Chinese and I've been near Glasgow for 25 years.

*Northern Ireland has the best Chinese food!

It does! I want a Chinese now!

The best Chinese I've ever had is from a takeaway a 50 minute drive from my mums house in W Yorkshire. It's 4 hours away from me and she buys me extras and freezes them for me to take home with me when I visit Blush

Please share! The best one I ever had was in West Yorkshire - Otley/Menston area to be precise. I'd laugh if it was the same one

PinkPalaceinthesky · 17/10/2022 21:35

Everything is marinated in Irn Bru.

That's the secret.

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/10/2022 21:36

I’ve never had Spam in a Chinese dish in Scotland but Spam is widely used in dishes across East Asia and the Pacific Islands. I had some amazing Spam nigiri in Seoul!

Coconut212 · 17/10/2022 21:36

Ho’s in Knightswood just outside Glasgow is the best Chinese ever!!!

JeanMarie · 17/10/2022 21:36

Another vote for NI here. 😁 My dp previously lived in Scotland for 25 years and prior to that had travelled extensively for work. He agrees that we have the best Chinese food. I live a few minutes away from our local take away and funds and waist line permitting i 'd be ordering way too often. Indian food is very hit and miss I find, some really good but more often than not a bit of a disappointment.

cinders222 · 17/10/2022 21:39

I am also North Lanarkshire and takeaway beside me is amazing. The salt and chilli chips are the best things I have ever tasted. I go with the theory that we add tons of unhealthy MSG for extra taste

IHateWasps · 17/10/2022 21:41

Ok. All of you North Lanarkshire people need to start naming these amazing takeaways. I'm not in NL but close enough.

clare8allthepies · 17/10/2022 21:42

I only had Chinese a few times in the couple of years that we lived in Scotland but it was brilliant. We did have loads of Indian takeaways though, the red spicy onions were weird the first couple of times but we soon grew to love them. I wish they did pakora in England the way they do in Scotland, it more than makes up for the way every curry is a luminous shade of red! 🤣

West coast Chinese! Prestwick!

I am going to require the name of that restaurant!
Assume you have realised Scottish Indian food is far superior too and booked a table at the Taj?

Sparklybanana · 17/10/2022 21:43

No no no no no. Chinese food in Scotland is not great.
Curry in Scotland is however, the dogs bollocks. Not literally of course. But I haven't had a decent curry in England since moving away. We had a choice of 4 amazing currys where I lived and nothing compares. The closest has been Nepalese takeaway but still not as epic.
You can keep your Chinese. Used to be my favourite but 15 years of Scottish Chinese food has put me off. English ones haven't been much better though. Too much gloop.
I would love to have a korean option.

MajorCarolDanvers · 17/10/2022 21:45

It's the same with a Scottish Indian. Delish.

I love spam, I need to find it in Scottish Chinese food now.

#Clare8 I had chicken pakora earlier, delish.

Spam is very popular in Hawaii.

Janedoe82 · 17/10/2022 22:07

Have lived in Scotland and NI. NI is best for not only Chinese but eating out in general

BarbaraofSeville · 17/10/2022 22:14

When I worked in the Glasgow area, I found the takeaways bonkers and not very nice tbh. I'd much prefer they concentrate on one type of food and do it well rather than lots of different cuisines but make a hash of most of it.

But I make a fab spam and egg fried rice or sometimes substitute the spam for chopped up hot dogs.

slowquickstep · 17/10/2022 22:19

Having lived in many places in the world i can honestly say Scottish Chinese food is very different, tasty but it is stodge.

slowquickstep · 17/10/2022 22:22

I will stick up for the chinese takeaways here in Ayrshire, proper pancake rolls none of the skinny spring roll rubbish

35965a · 17/10/2022 22:22

You’re correct.

North Lanarkshire has the best Chinese takeaways, Glasgow is also good but I wasn't a fan of the Chinese takeaways in Edinburgh at all. It depends where you are in Scotland I think!
No idea about anywhere else in the UK though.

Please share (if not too outing) I'm North Lanarkshire and yet to find a truly amazing Chinese.

I am yet to test it but my friend lives in Scotland now and apparently Indian takeaways also sell pizza. Whatever is going on with Scottish takeaways, I want some of it.

Yeah cause the put the curry on the pizza round these parts.

I've been to China and Scotland. China is better.

But for dirty, wrong food... Scotland.

Call Visit Scotland, that’s the 2023 ad campaign strapline sorted. 😂😂

(I love my Fife lemon chicken that’s not seen even a picture of lemon in its short existence)

Most Indians takeaways where I love (Yorkshire) sell pizzas. I thought this was pretty normal

heyheymamaway · 17/10/2022 22:34

My first undergraduate student job in Edinburgh was at a famously great Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh. I used to LOVE the free meals. I can still taste them now .... delicious.
