There is no Chinese takeaway like a Scottish Chinese takeaway

I am visiting my in laws in Scotland and ordered a Chinese takeaway tonight (we do this every time on our visits).

Now I have travelled the world, lived in New York, Hong Kong and London and now settled in Surrey. And I have NEVER came across a Chinese meal that tastes as good as it does in Scotland.

What are they putting in the stuff? Surely I'm not being unreasonable?

My DH is Scottish and refuses to eat Chinese as we live in England and says they're shite

Stevie6 · 17/10/2022 22:42

@MrsTerryPratchett I don't think you can compare actual food in china to what we call Chinese, DH worked in China and obviously the food was the first thing I asked him about and he said it was remotely similar (he was staying in one of the Hilton hotels so don't know if that made any difference)

My dd lives in Inverness, I went to visit, we ordered chinese, I ordered chow mein. THEY PUT GRAVY IN IT!!! What the absolute fuck Scotland?

I was once shocked at this too but....
It is now in my top 3 orders

Special fried rice 🤤 where I live comes with egg fried rice, Chinese spices, mixed meats, prawns, peas and onions, soy sauce. All mixed together then a fried egg on top then gravy on top of that!

It shouldn't work but it bloody does! I live 6 miles from the Scottish coast on the west coast. Usually get English takeaways but have had a few Scottish ones too

Bunce1 · 17/10/2022 22:47

Lemon chicken- totally luminous and amazing
chow mein with hunks of onion slices and green pepper but only like 3
chicken balls and a very orange sour and sweet sauce. With candied strips of peel in then sauce? That was my post club order.

Pakoras! With ketchup and vinegar. Omg. Amaaaze

Ayrshire lass here sadly moved south and the Chinese is rank.

The 'spam' is just a replacement for tinned pork luncheon meat, which is a staple part of diets all across southeast Asia. It's not unique to Scottish Chinese takeaway at all.

I always savour those little squares of soft pink pork. What ever it is 🤤

Stationsofthecross · 17/10/2022 22:49

The Chinese food in Singapore is pretty darn amazing 🤩

MrsJackRackham · 17/10/2022 22:51

Nippy Tung in Motherwell is excellent but clearly dishes are on the spicy side.
Curry pizza is food of the gods, I like a Karahi pizza. Watch the YouTube video of the guy trying an Egyptian kebab. It really is that good 🙂

Here it's as you describe but with a little omelette on top instead of a fried egg.

I am yet to test it but my friend lives in Scotland now and apparently Indian takeaways also sell pizza. Whatever is going on with Scottish takeaways, I want some of it.

Also burgers 😄 most of our takeaways don’t specialise in one food. The more choice the more customers!

😂

This would be me. Tucking into delicious and authentic Chinese food and I’d still be thinking ‘where are my dark brown thin noodles with random chunks of onion?’

The last time I visited my mum I discovered that they seem to have started putting gravy on prawn fried rice too. 🤮

It was not that way in my childhood. Bloody gravy.

JaneJeffer · 17/10/2022 22:59

Not a fan of Chinese food apart from noodles but love all the food I've had in Scotland (and the booze)

LongLostTeacher · 17/10/2022 22:59

I’m singing the thread title in my head to an S Club song.

There ain’t no Chinese like a Scottish Chinese!

There used to be a place in Glasgow called the Canton Express or 'the Canton' to regulars. It was out of this world, the interior was a bit manky but it was cheap, very fast and tasted bloody amazing (rarely eaten when sober though). Have never found anything quite like it since.

Claireshh · 17/10/2022 23:17

I remember Canton!

goosebuster · 17/10/2022 23:18

Not quite NL but maybe close enough for some, panda in Dedridge is amazing

Meili04 · 17/10/2022 23:21

I had Chinese food in Beijing , Guilin, Yangshou and Shanghai. I thought it tasted vile compared to Chinese food at home 🤣🤣. I wanted to travel to Guangzhou to eat Cantonese food but OH was having none of it.

ijustcouldntthinkofausername · 17/10/2022 23:21

I'm English and never visited Scotland, it's just never really appealed to me until this thread now I feel I need to go to Scotland for the best Chinese I'm ever gonna have 😂😂😂

Agree with this hokkien mee is out of this world and the Indian ! I love mutton curry with roti paratha found nothing like it at home 😩

PurpleNebula84 · 17/10/2022 23:23

We stumbled on a Chinese when staying in Musselburgh close to Edinburgh - it was divine - the lady proprietor was lovely and called Karen - we went a couple of times in years after when we returned and never disappointed - I want to say it was actually called Karen's, but I couldn't swear to it.
But yes, best Chinese I've ever had.

norrisshutup · 17/10/2022 20:48

West coast Chinese! Prestwick!

Which one?! I’m up there next week!

GuyMontag · 17/10/2022 23:29

Thing about West of Scotland in particular is that they've had generations of people migrating there in fair numbers from specific countries and then setting up food places that got adapted fusion style to fit the Scottish palate - which itself tends towards the fried/spicy anyway, so anything with either element matches really well.

autastic · 17/10/2022 23:31

Interesting m! I live int he SE but travel to Scotland frequently and find the Chinese food there horrible, it's really sweet and oily and you are forced to have rice with every dish it seems like. Could just be the bits I have been to but not impressed... that said I went for a buffet type thing once which was very good and the Indian food in Glasgow and surrounding is lush.

DuckEggBlend · 17/10/2022 23:34

Is it Viva Garden in Prestwick? If so, it's epic Grin
