What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

A “round” of bread comes from the way bread was baked before industrial baking where tins were first used. Bread was shaped prior to baking into a mound type pile and then baked. It generally came out “round” or circular.

It’s one slice and I’m sure it was used before toasters were invented.

When I searched the first answer is actually 2 pieces from 1 slice. So 1.

I consider a round to be a “serving.” So that might be three slices for a growing lad, two for me, but only one for DC.

On nights if somebody makes a round of toast they make enough so that everyone in the room has at least 1/2 slices.

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair , loaves were once round and uncut. A round of toast was one slice of bread, toasted. People would have a chunk of bread with stew, soup, cheese etc. Slices came later as bread became more square. The saying stayed. It was certainly around in the 70's when I was a child.

I say to people do you want a round of toast. To me a round is one slice but I always make them 2😅

For those ppl claiming a round is one piece of bread, you’re saying round is a synonym for ‘one slice’. But this is not correct, a round is more than one, eg a round of drinks is always more than one drink.

I've never in my life heard a round of toast mean anything other than 1. Maybe its a regional thing.

A toast rack is a ridiculous invention. Everyone knows that it's a race against time as soon as the toaster has popped. Why on earth would you let it go cold in a rack??

Look again. It actually says. 2 slices equals 1 round.

If I asked DP to put me bread in the toaster I'd say can you put me 2 rounds in please. Meaning 2 pieces of bread. Not 4.

One slice per person: six people having breakfast means six slices in a round.
