What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

A round of toast is one slice, usually cut in half.

Myfavouritemug · 09/10/2022 14:50

Well I would have given you two slices but after looking it up the Longman’s dictionary says 1. Might help DH with the diet 🤣

One piece of bread cut into two

Definitely this 😊

HumourReplacementTherapy · 09/10/2022 14:51

One is a slice
Two is a round
Three is greedy

beastlyslumber · 09/10/2022 14:53

A round means a serving.

So it could be one, two, three or more pieces of toast!

Beefilm · 09/10/2022 14:55

Slice of toast sounds wrong to me. I say a piece of toast.

What is a round of toast? No idea, never thought about it. But I suppose one piece of toast.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 09/10/2022 14:56

Two!

If DH offered me a round of toast and then handed me a slice it'd end in hard stares and questioning our marriage.

LilacPoppy · 09/10/2022 14:56

A round means a portion not a slice! It's two pieces of toast cute in half.

Eightiesgirl · 09/10/2022 15:00

My husband says this every bluddy time I ask him how many slices of bread he wants. It drives me mad as, if I question it, he always replies "one slice" So why can't he say one slice in the first place!

missbipolar · 09/10/2022 15:04

In hospital its 1 piece cut in half

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 09/10/2022 15:07

A round of toast is one. 2 rounds of toast is 2.

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 09/10/2022 15:07

A slice of toast is one slice of bread. A round of toast is two slices.

jetadore · 09/10/2022 15:09

1 round = 2 slices of bread.

Did you never wonder why someone made up a word when slice was already a thing?

Whatever the answer is it would be stupid to think it's 1, that makes no sense.

Your reason to call people stupid is stupid. There are multiple words for lots of things.

My family and Dps family would expect 1 slice of toast.

We don't say rounds of toast we just say toast 😄

Folklore9074 · 09/10/2022 15:20

Two slices… though can see the logic behind thinking it’s one slice cut in two.

AutumnalCosyness · 09/10/2022 15:20

A plate if toast with enough for all those who want some.
Usually accompanied by a fry up for all.

Thighdentitycrisis · 09/10/2022 15:21

It’s one in my house

A round is two slices.

One slice is....a slice.

I don't know how people can misinterpret such things.

hairyfail · 09/10/2022 15:23

A round is how many will fit in a toaster so currently 4 here but has also been 2

Oooh, the YABU/YANBU poll is currently at exactly 50-50. Edge of the seat stuff!

I always used it to mean one slice (cut into however many pieces). But I realised, looking at this thread, that I haven't used the term for ages - a decade or more.

HelloDoggy · 09/10/2022 15:25

I've only ever heard of a round of toast when having breakfast in a BnB. To me, a round of toast is served in a toast rack! One round is maybe two slices cut into 4 triangles!
