What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

A round is 2 slices.

OneTC · 09/10/2022 14:23

1 piece cut into two or four

A slice for each person sitting at the table - like a round of drinks

Yep this - a round of drinks, or we'll have "toast all round".

Catlover77 · 09/10/2022 14:27

One slice of toast

Mamette · 09/10/2022 14:27

The word slice has become unrecognisable to me since starting this thread, weird when that happens.

I think a round of toast is one slice of bread toasted and cut in half. And then a slice of toast is one of those pieces.

So a slice of bread is double the size of a slice of toast which makes no sense but anyway, that’s mo.

SeatonCarew · 09/10/2022 14:28

A slice. It is not the same usage as a round of drinks.

AdoptedBumpkin · 09/10/2022 14:28

I've often wondered this myself, but I'd probably say two.

DesignerRecliner · 09/10/2022 14:29

2 slices.

1 piece = slice of toast
2 pieces = round of toast

Drink plurals are the same, 1 is a 'drink', more than 1 is a 'round'

I think it's 2, because otherwise you'd just say a slice of toast.
but strangely, if someone said a round of sandwiches i'd assume they meant 1 sandwhich.

I agree, toast is 2 slices for a round. A sandwich is 1 sandwich for a round which is 2 slices of toast.

When I was in hospital I ordered (not in the UK) toast and yogurt for breakfast and was very disappointed to receive only one slice of toast 😁

tootiredtoocare · 09/10/2022 14:31

If I'm going to have toast, I have two slices (because, of course), but I would understand a 'round' to be one slice per person.

Topee · 09/10/2022 14:31

Two slices.

Mentalpiece · 09/10/2022 14:32

Its toast made from a milk roll loaf, silly 😊

DramaAlpaca · 09/10/2022 14:33

A round of toast is absolutely, definitely two slices

Hardbackwriter · 09/10/2022 14:34

The OED says that it's one slice, and that I was wrong that it's like a round of drinks, though in modern usage there's some overlap

What is ‘a round of toast’?
Lesserspotteddogfish · 09/10/2022 14:36

I would have assumed a piece each for however many people are there, like a round of drinks.

erikbloodaxe · 09/10/2022 14:38

One slice cut in half is a round. Nothing to do with toasters.

DorritLittle · 09/10/2022 14:40

Two slices = round.

NightNite · 09/10/2022 14:40

What sort of weirdos eat just one slice of toast?

CuriousCatfish · 09/10/2022 14:40

A round of bread would be one slice of bread.

Underneaththearches · 09/10/2022 14:41

Two slices!

Angelofthenortheast · 09/10/2022 14:41

1 slice

The OED says that it's one slice, and that I was wrong that it's like a round of drinks, though in modern usage there's some overlap

Whatever the answer is it would be stupid to think it's 1, that makes no sense

It makes perfect sense, see above @AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair

BlueRibbonPen · 09/10/2022 14:44

One slice of toast.

BeardieWeirdie · 09/10/2022 14:45

2 slices, obviously. One slice isn’t going to touch your sides going down.

InsertPunHere · 09/10/2022 14:48

One slice of bread toasted and cut into halves (or quarters) is a round of toast.
