What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

A round of toast at my local breakfast place is two slices.

SequinsandStilettos · 09/10/2022 17:10

1 slice of toast cut into halves or quarters!

budgiegirl · 09/10/2022 17:11

For those ppl claiming a round is one piece of bread, you’re saying round is a synonym for ‘one slice’. But this is not correct, a round is more than one, eg a round of drinks is always more than one drink

Nope! Not according to the dictionary (or my mum!). They're referring to different things, so you can't compare the two. The origin of the word is different. A round of drinks certainly can refer to more than one drink. But a round of toast (or bread) means a single slice, which originally was cut from a round loaf. It may or may not be cut in half, but either way, it's still one single whole slice of toast.

SugarNspices · 09/10/2022 17:13

1 round of toast (a round of toast) is obviously 1 slice of bread toasted!

1 round of sandwiches is two halves (such as you get in a supermarket sandwich). The fact that it is made from two full slices of bread (if a closed sandwich) is irrelevant, you don't eat the top and bottom separately. So 1 round of sandwiches is 2 distinct things to pick up and eat.

Ergo 1 round of toast is two halves, 2 distinct things to pick up and eat. 1 round of toast = 1 slice of bread toasted.

1 piece of toast is half a slice, unless you are my DH and eat your toast uncut.

Kite22 · 09/10/2022 17:14

1 piece of bread, here

TheRookie · 09/10/2022 17:15

If I was saying 'a round of toast', I'd likely be making toast for a crowd of people rather than just myself? So id likely make 1 slice per person initially but it'd be on a toast rack and everyone would help themselves and then we would make more if needed

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 09/10/2022 17:17

To ME, a 'round of toast' is making toast for whoever is there. More like making a round of tea/coffee or buying a round of drinks.

i don't know anyone who uses a 'round of toast' instead of piece/s or slice/s

BlessedMog · 09/10/2022 17:20

In our neck of the woods the West Midlands, a round of toast is one slice. When I’m offering I usually propose a couple of rounds of toast though i.e. 2. 😊

Nugg · 09/10/2022 17:25

One slice. I've never heard the phrase a round of sandwiches but I've heard round of bread which is one slice!

Mysterian · 09/10/2022 17:25

If you play a round of golf you do the course how many times? One. Therefore a round of toast is One slice.

Upwiththelark76 · 09/10/2022 17:28

A round of toast is definitely 2 slices!

Spanielsarepainless · 09/10/2022 17:35

One slice of bread, toasted both sides. A round of sandwiches is two slices of bread with a filling between.

starfishmummy · 09/10/2022 17:41

A round of sandwiches has 2 slices if bread, so I'd expect a round of toast to be 2 slices.

napody · 09/10/2022 17:45

2 slices. Four slice toasters haven't been around anywhere near as long as the phrase.

shivermetimbers77 · 09/10/2022 17:50

I always feel so disappointed when someone offers me toast and it’s just one slice. It feels so measly and yet I feel awkward asking for more . So from sheer greed, my view is that a round of toast is two slices of bread.

Novum · 09/10/2022 17:52

One slice of toast, cut in two or four.

EllaB22 · 09/10/2022 17:53

2 slices!

Darbs76 · 09/10/2022 17:54

2 slices I’d guess, but no-one has ever asked me for a round of toast before

LakieLady · 09/10/2022 17:56

2 slices, same as a round of sandwiches. It's a sandwich made from 2 slices of bread, cut in to halves or quarters.

Beveren · 09/10/2022 17:57

One slice

Wombatbum · 09/10/2022 17:59

At my local cafe if you ask for a round of toast you get two slices
