What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

I’d say a round is at least 2 slices per person. Nothing to do with the size of your toaster.

I think it's 2, because otherwise you'd just say a slice of toast.
but strangely, if someone said a round of sandwiches i'd assume they meant 1 sandwhich.

I have strong opinions on this! A round of bread is indeed one slice, but a round of toast or sandwiches is two slices of bread. It just is! The numerical value of a 'round' changes according to what it is a round of 😁

I've only ever heard DH and his family say it in RL and they mean a slice. I don't see the point, just say a slice.

A "round of sandwiches" is two slices of bread with filling which can be cut into two or four individual sandwiches. I learnt this in the Girl Guides!
Hence one round = two slices.

I have known people who have eaten two or three rounds of toast in one sitting! Usually young sporty males.

A round is a portion (which in my view is 2 slices).

4 slices would be 2 rounds (2 portions)

Clearly a round is not a standard unit of measurement! Which is why I prefer to say slice, it’s less ambiguous.

A round of toast is one slice of bread, cutted up however you like. If you had a 4 slice toaster would you husband claim 4 slices was a round?
And why have I never heard anyone refer to a 'round of bread and butter'?

Not something I've ever said or given any thought to so I'd use my words and ask the person saying it as it's not an SI defined amount 😀

Surely 'a round' always means one per person there, like a round of drinks? So a round of toast is one slice per person, a round of sandwiches is one sandwich (two slices of bread) per person. So 'a round' could be two slices or twenty, depending on how many people it's feeding.

Whatever the answer is it would be stupid to think it's 1, that makes no sense.
