What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

I would say that a round is what you would use if you're making for more than one person and it's one slice per person. Much like a round of drinks is one per person.

I like the idea of having a 'round of toast' that is like a round of beer. Everyone sitting about convivially, and each person in turn having responsibility for getting up and organising a slice of toast for every member of the group.

I've always assumed it's two slices per person, so if there are 4 of you, it's 8 slices.

Having said that, I've never used the phrase, I always just ask people if they'd like some toast.

Toast for everyone in my mind? So one slice each or 2, same as a round of drinks could be one drink or a drink and a shot. I don't think I'd use the term for just one person.

A round was always one slice of bread in our house growing up. No toasters involved as our toast was done under a gas grill. Yum! I still call a slice a round and so does DP (obviously from a completely separate household!!)

One slice with the cut going from the mid point of one side to the corresponding point on the opposite side in order to form 2 long rectangles. Or if you're all fancy lah-di-dah you can cut diagonally.

It's from when bread wasn't baked in tins meaning a loaf was oval shaped, so a slice of it would be round. So 1 round = 1 slice.

I’ve heard the expression and cannot abide it. It’s just so vague and twee. No idea how many slices it means.

A serving, whatever the individual has on the regular. Like a round of drinks. For some people a round might be half a pint, for others it's a pint.

A round is two a piece of toast is one. A round of sandwiches is also two ie made from two slices of bread.

(Yes, "a round" of toast is one slice cut in half, the important bit being that it's a single slice of bread.)

A round of toast, to me, is a big plate of toast for multiple people. Like when you have a fry up at a cafe and they bring you a pile of toast for everyone.

Does your 'round of sandwiches' mean 1 sandwich = 2 slices of bread?

you can fit 4 slices under a grill, I think it probably was 4, before everyone had toasters and used the grill to make toast

I think it means 'toast is served to everyone present', like a 'round of drinks' is not a set number of drinks.

SO if theres two of you and your toaster does two slices, thats one each, a full round. If there's four of you, you might have half a slice each this round and another half a slice each next round rather than anyone waiting whilst others eat.

I don't know that I have heard anyone refer to a 'round of toast' if its just one person though? (Or if they have i think thats incorrect!)
