To get so pissed off with the sarcastic sods on here

I don’t subscribe to the ‘sarcasm is the lowest form of wit’ view. But on here generally it isn’t funny, it’s either rude, unkind or more usually both.

So someones just started a perfectly harmless thread about a clothes shop and instead of replying ‘oh, did you know they have a petite range, I’ll link you’ we have You do know they have a petite range, right?

Its everywhere. Is it just me who is sick to death of the snark? I mean, sometimes there is help and support and just sometimes a nice chat on here but there’s always someone wanting to be an arse. And WHY don’t MN deal with it?

muttimalzwei · 08/10/2022 18:24

No I'm tired of it too. Being a bit shitty for the sake of it.

Eunoia · 08/10/2022 18:26

The constant passive aggression is so odd. So much pent up anger in some people.

IloveGogglebox · 08/10/2022 18:29

Yes it's very horrible on here with that. If you can't answer or don't know then swipe on by, don't leave a sarcastic comment.

INeverSawAPurpleCow · 08/10/2022 18:31

This kind of thing has got a lot worse recently. I do think there's a concerted effort by a large and organised group of people to change the mood and tone on Mumsnet. I know this makes me sound like a complete conspiracy theory. Of course, ordinary Mumsnetters chip in too.

INeverSawAPurpleCow · 08/10/2022 18:31

*theorist

Evira · 08/10/2022 18:33

I agree. Always someone looking to belittle someone else, always looking to pick.
Bullying behaviour.

Servalan · 08/10/2022 18:33

I would be very surprised if some of the snarky things posted on here would be said out loud to anyone in real life as they would get called out as a bit of an arsehole.

Chikapu · 08/10/2022 18:36

And WHY don’t MN deal with it?

Genuine question, how would they deal with it?

Watchkeys · 08/10/2022 18:39

And WHY don’t MN deal with it

How? They can't micro-police everybody, and people here are adults. We can mostly handle passive aggression, which is, although unpleasant, part of many conversations.

OldTinHat · 08/10/2022 18:39

Some people just aren't very kind ☹️

pictish · 08/10/2022 18:40

Why would MN deal with it? They’re not responsible for posters’ personalities. Unless a post is personal or abusive it will be left to stand.

Darbs76 · 08/10/2022 18:40

There’s a lot of rude people on this forum full stop

Blossomandbee · 08/10/2022 18:42

Yes I agree, and it seems that one person starts it then a load of others pile on.
I used to like the dry humour and wit on here but there's a lot of plain nastiness now.

IglesiasPiggl · 08/10/2022 18:43

I find it so unnecessary when someone starts a thread about something and somebody comes on with "what did the doctor say when you asked them?", or "what did the neighbour say when you spoke to them?. It's obvious the OP hasn't done that as they're asking for advice before taking action. Such a wanky response, it really gets my goat.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 08/10/2022 18:44

Some of the bloody stupid things people come out with though, produses some of the funniest sarcastic responses. I’d hate if all the “Is that you, Sharon?” was miderated away. Just don’t take it seriously or as a personal attack.
The only things I can’t abide are posters who expect everyone to agree with them and are quite aggressive about it, trolls and trollhunters.

Herecomethesheep · 08/10/2022 18:44

I think that’s the problem @pictish , it’s that grey space between not quite being a personal attack but also being needlessly shitty. Every so often a post will be taken down for not being in the spirit but that is normally when it’s someone who is clearly a bit vulnerable - ill or just given birth or something - getting the tidal wave of dickheads. If it’s just an ordinary thread they don’t.

Its true that they can’t police peoples personalities, though. But it would sometimes be good to have a ‘look, robust debate is fine but just being an arse isn’t acceptable and we won’t tolerate it’ might work. Or not.

Alongside this is the brigade of snarky people who try to unravel every post when clearly it’s a public forum where people omit things for privacy.

“It’s just not adding up OP”.

ginslinger · 08/10/2022 18:45

I agree OP - there is a lot of nastiness on here at the moment, it's like a race to the bottom to disagree with the OP. There is also a huge amount of faux 'misunderstanding' -

Hawkins001 · 08/10/2022 18:45

It's a mix at times

girlmom21 · 08/10/2022 18:46

I think lots of people are rude or sarcastic for the sake of it but sometimes people just type the way they speak and tone gets misconstrued.

I read your example and thought it didn't seem sarcastic but it seems more of an Americanism, but I haven't seen the thread so can't really comment on the proper context.

Herecomethesheep · 08/10/2022 18:46

@PeekabooAtTheZoo but that’s not really what I’m talking about. Humour is fine. But it’s not remotely funny to sarkily say ‘google is that way.’ It’s just being a dickhead.

OP posts:
mrsjimhopper · 08/10/2022 18:46

Yep I've been on the end of snarky sarcastic comments on a benign thread. It's pretty upsetting tbh. I really didn't expect anyone to question my bland opinion on certain shops and create a bunfight.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 08/10/2022 18:46

I can also proofread posts occasionally 🤣😅

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/10/2022 18:46

Nothing new to MN.
