DS got a tattoo - AIBU to be furious?

I'm posting to see if I'm being U to be furious.

My son is 16, he goes through phases of wanting things then losing interest (like most teens probably!), for about a year he'd been going on about wanting an eyebrow piercing, in the end I let him and it was only in for about 6/7 months until he lost interest and took it out.

He’d also been asking for a lip piercing recently, I said no and he's now lost interest in that - the same as a nose piercing. Those are just examples of how quickly he changes his mind.

He's always said he wanted a tattoo, recently he's decided what of and had been asking me, I've said no and he needs to wait until he's 18 which he wasn't happy about. He came back home today with DP and he's had the tattoo, he had given him consent and I'm furious.

DP says I'm overreacting and it's just a tattoo and doesn't seem to understand he's in the wrong.

AIBU?

Didn't read but unless it's something disgustingly offensive YABU.

How can you get a tattoo with a parent's consent under 18? I thought that was illegal and you had to wait until you were 18?

YANBU. Your partner didn't even discuss it with you and how you felt about him getting a tattoo!

You can't give consent for a 16 year old to have a tattoo. Its 18+.

YANBU and your DP is a twat. I thought it was illegal to get a tattoo under 18? If so, I'd be reporting wherever he got it.

YANBU. Nothing you can do about it now. (Sorry...) Just wanna say this though..... (just in case you didn't realise this already!) the more you 'forbid' a teen to do something, the more they'll do it!!!

Its illegal under 18 even with parental consent. I'd be making a complaint about the tattooist.

Yes, I'd complain and maybe you'll get enough compensation for him to pay for its removal when he changes his mind.

I call BS purely because no tattooist will tattoo a 16yr old. It’s illegal and if caught they risk loosing their license. It’s not worth it.

I got my first tattoo at 15. Without parental consent. So did most my friends. If you are paying money, someone, somewhere will do you want. I don't even know if they had a license but they did have a shop.

Well this is either bullshit or your kid has had it done by a dodgy parlour who probably re-uses needles so I'd be getting him a hep blood test asap.

Well it might be illegal but me & a mate went to get her a tattoo when she was just over 16. Didn't ask for ID. But even if they did ask, I know plenty of kids now who have fake ids

I have a costly cover-up of a very bad tattoo I got on my hip when I was 17 and stupid that begs to differ. Although that was a decade ago so perhaps things have changed but IME in every industry there is the odd person willing to break the rules for a fee.

It's his body 🤷🏼‍♀️
I'd be more worried he'd get an infection or disease from whatever shitty tattooist was willing to do it.
DP would be getting a bollocking for 'giving permission' though

Oh I know many people who got tattoos underage but NOT with their parents rocking up saying yeah, they’re 16 but I’ll sign consent forms. That’s the part that makes me call BS

I know several teens who recently got tattoos abroad (friends of my dds, also relatives) all aged 16 and 17, some places don't care.

It depends, in my opinion. How big/ridiculous/offensive/visible is it? If it’s small, discreet, and he won’t regret it bitterly, then yab a little u, but I would be too if it was my 16 year old.

I would be absolutely furious.

Mumsnet is a strange place where apparently all parents should be totally chilled with these things Confused

I got one when I was 16. I looked young for my age too. Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
