To want pasta bowls

So boring but why oh why do dinner sets come with cereal bowls and not pasta bowls?? Who tf cares if your cereal bowls match?
Any ideas where I can get a decent set with pasta bowls included and not break the bank?
All my dishes are mismatched and I'm tired of pretending it's on purpose when people come over but i cant afford much at the moment.
Am I the only one who would rather pasta bowls br included?

Quite a few years ago I bought two sets of crockery from Costco. Each dinner set came with 4 large plates, 4 small plates, 4 cereal/pudding bowls, 4 pasta bowls, 4 mugs and 1 serving bowl, so 21 pieces in total. They're Royal Doulton Gordon Ramsay Maze, in white.

I had no real idea what I was buying, I just liked them and loved the fact that they came with pasta bowls, and mugs instead of cups and saucers.

We use them daily and they still look as good as new. I'm fairly sure I paid about £50 per set.

So I was going to recommend them. But I just looked them up and they're ridiculously expensive now - £176 for the same set, minus the serving bowl 😖

And now I know how much it would cost to replace, I have a horrid feeling I'm going to break something!

The pasta bowls have probably got the most use. I eat most things out of them, including sandwiches. DP looks askance but I ignore him.

I've also got a couple of enamel pasta bowls, bought on holiday in Belgium. I use those a lot too (even though DP insists on calling them my leper bowls!)

We have habitat ones which are used every day for most meals and are virtually indestructible

JoelyJoe · 05/10/2022 20:23

Love pasta bowls!
All my "everyday" crockery is basic white - so it looks like it matches, even if it's not all from the same set. I got six huge, white pasta bowls from a charity shop.

Habitat

RhiWrites · 05/10/2022 20:49

When you buy crockery from John Lewis there’s a set all matching and you buy the elements you want. So you can have big plates, small plates, small bowls, big bowls, mugs, tea cups, serving bowls, jugs etc and just buy the elements you want.

TiaraBoo · 05/10/2022 20:56

Mine are from Denby, Sainsburys and M&S.

They are pretty much perfect for most meals!

MumUndone · 05/10/2022 21:49

Wow, I never knew they were called pasta bowls, we call them 'plowls', a cross between a plate and a bowl.

AmuckAmuckAmuck · 05/10/2022 23:05

Just a small heads up if any of you do go a bit mad at Denby with club card, be a bit wary of the cutlery.
I bought a set two years ago that was pitted and showed rust marks within weeks, despite being dishwasher safe and hand dried when the cycle finished. They sent me a second set and whilst that’s fared a bit better it’s still not the pristine cutlery I’d imagine for £150 (not that I paid that much but that’s by the by)

For the bowls etc the outlet at Cheshire Oaks is always worth a visit.

Yes if you smash a bowl you can usually get a reasonably priced replacement at a seconds/ outlet store. TKMaxx sometimes too.
Bit worried now as I used my.last lot of vouchers for champagne flutes, hope they are better quality.
I have Arthur Price cutlery and can recommend.

PeloFondo · 05/10/2022 23:12

I have some from TK maxx and these from Wilko which now belong to the cat (he is toothless so needs a wide bowl to contain him trying to eat!!) if anyone wants a cheap option
I've had them a fair while and no chips and lasting well

You can get them for free from Denby if you have Tesco vouchers.

I refuse to buy more, I don’t even entertain people usually but just wanted a nice set for Christmas. I even chose satin to minimise water marks Pft.

Have to say I’m not sure Denby quality is now what it was 20 years ago, but that’s true for a lot of places.
I do like white wear though. Everything matches.

Wow, that's really good. Thank you.

Tesco do matching pasta bowls in all their china ranges.

They seem to change the ranges quite regularly too, so there are often discounts on end of line stuff. Got 6x Fox & Ivy discontinued dinner plates and pasta bowls very cheaply about a year ago. They look far more expensive than their original price.

Canthave2manycats · 06/10/2022 01:12

I'm very happy, because on the back of this thread, I spent my £100 Tesco clubcard vouchers on £300+ of Denby tableware, for the princely sum of £13.75! Well pleased - thank you peeps!!

We love our pasta bowls, we eat everything out of them, even Sunday dinner. We never use plates.

Kapalika · 06/10/2022 08:01

Pasta bowls are great! We've got the Aura Tesco ones.

Plinkingon · 06/10/2022 09:41

We originally wanted Denby but finally settled on a set from ProCook as it was a lot cheaper but still a lovely set. If you get them in store they often have more offers on and sometimes they will let you swap things out of the set.

Womencanlift · 06/10/2022 09:58

Earlier in the year the TK Maxx branches near me had a Spanish stoneware collection in. I do admit having to go to about 3 different stores but did manage to get full sets of plates, pasta bowls and mugs (which are huge!). They are half off white and half blue and look like I could have bought them in Barcelona

They look different to plain white which I also have (mix of Ikea and John Lewis) and are nice to bring out when I have people out

Homesense tend to have a slightly bigger range of crockery and glassware than TKMaxx if you're looking for something specific.

Unfortunately I don’t have one near me but I did stay with a friend once who took me to her local Homesense and I had to restrain myself as was getting the train back home and couldn’t carry everything I wanted to buy 😀
