To think cottage pie is a complete meal in itself?

Why do I need to add extra veggies in the side to what is (possibly?) already a complete meal?

Protein, veggies and carbs all there.

OP posts:
Queuesarasarah · 02/10/2022 21:05

I wouldn’t say it peas in cottage pie (just carrots/onions) so I have them on the side

goodnighthunny · 02/10/2022 21:06

OP, you're probably not wrong, technically (and I probably cba to cook anything else in practice), but I like the idea of something green too.

Tsort · 02/10/2022 21:07

You could, I suppose, but I’m not sure why you would. Vegetables are delicious and they’re good for you, so I don’t get why you wouldn’t have as many as possible.

oviraptor21 · 02/10/2022 21:08

Once you've put the veg in the pie they tend to loose their flavour. So I'd always have a veg dish or two to serve alongside the cottage pie.

blackheartsgirl · 02/10/2022 21:08

I have baked beans with mine. It’s bloody lovely

Underthehills · 02/10/2022 21:08

OrianaBanana · 02/10/2022 19:39

You have pickles with it, of course

@OrianaBanana beetroot and Branston! Plus green veg on the side.

Darbs76 · 02/10/2022 21:08

We have peas and sweetcorn with it

I bring you Rachel Green's thanksgiving trifle recipe:

The ingredients to make Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle are:
• Lady Fingers
• Homemade Custard
Red Jam
• Fresh Raspberries
• Ground Beef
• Peas
• Onions
• Banana Slices
• Whipped Cream

I just don't even know where to start with that.

Why?

CandyLeBonBon · 02/10/2022 21:12

@Brokendaughter you haven't seen that 'friends' episode?

Cottage pie is the devil’s food 🤮. At least if there’s peas on the plate there’s something (relatively) enjoyable there.

I don't like it either🙈

Grigorisangel · 02/10/2022 21:14

I make cottage pie rather than shepherds, peas and carrots in the pie then a couple of extra veg on the side. My usual go to’s would be cabbage and broccoli. I sometimes make a Yorkshire pudding to go with it and always extra gravy

speakout · 02/10/2022 21:14

Not a complete meal for me - no.
Even if the meat has peas, carrots, whatever I like a big pile of greens with it- kale, spring greens, broccoli or green beans

WombatChocolate · 02/10/2022 21:15

Sometimes I serve with vegetables o the side (peas or broccoli) but if I’m rushed and bunging the leftovers in the oven, Inoften don’t bother. The pie itself has leeks, carrots, mushrooms and peppers in it already and not just the mince. Other people add lentils to it. It certainly could be a one dish meal.

mrsbyers · 02/10/2022 21:16

No peas or carrots in the pie , peas on the side with pickled beetroot and grated cheddar

CasperGutman · 02/10/2022 21:16

I voted YANBU because it's your meal and you can eat it how you want. I'd personally always serve it with a been vegetable though. Maybe peas, green beans, broccoli or cabbage. And extra gravy of course.

If you have guests coming then I would definitely add an extra green vegetable as it'll make the plate of food look much more complete and considered.

Lillipops · 02/10/2022 21:16

We do not put veg in cottage pie but we do serve it with baked beans...taste sensation Wink

BlueDiamondGlow · 02/10/2022 21:16

You also need some slices of bread to mop up the sauce.

BeetFeet · 02/10/2022 21:18

HP on the side is all it needs.

HellsBellsK · 02/10/2022 21:19

Just had it for dinner tonight. Growing up always a meal in itself. Peas, carrots and onions are always in it. I have never had one without peas homemade or in someone else house.
However lately I have added baked beans to the side and it is a game changer - I love it!

SoftSheen · 02/10/2022 21:20

Violettaa · 02/10/2022 19:31

I do it with cheesy leeks on the top, but would always do peas alongside.

That sounds amazing

MrsRinaDecker · 02/10/2022 21:22

The only veg my mum put in one was onions and mushrooms, I’ll often add some diced carrots as well, but I’d usually serve it with baked beans or peas or broccoli as well. If I remember from childhood, the usual side was tinned petit pois and baby carrots (tinned peas went with certain dinners, frozen with others 😂 steak and chips meant frozen peas, but chicken Kiev meant tinned!)

Sallyingon · 02/10/2022 21:24

Mine has peas in it so yes a full dish but for perfection I like pickled red cabbage on the side.

daisychain01 · 02/10/2022 21:26

Salad and gravy.

That every kind of wrong.

you just couldn't make it up Grin Grin Grin

SteakExpectations · 02/10/2022 21:27

Perfect cottage pie is mince with onions, mushrooms and carrots; mashed potatoes and swede; loads of grated cheese served with black kale with butter and black pepper.

When making the mince mixture, it’s 1kg mince to 500g carrots, a punnet of mushrooms and 3 large onions.

custardbear · 02/10/2022 21:27

My cottage and shepherds pie only have onion, they're very meaty so I always cook extra veg
