To think cottage pie is a complete meal in itself?

Why do I need to add extra veggies in the side to what is (possibly?) already a complete meal?

Protein, veggies and carbs all there.

I would need at least 3 different veg with that....maybe cabbage, parsnips, carrots, swede, turnips. Otherwise its just carbs and protein

pimlicoanna · 03/10/2022 07:40

I think it needs green veg on the side

This thread is gold. Everything I like about Mumsnet in one place.

  • Dozens of identical replies to an early question
  • Fanatical adherence to personal preferences and insistence that everyone else is wrong
  • Occasional weird suggestions (cottage pie made with pork mince?) leading to genius replies (Sty Pie Grin )
  • Competitive undereaters pointing out that cottage pie has lots of calories so we shouldn't eat more than a teaspoonful of it
  • Competitive overeaters pointing out that you can easily make it even more calorific by eating it with chips, garlic bread, Yorkshire puddings, baked beans and bread
  • Competitive health nuts vying to see how many extra veg they can cram on the plate and not so subtly signalling that the rest of us are doomed if we don't follow suit
  • Competitive weirdoes adding sweetcorn, or eating cottage pie with salad Shock
  • Competitive economisers making the meat stretch with oats, lentils, floor sweepings, you name it and making one cottage pie last a month for a family of 12

Have I missed anything?

I don't know but apparently I missed the memo that it was a competition.

x2boys · 03/10/2022 08:16

I put mixed frozen veg in my cottage pie.

There was once a thread about wether people boiled or dry fried the mince it went on for pages and people got very aerated.

BoxOfCats · 03/10/2022 08:24

Cottage pie is basically just protein and carbs. I would want a couple of serves of non starchy veg on the side to make it a balanced meal.

I can imagine! Only on MN have I heard of people draining the fat/liquid off mince. Bang goes the flavour!

Bayleaf25 · 03/10/2022 08:26

Always extra veg on the side, usually broccoli or green beans but sometimes extra carrots. I do have peas and carrots in the pie but not in large quantities.

Guilty as charged but then I add gravy to the mince onions and mixed veg and top it with ,whispers frozen mash 😱

gogohmm · 03/10/2022 15:33

I like something green with it, runner beans go the best

Doesn’t cheese make it a shepherds pie?

No lamb makes it a shepherd's pie

M..some people actually rinse their mince 🤢

Like they cook it, drained it and rinse it in water and return it to the pan ... madness!
