To think cottage pie is a complete meal in itself?

Why do I need to add extra veggies in the side to what is (possibly?) already a complete meal?

Protein, veggies and carbs all there.

All your favourite vegetables are necessary, to make cottage pie edible.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 02/10/2022 19:35

Only ever carrot and onion in it for me so I'd say something green on the side. I hate peas though....

I'd possibly stretch to allowing mushrooms and /or lentils in the pie itself but not everyone in the house likes them. Definitely no peas or sweetcorn.

RumJerrySailorRum · 02/10/2022 19:35

Cheese makes it Cumberland pie!!

And peas should always be served alongside a meal, never in one.

Violettaa · 02/10/2022 19:31

I do it with cheesy leeks on the top, but would always do peas alongside.

omg sounds amazing. My children would hate it though

MoltenLasagne · 02/10/2022 19:35

Carrots in, peas on the side. But I also have a side salad with lasagne which you could also argue is a whole meal.

Cottage pie and chips
With cheese baked on top of the cottage pie.

Double carbs you gasp in horror .

Doesn’t cheese make it a shepherds pie?

That would be a baaaa..d assumption.

Eranzer · 02/10/2022 19:38

I put Yorkshire puds and peas with it, chips is a good shout too. Always cheese on top.
I mean, it is a meal on it's own though.

Whyishedoingthat · 02/10/2022 19:38

We had this discussion the other night. I made a shepherds pie with left over lamb. It had onion, celery and carrots all diced small in it, some tomato purée, plenty of peas, and swede as the mash on top. I’ve got a stinking cold, and I really couldn’t be arsed to do a side veg too. It was fine by itself, so I agree with you op.

Nadal · 02/10/2022 19:38

Sometimes runner beans

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/10/2022 19:39

I would like vegetables on the side. I like to have half a plate of veg.

OrianaBanana · 02/10/2022 19:39

You have pickles with it, of course

We are twins, side salad for lasagne and also pizza.

Beef = cottage pie
Lamb = shepherds pie
Beef with cheese on top = Cumberland pie

Broccoli, cabbage, kale or beans here. Basically anything green

NightNite · 02/10/2022 19:41

If you used minced pork, what would it be called?

Tiredforfive45 · 02/10/2022 19:42

Cottage pie is the devil’s food 🤮. At least if there’s peas on the plate there’s something (relatively) enjoyable there.

yorkshirepudgf · 02/10/2022 19:42

I always add peas and carrots to cottage pie, topped with cheese and a side of pickled red cabbage!

gobbynorthernbird · 02/10/2022 19:42

A tragedy.

Greensleeves · 02/10/2022 19:43

Ugh, I hate it when people put vegetables IN cottage pie. It shouldn't have any veg in it apart from onions. Served with veg on the side and a jug of extra gravy.

Swineherd's pie?

SocksAndTheCity · 02/10/2022 19:43

Cottage pie without peas? 😱

TheHateIsNotGood · 02/10/2022 19:43

Depends on how many people you are feeding, how hungry people are and how arsed the cook can be really.

My preference is with a side of veg but I'll eat just the Cottage Pie if I'm too hungry to be arsed to cook any veg and no one else to feed.

Scoundrella · 02/10/2022 19:44

We always put onions, peas and carrots inside then do Savoy cabbage and green beans on the side. Maybe broad beans
