To think cottage pie is a complete meal in itself?

Why do I need to add extra veggies in the side to what is (possibly?) already a complete meal?

Protein, veggies and carbs all there.

I like some green veg with it. Absolutely have to have picked red cabbage in the side too.

Thighdentitycrisis · 02/10/2022 20:06

You should try to eat leafy greens with every meal. I would serve greens, broccoli, kale, cavalo Nero etc on the side

Phos · 02/10/2022 20:06

I put carrots, celery and peas in it but usually serve with some green beans or broccoli.

Orangecrate · 02/10/2022 20:07

Cottage pie with cheese on top and beans on side. You’re all heathens adding more veg.

L0bstersLass · 02/10/2022 20:07

I serve it with braised red cabbage.

Chicheguevara · 02/10/2022 20:07

When I was a student, I would put a layer of mixed veggies at the bottom of individual little shepherds pies.
It scandalised my Nan. I can only imagine what my DP would say if I did it now though. Shepherds pie with greens or mixed veg on the side. The potato bit doesn’t count as proper veg.

Notplayingball · 02/10/2022 20:08

Fine on its own.

SuperCamp · 02/10/2022 20:08

I do not like veg in with the cottage (or shepherd's) pie.
They have no business being there.

Nice bright green veg on the side, preferably broccoli or green beans, another veg - carrots or cauli or something, and pickled red cabbage.

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/10/2022 20:09

We used to get it with peas when I was a kid. But then we also got curry with apples and sultanas in it.

LimpBiskit · 02/10/2022 20:10

Totally a meal in it's own right.

CandyLeBonBon · 02/10/2022 20:10

I bring you Rachel Green's thanksgiving trifle recipe:

prepares for Mumsnet lynching

Carrots, celery, onions and sometimes mushrooms/chickpeas in it. With a tomato sauce instead of gravy. Topped with sweet potato mash and strong cheddar. Sometimes I even use turkey mince.

No peas or beans in this house

Me too, apples and sultanas in curry. What was that about?

Floydthebarber · 02/10/2022 20:11

In our last one, we had onion, celery, carrot and mushrooms in it. Peas on the side, broccoli would have been nice too. Dh made it and would happily put peas in it but knows I think they look a bit sad in there.

I think it would be fantastic with a side of baked beans but no one else seems to agree with me!

Sockmonkeysloth · 02/10/2022 20:11

Peas, carrots and spinach in mine. At least half veg half mince. Defrost in the morning and air fryer in the evening. Complete meal with no effort.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 02/10/2022 20:11

Peas and carrots on the side.
White bread and butter to mop up the gravy.

CandyLeBonBon · 02/10/2022 20:12

Baked fucking beans? Chick peas? What's the matter with you people??! ShockConfused

mondaytosunday · 02/10/2022 20:13

It needs more veg!
People don't eat enough in the main, so adding veg to any dish is a good thing.

Mistymountain · 02/10/2022 20:13

If you serve it with extra vegetables, then you can have a smaller portion of pie, therefore eating less calories, so reducing the chance of weight gain.

Craftybodger · 02/10/2022 20:14

Cottage pie - minced roast beef mixed with carrots and gravy, layer of peas and then topped with mash. Top of mash roughed up with a fork (for crispy bits when baked), served with broccoli and loads of extra gravy.

Doesn’t cheese make it a shepherds pie?

No - minced lamb makes it a shepherd's pie.

Shodan · 02/10/2022 20:15

No veg in my cottage pie, but definitely on the side. Gotta have a contrast of colour and texture. Although I like the sound of pickled red cabbage- might try that next time.

Re the curry with apples and sultanas- I wonder if that recipe was in some 70s magazine or cookbook. My mother used to make it too-sometimes with mince and very old curry powder. Was discustin.

superplumb · 02/10/2022 20:16

I chuck peas and carrots in but pickled beetroot on the side

sheepandcaravan · 02/10/2022 20:17

Hehe

Lamb shepherd pie

Beef cottage pie

Sheepandcaravan lambing time special (no lamb at lambing time)

Beef mine bolognaise topped with cheesy mash, breadcrumbs until crispy.

Served with red cabbage or beetroot.

Beelezebub · 02/10/2022 20:17

Why would you ruin a perfectly good shepherds pie by putting PEAS inside it.

Apart from such disgusting behaviour, the ratio of veg to meat and mash isn’t right if you’re relying on the veg in the pie to make it a complete meal - it definitely needs something adding. Even worse, if you assume that it’s a complete meal then you can’t have extra gravy, and that’s a travesty by any definition.
