To think cottage pie is a complete meal in itself?

Why do I need to add extra veggies in the side to what is (possibly?) already a complete meal?

Protein, veggies and carbs all there.

Peas are inside it though...

Assuming you put peas and carrots in...?

Peas overcook inside it though. also if you have leftovers everything microwaves fine to reheat apart from the sad washed out looking peas.

Greens on the side kale/ broccoli/peas

If you used minced pork, what would it be called?

Has anyone called the police yet? 😱

WombatChocolate · 02/10/2022 21:33

I wouldn’t cook less in it. Agree it’s a meal you want to reheat the remains of. That works fine with carrots or mushrooms but not peas. So if you really need green veg with cottage pie, a side serving is best. But there are all kinds of great veggies that can go in the pie.

One if the joys of it for me is that it’s a one pot meal quite often. The veg is in there, so no need to use another pan or do anything after it’s in the oven. If it was purely meat, then yes, you’d need extra veg. As it is, sometimes I’ll cook a few less ir broccoli to go on the side, but quite often it won’t as it seems a good balanced meal without them.

ThinWomansBrain · 02/10/2022 21:33

I've just seen an earlier reference to red cabbage - I love braised red cabbage.
Not sure I'd want it with cottage pie, but it's getting to winter, time to make a big pot.

AloysiusBear · 02/10/2022 21:35

Wtf peas in the fucking pie? Ftlog you're a disgrace

Beef mince
Onion
Mushrooms
Finely grated carrot & swede (or parsnip)
Bovril
Worcester sauce
Splash of red wine
Bisto

At least two green veg on the side. Eg beans and broccoli, kale & peas

Thank me later

I make cottage pie i serve it with broccoli on the side and sweet corn for ds

next day baked beans (as it’s a bit dryer)

both are delicious

the cheesy leaks sounds lovely

ANiceCupofTeaandaScone · 02/10/2022 21:39

I usually put a couple of carrots in it and something green beside it. My mum always served it with baked beans and I still do that if I want proper comfort food. I’m veggie now though and it is never quite the same with veggie mince.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/10/2022 21:57

It's a meal where you can make sure everybody has far more veg than they would usually - the side veg adds some freshness to the mix.

Potato
Sweet potato
Parsnips
Peas
Carrots
Onion
Leek
More peas
More carrots
Broccoli
Kale
Swede
Sprouts

They all work. And it's cheaper for half the plate to be veg than a whole plate of meat and mash.

If somebody uses pork, they'd better be adding sage to it.

starfishmummy · 02/10/2022 21:59

DS and I would have vegetables or a side salad. DH wouldn't bother. He might have some bread and butter with his.

TwoMonthsOff · 02/10/2022 22:06

@ANiceCupofTeaandaScone

Here is a video of tom kerridges lentil cottage pie, it’s really lovely. I cheat with the potato though and use the ready made version.

ChocolateSpreadOnToast · 02/10/2022 22:15

I always put peas in a cottage pie! Carrots on the side or sweetcorn.

Never make shepherds pie as I don’t like lamb.

I also put peas in fish pie.

Rosesandstars · 02/10/2022 23:56

Fine not to but as we're really supposed to aim for 7 a day rather than 5 (and as a portion of veg is usually around 80g, so far more than you'd get in one portion of pie) then it's not a bad idea to eat it with extra veg.

KittenKins · 03/10/2022 00:24

I add a tin of baked beans as the bottom layer, although they always mix in. I'm trying to eat more protein. Oh & I have 3/4 potato with just a little Quorn mince. I love potatoes.

I’m sorry, but really doesn’t sound very good.

bridgetreilly · 03/10/2022 00:34

@Bunnynames101, whatever that is (and it sounds very nice), it’s not cottage pie.

QuestionableMouse · 03/10/2022 01:40

Changechangychange · 02/10/2022 19:31

Doesn’t cheese make it a shepherds pie?

No.

Shepherd's pie is lamb mince!

Tis okay, I'm not sharing ;)

To be honest the sauce just mixes in so you don't taste it, you just get the beans, so it's not that different from peas. At least it's additional veg, plus it's using up the disgusting low salt/sugar baked beans I'd brought trying to be healthy. Yuck.

I've seen people add lentils or oats in small quantities, cooked with the mince so they absorb the flavour to bulk out the meat, not that I've tried it.

DPotter · 03/10/2022 02:53

Brussel sprouts with cottage pie! This country is in a worse state than I thought!

Definitely an false assumption about peas being in the cottage pie. Mine are on the side, with extra gravy.

FeralWitch · 03/10/2022 02:57

I can confirm that braised red cabbage works a treat as a side dish with cottage pie. We had it last week. Cracking.

HowVeryBizarre · 03/10/2022 05:43

Depends on how lazy I am being, it doesn’t need veg on the side but I quite like some frozen peas even if there are some in already. I will serve it in a pasta bowl if just the pie.

W0tnow · 03/10/2022 05:53

Complete meal here.

EbbyEbs · 03/10/2022 07:18

Broccoli on the side. It’s the only way

londonrach · 03/10/2022 07:20

Yes but it needs green peas to make it look finished
