To think cottage pie is a complete meal in itself?

Why do I need to add extra veggies in the side to what is (possibly?) already a complete meal?

Protein, veggies and carbs all there.

I don’t tend to add many veggies to the actual pie, so I’ll have more as sides

StiggyZardust · 02/10/2022 19:27

I always serve peas or runner beans. I think it needs something green.

topcat2014 · 02/10/2022 19:27

Surely a few green beans or peas? Unless, horrors, you already put peas in !

Twiglets1 · 02/10/2022 19:27

I just serve it with some peas it makes a perfect meal

onepieceoflollipop · 02/10/2022 19:27

Yes you are technically correct, however I enjoy having some green vegetables such as peas on the side.
wouldn’t have chips or anything like that - although that would be an option in some pubs!

Martinisarebetterdirty · 02/10/2022 19:28

Agree it needs greens, either peas or broccoli

Peas are inside it though...

Assuming you put peas and carrots in...?

Sent too soon. I’ll put maybe carrots/peas/sweetcorn (for the kids) in the cottage pie, then have something like broccoli and cauliflower or a cheesy leek bake if I’m feeling greedy.

toastofthetown · 02/10/2022 19:29

It's not unreasonable to serve cottage pie on its own, but it's also nice to have variety. I always serve something else when I make meals like that. Extra vegetables add a flavour and textural contrast to the cottage pie, and having more types of vegetables is beneficial healthwise.

Changechangychange · 02/10/2022 19:30

Depends on what veggies you include in it - if you just use mince and potatoes, there aren’t really any veggies in it are there? And half a diced carrot in the mince doesn’t really count either.

If you are putting peas in it, you are a monster and frankly don’t deserve a cottage pie.

That would be a false assumption

Cottage pie and chips
With cheese baked on top of the cottage pie.

Double carbs you gasp in horror .

I think it needs something green on the side. Broccoli or (my favourite) sprouts.

Changechangychange · 02/10/2022 19:31

Doesn’t cheese make it a shepherds pie?

Violettaa · 02/10/2022 19:31

I do it with cheesy leeks on the top, but would always do peas alongside.

FeralWitch · 02/10/2022 19:31

It’s just one thing on the plate if you don’t do veg. You’d need a big portion to be full.

A couple of veg sides adds vitamins, fibre, a bit of interest and some low-calorie bulk!

Changechangychange · 02/10/2022 19:32

Was this a stealth attempt at a “peas in cottage pie yes or no” megathread OP? 🤣

Cottage pie is beef

Onions, pease and carrots in it

Sprouts, chips and gravy with it.

Best comfort dinner ever!

Lamb makes it a shepherds pie.

I often serve something green in the side and lots of gravy 😁

Yucca78 · 02/10/2022 19:34

Peas in the pie ffs!

MrsPnut · 02/10/2022 19:34

Carrots in it, peas on the side. Always extra gravy!

YewandOak · 02/10/2022 19:34

Doesn’t cheese make it a shepherds pie?

No. Shepherd's pie is made with lamb Mince. Cottage pie is beef Mince. Cheese in the mash doesn't make any difference.
