To think cottage pie is a complete meal in itself?

Why do I need to add extra veggies in the side to what is (possibly?) already a complete meal?

Protein, veggies and carbs all there.

Personally don't like veg inside it, but even if they're present, there aren't enough carrots, for example, to add up to what I'd serve as vegetable side portions. Probably equivalent of four slices of carrot per person in the pie, whereas I'd want about 20 slices in an individual portion of carrots.

Peas in the pie ffs!

Fairly normal to do it tbh. Just look up cottage pie recipes some will have peas, some won't.

@OrianaBanana What?? No!

I always serve peas or runner beans. I think it needs something green.

Yes! I do this

Scarlettpixie · 02/10/2022 19:46

I would always add greens. Broccoli, kale, green beans or cabbage.

Ugh, I hate it when people put vegetables IN cottage pie. It shouldn't have any veg in it apart from onions. Served with veg on the side and a jug of extra gravy.

Let me just go and look up the Legal Lawful Certified Cottage Pie Recipe to check for peas....

I always do mine with peas and carrots in. It's how I was taught to do it by my mum. I don't cook any veg to have on the side either.

Doesn’t cheese make it a shepherds pie?

Lamb makes it a shepherds pie.
Beef makes it a cottage pie.

The cheese has no bearing on its name.

ReachedTheEndofCake · 02/10/2022 19:48

Monster pie, carrots-peas-onions-courgette and lentils with the mince&gravy/stock, sometimes parsnips or swede in with the mash, whatever needs using - then a few different nights broccoli/tinned toms/baked beans on the side to change things up!
Heathens I know!

Cheese makes it Cumberland pie!!

And peas should always be served alongside a meal, never in one.

Cumberland pie is beef chunks not beef mince though isn't it?

Cottage pie and chips
With cheese baked on top of the cottage pie.

Double carbs you gasp in horror .

Carrots in, never peas.
We always serve it with baked beans, though I have been known to do a green vegetable.

If you used minced pork, what would it be called?

Sty pie?

Lamb would make it a shepherd pie. As in shepherd - sheep.

Zelda93 · 02/10/2022 19:50

Oh dear I've been making it as a whole meal for years by adding all the veg to the pie then I can heat it up all week for tea with no additional cooking 😳

Bravo!

MotherofPearl · 02/10/2022 19:51

Sty pie 🤣

MangyInseam · 02/10/2022 19:51

I think it depends on how many vegetables it has. Most don't really have enough.

I also like to have pickled beets on the side, the acid is a good compliment.

I just looked at every recipe on the first page on a Google search for cottage pie andonly one had peas. Never heard of including peas within the pie before now, just carrots and celery.

Mum2jenny · 02/10/2022 19:53

I’d want leafy greens like broccoli or green beans with it.

My cottage pie consists of minced beef, onions, mushrooms and carrots in gravy with a topping of mashed potato and sweet potato - sometimes I also add in butternut squash to mash
we still have a green veg as a side

Luxurysleuth007 · 02/10/2022 19:54

Literally justeating Cottage pie with veg on the side ✨💫
