To be pissed off that Davina McCall and Sainsbury's think that 50% of "people" go through the Menopause

Standing in bloody long queue at Sainsburys this afternoon (as they only open 1 bloody till even when 6 people have trolleys full - I know that's another thread ...) so not in a great mood. Then over the speaker comes Davina with "Hi, I'm Davina and I want to talk about the Menopause." Ok, I think, being at that age, then "Did you know that 50% of PEOPLE go through the menopause?" WTF!!

How to make a menopausal WOMAN really angry.

AIBU to say that Sainsburys have lost my custom?

That is madness.

FourEyesGood · 26/09/2022 18:57

It’s factually correct, because women make up 50% of people! Stop looking for reasons to be offended.

gatehouseoffleet · 26/09/2022 18:57

Well 50% of people do. 100% of women who reach that age do, of course.

Maybe if you refer to people, men will listen? Because people are people, but women are not people in the eyes of some men (or are inferior).

This doesn't bother me like "pregnant people" does.

ButterYourMuffin · 26/09/2022 18:59

But why not say that it is women that go through the menopause? Is women a dirty word?

OP posts:
Kite22 · 26/09/2022 18:59

YABU.
What is factually incorrect about it ?
I've not heard whatever it is she is saying / advertising, but presumably it is about awareness that it ought to be something that is talked about, as it happens to half the population (who are lucky enough to reach that age).

Why that would offend anyone, I cannot understand.

bizzey · 26/09/2022 18:59

50 % of people or 100% of women .

What should the advert have said ?

BeanCounterBabe · 26/09/2022 18:59

I hate the erasure of the word women as much as the next feminist but this is fine. 50% ish of people are women therefore 50% of people go through the menopause 🤷🏻‍♀️

Absolutely this. Talk about looking for offence 🙄

ButterYourMuffin · 26/09/2022 19:01

But it's the lack of mentioning that it is women that go through the menopause. Would it say 50% of people should get a prostate check?

OP posts:
BattenburgDonkey · 26/09/2022 19:01

It’s not really making women a dirty word, it’s pointing out that 50% of all people go through it. Saying women of a certain age or whatever makes it sound like less people. It’s just a way of wording it. Being really angry about it is totally OTT. YABU

mynamesnotMa · 26/09/2022 19:02

The going "through" bit I would have mildly irritating but not as much as the one cash desk..

crosbystillsandmash · 26/09/2022 19:02

Ffs, the 50% of people is in reference to half of the population being women.

Talk about looking for problems where there aren't any 🙄

Our grandmothers couldn't have imagined a world where there was such openness about the menopause, I'm bloody thankful for Davina!!

ChaosMoon · 26/09/2022 19:02

Yeah, you have to want to be offended by this. Women's health issues are overlooks and ignored because they're women's. Make it a people issue and men listen - and nothing will change until the men start giving a damn.

JaneorEleven · 26/09/2022 19:02

It’s more erasure of the word women. YANBU

This would be just as accurate and also fine, 50% of people are at risk of prostate cancer at some point in their lives 🤷‍♀️

ButterYourMuffin · 26/09/2022 19:03

Fine - it was obviously an overreaction- can I just say in my defence that I am menopausal and equally angry that they can't open more than one bloody till!!

I will try to be less arsey in future 😡😁🤭

You have totally missed the point.

I strongly suggest you pick your battles better.
In a world where there is still so many injustices and inequality you choose this?
I'm staggered!

I think she’s using that phrasing to highlight how many people go through it though. It’s not about erasing the word woman, it’s about highlighting exactly what portion of the population go through it. It would be daft to say “100% of women go through the menopause” because that’s bloody obvious.

peggypoochy · 26/09/2022 19:05

I agree with you op, it's a ridiculous way of expressing it. It's deliberately avoiding the word women.

Yes

ButterYourMuffin · 26/09/2022 19:05

@crosbystillsandmash - it was hardly a battle - more like a rant and I have taken everyone's comments on board.

OP posts:
CalishataFolkart · 26/09/2022 19:05

Once again the feminist assertion that women are not people.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/09/2022 19:06

Oh she was just making the point how important menopause is as a discussion because 50% of humans will go through it.

ButterYourMuffin · 26/09/2022 19:06

@ReeseWitherfork - I get it - but why not just say women will go through the menopause. Is that too hard?
